OK I am about done with this game. It's just too punishing and time-consuming to make progress after level 20. A game like Diablo or Borderlands, you get better equipment based on RNG-based drops or beating increasingly-difficult bosses or some combination of both. There's always this feeling of incremental progress. In this game, I GUESS the progress is incremental, but, god, the increments!
I like to use the handgun as a primary weapon, and there's this very good legendary handgun I see people using. So after god knows how long accomplishing NOTHING grinding toward the legendary armour that you can't progress without, the RNG dropped me what I thought was this handgun. Yay! But no, it's a fucking quest to get the handgun wherein I have to spend 5 hours farming kills on a specific planet, AND THEN have to get 500 kills with a .75 r/d USING A SPECIFIC KIND OF DAMAGE ONLY, AND I HAVE ONLY ONE WEAPON THAT DEALS THIS KIND OF DAMAGE AND IT SUCKS, and THEN apparently beat some insanely difficult level that is not even possible to beat except in a party and the level doesn't offer auto matchmaking. For a casual player that's like 20 hours of grinding which counts toward nothing whatsoever in the game EXCEPT this weapon, and how good could this weapon possibly be and I'm fucking sorry but forget it man later for this.
When I turned it off I started playing Diablo and got three legendaries that impact the gameplay hugely in the first 10 minutes.

That's 500 kills with a .75 r/d in PvP, I should add. That's like a mandatory 10 hours in PvP, so you can progress toward a weapon that is useless in PvP because the auto-rifle is so OP.

yeah thus far i have not been blown away by this aside from the technical accomplishment (i'm a v casual player tho and only at level 7)
esp since i've played a couple hours of BL2 in the last week with a buddy at home and was like oh damn this is fun

You want Destiny to be like Borderlands but the fact is it's much more like WoW (I gather, never having played WoW). A slow-o-o-o-ow grind, which actually feels more like real-life drudgery than true action RPGs do. Action RPGs make me feel like a Skinner rat pursuing endlessly larger cheese morsels, whereas MMORPGs are more like having a paper route or selling magazine subscriptions, inching ever closer to the air rifle you're saving for.
― antexit, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 19:51 (nine years ago) link
the lack of matchmaking alone seems ill-conceived

i feel like i got my money's worth out of it even tho i dropped it as soon as i hit the level cap, however i am notoriously bad with money
― adam, Friday, 16 January 2015 18:12 (nine years ago) link
I put a lot of time into this, but once the expansion pack more or less ended my ability to progress further without spending any more money on the game, there was no reason to continue.
I've never had the opportunity to do a raid (level 26) because I don't want to join a guild and add a shitload of random Destiny fans to my friend list. Until raids have matchmaking built in there's not much else you can do to progress at that level other than playing the same stuff you've played over and over again with a few added gameplay wrinkles.

the problem for me is that the mechanics are sublime, which makes the appalling story, paucity of content and endless grind all the more disappointing
― bizarro gazzara, Friday, 23 January 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link
I wish more games had barely any story and great mechanics. Personal preference I guess.
I mean don't get me wrong this game is a B at best. The content/grind issues are undeniable. But the maps are good, the gameplay is good ... when you start getting exotics/legendaries in the 20s even the grind seems moderately worth it. I love all the weird currencies and materials. I love Xur.
And considering how many games these days are broken on day one, I will take a game that works great but needs more content over a game with lots of content that doesn't work. The early levels have way more stuff in them now than they did on day 1. If they keep adding stuff, they have a pretty solid foundation to build on.
― polyphonic, Friday, 23 January 2015 22:05 (nine years ago) link
i am unexpectedly enjoying the end game stuff despite the story/dialogue/content. at 26 now and considering the dlc. i suppose i'd have to join a clan to get fully hooked in. i can't even buy stuff from xur yet but i like talking to him

From what I understand that's the wrong way to do it, you'll end up working to upgrade gear which will then be superseded by expansion-only equipment, which you'll need to upgrade all over again. So if you're going to play the expansion (which I'm not) then I get the impression it's best to jump on it sooner rather than later.
― JimD, Tuesday, 3 February 2015 10:26 (nine years ago) link
i think that only applies to exotics which i don't have yet (the dlc resets any exotic upgrades to the new upgrade system(?!?)). from the start you're upgrading things that will soon be garbage anyway. also the expansion can't even be touched until you're 24 or higher. i grabbed it last night as i'm nearing 28 ;]

i fully understand the hate and frustration with the game which makes my enjoyment of it all the more unexplainable

I didn't get the dlc but did get the new exotics system. I think it was just part of a recent update.
What system are you playing on, amon? I should probably at least take a stab at the vault of glass sometime but I have refused to do any work on finding a guild for some reason.

ps4. i was going to start another class and keep old stuff to transfer but always ended up discarding everything cuz the inventory gets full quick. i accidentally tried vault of glass w/ a 2 people last night and we got nowhere

all of you are probably wondering, how's that awesome new destiny dlc? well it added several new story missions. cool, new stuff to look at, right?!?!... no they take place in the same areas as the other story missions you've run through thousands of times but, this time you run through them backwards! moral: don't buy this shitty game.
― 😂 (am0n), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 15:32 (eight years ago) link
lol. i am tempted often to get this, as it's been dropping to around $20 for the base game. better off to wait for the inevitable GOTY?
― Nhex, Wednesday, 27 May 2015 16:13 (eight years ago) link
the new modes are at least a departure from before and they've removed some of the grindy gear leveling aspects (no more ascendant mats required to get your gear to max) which i think is a step in the right dir. also been having trouble deciding if the game is any fun lately so it's a mixed bag
― head clowning instructor (art), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 16:45 (eight years ago) link
new modes also don't do matchmaking afaik so the game kinda requires you to have 2+ friends who also play / rely on the lfg websites
― head clowning instructor (art), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 16:46 (eight years ago) link
also first dlc seems now to have been a waste of $20 once the second one was released, not sure you need it for any endgame purpose
― head clowning instructor (art), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 16:50 (eight years ago) link
the base level team of 3 vs hordes mode has matchmaking and was kinda fun but a random "teammate" (read: massive prick) rushed in at the end to get the loot which started a timer making me miss out. bungie giveth, bungie puncheth ur balls
― 😂 (am0n), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 19:44 (eight years ago) link
ugh. maybe i'll stick to single player Borderlands
― Nhex, Wednesday, 27 May 2015 19:46 (eight years ago) link
But also you can't play four-player co-op in this game except for raids, and raids are six player. So you have to have three players or six players. It's sort of maddening.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 27 May 2015 19:48 (eight years ago) link
so the big big update is out in a month - just in time for me to have bought a PS4 and to buy this as a package containing the game and all the expansions for £40. thanks for beta testing this everyone xxxx
― jamiesummerz, Thursday, 20 August 2015 15:48 (eight years ago) link
anyone getting into the taken king? the 2.0 update made some very solid changes (weapon rebalancing, expanded bounty slots and the ability to turn in bounties anywhere, consolidation of upgrade materials, etc.) and the new content in dlc 3 sounds pretty solid from what i've read so far today.
i'm still pretty much hopelessly stuck on this game, but still can't be certain i'd recommend it to a stranger (i've pushed it on friends but that's mostly so i have others to run content with). raids are still tons of fun (imo) and 2.0 revitalized pvp to an extent but until i get a chance to delve deeper i can't say for sure it's worth the scratch.

I kind of loved the demo and do plan to pick this up when I've set aside enough $ for a PS4 (it's finally hit the point where it's worth it for me), but that's going to be December at the absolute earliest. I do kind of worry about community for this kind of multiplayer-based game- didn't it have a really perceptible dropoff in player base for a while?
― You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 16 September 2015 00:40 (eight years ago) link
not to mention... there are going to be more expansion packs, aren't there? hence the lack of "complete edition" moniker on the new SKU.
― Nhex, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 14:16 (eight years ago) link
I just got this for PS4. Anyone starting recently that want to co-op?

same actually! might want to once i get to those big raids... if you're UK based my username is jamiesummerz

Yeah I bought TTK in the end, it's very generous in its "Go new places! Do new things! Have this cool stuff for free!" first hour or two, though the instant obsolescence of ALL year one stuff (including exotics, which are now outclassed by second tier year 2 equipment) definitely stings. I hadn't even finished levelling my gjallerhorn.
I'm up for raiding in theory, feel free to add me (jimodo).
