Ladytron - Softcore Jukebox [320kbps]
BRMC - Baby 81 [192kbps]

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
I don't know, how to explain. Everyone can read it in Wikipedia, but my english knowledge would not satisfy you guys...

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power
Well i don't like Cat Power at all... so no fav. picture!

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
Well i'd prefer Sufjan Stevens of course. His music clearly comes with more harmony and the vocal and instrumental parts are better composed together. Another thing i really enjoyed was the funny 5cd Christmas Collection by Sufjan Stevens. Oh dudes my English is to bad, i hope one can at least understand some of my sentences and how they where ment.

5) How many invites do you require?

Would be very glad about an Invite...

Admin, I'm not sure what I enjoyed better: a tentacle suggestively placed inside a young woman's mouth or a burly Chad Kroeger with a microphone placed suggestively by his mouth.

As for Spring Break plans, my parents decided to take me fishing and boating in beautiful Lake Tahoe. :)

2) Rockism is a method for pasty white old unadventurous disinterested pathetic men to raise their crap pop music over everyone else's. These people are also known as the bastard children of Lester Bangs. Anyone concerned with authenticity over the actual music should check their ego and pick up a Justin Timberlake album immediately (don't lie - everyone is already out of the closet about "My Love." It's okay to admit it). As much as the "authentic" rock music has it's place, so does experimentation and collaboration. If you took that aspect out of music you'd have nothing except the Arctic Monkeys, and I think we can all agree that it is time for them to go away. Seriously.

For more information see also Rolling Stone magazine and/or Greil Marcus.

4) Deerhoof is much better than Sufjan. I mean, Sufjan may have Casimir Pulaski Day, but how can you beat the bass groove on Believe E.S.P. You just can't. And Songs for Christmas?? Okay, the sensitive cutesy Christian thing was cool and different at first but once you record a Christmas Album you might as well be Wings. And besides, if Satomi Matsuzaki were a man and Sufjan were a dog... Well I think we'd all know what would happen then. So Deerhoof clearly comes out on top.

2) Rockism, to my understanding, is basically when one's opinion clashes with another's concerning a form of popular music. What I mean by this is one not understanding what exactly it is that makes it appeal to the listeners. One disagreeing with the way that a specific music sounds completely because of a certain element, such as synthesizers or the style of vocals, that is present in the music is another way of looking at it. An example would be myself disliking the majority of the popular music that is played on the radio today for it's lack of talent, and mainly - originality!
What rockism is really about is making good music. Popular artists who used to be highly creative and original are becoming more and more the same not only in sound, but in appearance. It's as if what really made an artist original is being thrown away (or sold..) just to fit in and be able to compete with the gimmick bands that are everywhere today. If we could just get back to the music and what it is that makes music GOOD rather than what their image is, what record label they're signed to, or who's in the band, then perhaps music could go back to being genuinely good.

3) http://panther1.last.fm/proposedimages/original/6/1006427/438848.jpg

4) I would definitely have to say Sufjan Stevens. Mainly because I really haven't heard much Deerhoof. But regardless, Sufjan Stevens is a great artist and one of my favorites. Sufjan Stevens is one of those artists that's just so refreshing because of the fact that there's no other music that is quite like it. Not only is Sufjan Stevens an amazing song writer, but also a great musician. I love the fact that he actually plays a variety of instruments that are heard on his albums. Lastly, I really enjoy the blending of all the different styles in his music. Drawing influence from jazz, folk, and indie, he does an amazing job of creating his own unique sound that is unlike any other.

2) Rockism is a the idea that not all popular rock music is Authentic to it's genre. Some people believe that after the discovery of rock and roll many have veered away from rock's roots. Rockism direct criticism towards any band that uses synthesized instruments. Rockism looks down upon any use of non-authentic sounds used in rock sounds. Most people who believe in Rockism like only the original band set up of a rhythm guitar/vocalist a lead guitarist a bass player and a drummer. They also think that at one time rock was perfected, and that one should stay on their course and not verge from it at all. Rockism thinks that instead of there being many definitions of rock that there is only one true elite sound. Kind of like how the Nazi's believed in an Aryan Race.

1) Bright Eyes- Cassadaga
2) Arcade Fire- Neon Bible
3) Stars- Do you Trust Your Friends

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
Rockism is knowing that Incubus sucks. Rockism is being excited about the new Bjork record. Rockism is buying CDs you have already downloaded because you love having the physical copy. Rockism is not doing your grad school homework done because there are just so damn many good music blogs. Rockism is about going to shows by yourself if you can't get any of your friends to go. Rockism is writing out this paragraph even though I even tons of other stuff to do because I always want to hear new good music. Rockism is being able to tell someone how Sebadoh's 'Bakesale' seriously made 8th grade so much more tolerable. Rockism is not caring about what is being played on the radio or MTV.
3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
I'll take Sufjan. At the end of the day, his music is so much more accessible. If I am feeling a certain way, I put on Sufjan to either make me feel better or make me feel worse. While I really like Deerhoof, especially Runners Four, i just can't emotionally realte to some girl singing about a midnight bicycle thief mystery...or something. Plus, when you listen to Sufjan in the Fall, as the weather is changing, and all those horn start going, and the wind chimes kick in, try to tell me you aren't totally high on life. And Sufjan's use of so many different musical instruments always impresses me. Plus, anyone endeavoring to do 50 albums about all 50 states, in the days of disappearing albums, is admirable. And when I saw Sufjan live, he was a lot better than Deerhoof was.

Dear Admin. You lost my application first time around, which was approved. I was asked to reapply, so I reapplied, but through an incorrect and bad cut and paste of my original submission I was asked to reapply next year as my surfjan eight sentence minimum was lacking the cut and paste.

Next year?

Um, through no fault of my own, my application was first lost, then even though my original eight sentence minimum on surfjan was here on this board I was asked to wait a whole year.

So being a proactive kinda guy and thinking this was a reasonable request, I posted the application for a third time.

The response?

"Nicholas = we said next year.

Your IP now has a permanent ban placed on it.

Thanks Admin, my tears are still falling, my heart is split in two, the trees seem much colder, my face seems much older and the blue sky is the blue day of misery that pervades my life.

Rockism is an ideology originating in the bristish music press from the late 70s. It's a loaded word, partly because it means a bunch of different things in practice. Generally, the rockism's tenet is that the composser is an author who expresses himself not driven by commercial purpose and he usually is the performer also. Rockism oposes the manufactured pop music created by hired producers and performed by pop stars, designed to satisfy the mass market and make profits rather than express authentic sentiments. The use of technology like synthesizers and computer-based production systems isn't respected. Rockist's prefer the using of the basic rock instrumentation of guitars, bass guitars and drums which fits the structures of a rock and roll song.
Kelefa Sanneh writes it in a NY Times article: rockism is "idolizing the authentic old legend (or underground hero) while mocking the latest pop star; lionizing punk while barely tolerating disco; loving the live show and hating the music video."
According to Robert Christgau rockism means putting stock in rock's "capacity to change lives or express truth"—as opposed to the kinds of pop that (a rockist would say) have more of a capacity to express pretty lies. To be a rockist, then and there, was to demand a perception of honesty in pop music, no matter how much artifice that honesty involved.
Some people say that rockism is bad becouse it puts music into limits - some really good music can be called bad only couse it doesn't fit in the rockist's standard for quality music.

3)http://wendylynchphotography.com/CatPower_2.jpg

4)I really find it difficult to give an answer couse i'm not familiar with these artists (i'm mostly into funk, soul, jazz, latin, broken beat etc.) I think that it's also incorrect to say which is better couse all depends on the musical taste. That's why i won't say which is better but will try to answer which i prefer from what i've found in the net.
I definitely have liked Deerhoof more than Sufjan Stevens couse the drums are harder there and i like drums a lot. It's dificult to explain (my english is poor) simply they are closer to my taste. I can write more to fit in the 8 sentences term but it will be empty words so i won't.

2) Rockism is to music what Minimalism is to visual art. It rejects the excesses and reduces the art down to its core features. While the name implies a traditional rock and roll style, it extends further. Artists in other genres that have successfully captured the essence of the genre in their work are also an embodiment of Rockism. In that sense, then, Rockism is less about "rock", per say, and more about cutting off excess material from music that seeks only to artificially inflate it. In other words, Rockism is about killing "filler" material, i.e. music that is music only on a technical level, lacking the creative inspiration that enlivens the artform. Thus, while it may be tempting to criticize Rockism for rejecting creativity towards trying new ideas, in actuality the opposite is true. It encourages new ideas be tried, yet it disdains feigned attempts at originality that merely serve to fill up the allotted time on an album.

3) http://www.newcenter.com/tastefest/2006/media/photos/MOTORCITY_CASINO_MAIN_STAGE/CAT%20POWER%20&%20THE%20MEMPHIS%20RHYTHM%20BAND.jpg

4) I enjoy Deerhoof its creative style that reminds me somewhat of Metric and Broken Social Scene. However, that said, I must admit that I like Sufjan Stevens more. Deerhoof's vocal work, while it's good, sometimes sounds a little too unpolished. While to some degree that is just the style that is being sought, it can get somewhat grating at times, to the point of prompting me to skip to the next track. In contrast, Sufjan Steven's seems more melodic in its style which, at least when comparing these two artists, appeals to me more. Of course, there are some exceptions. For instance, track 4 on The Avalanche, "The Vivian Girls Are Visited In the Night By Saint Dargarius and His Squadron of Benevolent Butterflies", isn't really enjoyable for me and breaks the mood that the other tracks capture so well. Still, in spite of this, on the whole, while I enjoy both artists, if forced to choose one over the other, I enjoy Sufjan Stevens more.

5) One, please.

More specifically, authentic popular music fits the rock and roll paradigm; it is made using the basic rock instrumentation of guitars, bass guitars and drums, and fits the structures of a rock and roll song.

2) Essentially, rockism is a musical worldview (musicview?) or way of interpreting music that uses the archetypical image of rock and roll as the basis for its interpretation of all other music. Of course, “rock and roll” is a complex term itself, but however you slice it, rockism views its origins as sacred and authentic, while condemning the artificiality of mass-produced pop music as well as music that strays from the traditional sound/band structure of “rock and roll,” (e.g. music heavily relying on computerized elements instead of artist-created elements). Although rockism in its purest form is more or less non-existent and widely regarded as myopic, there are ways in which a “rockist” mentality often creeps into the mind of the average music listener unbeknownst to him. We often judge new music or sounds based on what we already know and reject unfamiliar or “weird” timbres. While I feel that rockism is somewhat of a laughable ideology and to belittle it is a bit redundant, I could use a few more sentences, so what the hell. To classify all things not “rock and roll” (again, I’m referring to the definition a rockist would use, however amorphous and contradictory it might be) as artificial and trite is a gross generalization that countless modern artists have proven wrong. Not all music using loops is commercial and reproachable. For example, I consider Gregg Gillis of Girl Talk just as much a creator or artist as any “rock and roller.” In any case, I feel that I’ve written enough now.

3) Cat Power

4) Interesting that you’ve chosen two artists who seem to defy the traditional “rockist” worldview, each in their own way. Sufjan, with his banjo and discordant, sometimes unlistenable, tinkering with song structure (see: Enjoy Your Rabbit, or just see him live… he likes to end songs with what appears to be every horn player puffing his cheeks to maximum capacity, each in a different key signature), and Deerhoof with what can only be called daring instrumental experimentation. But moving right along, a subjective question like this can really only be answered subjectively. While I enjoy both bands, I prefer Sufjan because, frankly, I’ve been listening to him longer and I’ve really formed an emotional connection to his music. Deerhoof can be entertaining depending on my state of mind, but Sufjan’s voice always seems to waft out of the speakers and stir something inside of me. Sure, some of it starts to sound the same, but if you consider the enormous body of work he’s put out in such a short time, you really can’t blame him for a few less-than-stellar efforts when there are so many good ones out there. After listening to a particularly beautiful track of his, it haunts me all day, and it really affects me. I know it’s become cool to hate on Sufjan lately, but I just won’t do it. I guess that’s what makes me fan.

Hmm, you have a point there. I suppose it goes both ways though... I wasn't aware I was applying for a group of people so close minded that they would discriminate against others because an obsession with an artist isn't shared. I thought it was filled with open minded people who didn't force their beliefs upon one another. If I knew I was applying to the musical equivalent of the KKK I wouldn't have bothered. Sorry for being an asshole, keep segregating yourselves, you're good at it.

Dear "grandepois",

Congratulations! You've passed the Oink adversity test, which probes how much musical independence you truly have!

Your invite should arrive in the next day or two.

Thank you.

First there was Gandhi, then there was Martin Luther King JR. Now a new hero emerges...grandepois. I can see it all now, "grandepois paving the way for indie kids everywhere." Yeah, I like that. Good stuff.

Dear "grandepois",

I almost feel bad now. I was just jerking your chain.

Thank you.

I was well aware of that...You were sarcastic so I thought I would play off of that, sorry I assumed you were able to sense when someone wasn't being serious. Who would seriously compare themselves to Gandhi and Martin Luther King?

grandepois, this is an A to B conversation, and you need to C your way out. Oink is not for you. Our community does not want you.

Hello Oink,
I have returned from my fishing trip...I am quite disappointed with the writhing fish at the end of my fishing line. We couldn't go to Lake Tahoe because it was snowing so we ended up in Lake Berryessa. My family only caught tiny babies and since it's Spring I'm guessing that there aren't many big fishes around.

Here's one of the fellas we caught:

And then there's Glory Hole:

better luck next time, CC.

if you have never heard of the Glory Hole before crabcigar's post and want to see more photos of it, doing a google image search for "glory hole" will not help you.
