Rod Stewart in the 1980s poll: Singles (that reached the Top 40)
^ just for contrast
I really do like all the singles from the Out of Order album and I despise his cover of Have I Told You Lately. I think I have to go with Downtown Train, though. A couple years later, when I discovered it was actually a Tom Waits song, Rod seemed a little cooler.

Still miffed that Love Touch got zero votes in the last poll. Of course, I didn't see fit to vote for it either.

for those curious about Trevor Horn going A/C, listen to "Rhythm of My Heart."

"Reason to Believe" is the best song, but that'd be too easy. So "Broken Arrow." Don't know a couple of them.

The only 2 I don't care for are "Motown Song" and "Crazy About Her". Actually think "Reason to Believe" is best thing on here. But voted for "Downbound Train".

Have a sentimental affection for "My Heart Can't Tell You No" but I HAVE to vote for Crazy About Her

specifically the album version where "she's the boss's girl...oh no!" is followed by colicky shrieks, which are buried after a chorus repeat in the single edit

or "video" edit, i should say. never heard the single

Rod did well for most of the eighties but the circumstances of his sudden omnipresence 1988-1993 fascinate me.

I mean, Out of Order with four fairly omnipresent Top 15 hits, two of which still get massive A/C/recurrent play.

my brother had his mother/son dance to "Rhythm of My Heart" at his wedding and I realized I hadn't heard that song in like 30 years.
i can't tell if it was because he liked the song or because mom got him Vagabond Heart for his birthday the year it came out. I still like the song, it feels more 'epic' than his usual fare.
fuck making the Temptations be a back-up singer to a white British guy on a song called "The Motown Song", though.

i didn't even remember "rhythm of my heart" by title but after listening... oh yeah, i remember this. meh.
mostly just wanted to post because you mentioned "the motown song" and the temps singing backup on that abomination are the least of its problems. rod's musical crimes are numerous, but that is a musical 9.11 afaic. i honestly can't believe he was allowed to continue afterwards. even as a child, i was personally offended that not only was the song the way it is, but just the fact that it existed was deeply unsettling. cut to six year old austin looking around disturbed at everyone else sitting calmly while that plays on the car radio at a red light. SOMETHING IS WRONG IF THAT SONG IS PLAYING I'M TELLING YOU GUYS IT'S CURSED. FUCK THAT SONG. lol
