Look, something strange happened to me today. Not one, but two people came up to me and called me old school, cause I bought 3 CDs today. The weird thing is, as some of you might know, I'm only 14. I'm one of the few people who still buy CDs, when most of my generation buy off iTunes and Limewire. The CDs I have been buying lately are not really from "my generation"(Rage Against Machine, Guns 'n' Roses, stuff like that). What do you think, how do you get your music?

I do, I love cd's. Of course they don't have the vintage charm of vinyls, but I'll take them over downloading (legal or not, that's not the question) any day.

I think it's because I don't feel like I am really buying something when I shop on iTunes. I need something real, something material to feel good about buying music, or else it's just not the same. And there's the collector in me too, I'm very proud of my cd collection, it impresses people :-P

So, what do you think about cd's? Are they here to stay, or obsolete?

I prefer print myself, though both have their place. I still buy CDs, though I also load them onto my iPod. The thing holding me back from eBooks, of course, is that unlike my CDs and iPod, I can't exactly buy 'real' books and convert them to digital in a few seconds. Nevertheless, an ebook reader (such as the Kindle - the iPad, with its backlit screen, is not an ebook reader but a tablet computer, and a very different beast) is something I would like to have for travelling with. When the price comes down to about GBP20.00 (and eventually it will), I will get myself one.

I like MP3s purely because space is tight here, I do still buy CDs of albums that are important to me, and vinyls for the really special ones. (Though I have no record player yet)

tbf I spent about a week researching double-edged shaving gear/techniques, which meant lurking on a bunch of Art of Manliness style message boards. it's kind of cute to see guys with Teddy Roosevelt avatars peacocking their artisanal shaving brushes and belt buckles in front of an audience of other guys with Teddy Roosevelt avatars, but the subtext of "wouldn't we all be better off if we lived like our great-grandfathers" is pretty gross, even on forums without a pronounced MRA agenda. also it's weird how the same dudes who pride themselves on their frugal DIY construction projects are the ones who are spending crazy money on old-timey pocket knives or whatever.

Is there anyone else out there still collecting records? I love sitting back and listening to my vinyl; it's so relaxing! There's something about that delicious crackle that comes only with LPs... I think this thread could be a nice thread to converse in general about records, so feel free to do so, but I'm also wondering if anyone out there has some vinyl they would like to part with. I'm frequently interested in picking up little collections that are presently unused. Feel free to send a PM!

theres a relativist nightmare in determining what if any internet community that phrase could (not) apply to but unlike ilx the f3d0r4 lounge is explicitly about instrumentalizing cool via an object that was widely purported to be cool, 'music' is not really specific enough as a referent

maybe it does seem apt to the particular epoch of belle n seb / girls aloud era brit ilx where the object of common affection were more ideologically coherent and specific rather than just current ilx' normcore common culture of canonical rock music, sitcoms, the nfl etc

I hate having facial hair & I've never been able to get a close shave with electric/cartridge razors

but I can't bring myself to invest in ~$75 of old-timey shaving gear even thought it might pay off in the long run

I felt like a fuddy-duddy.

all these college-aged kids were hanging out in the CD section strictly for tel lulz ("oh my god, the Jonas Brothers! I loved them so much when I was like 12" "I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a CD") while I was all alone in the jazz corner scowling at RVG editions for 15 minutes. I should really only shop for music on weekday afternoons when the only other patrons are crusty old men like myself.

there must be plenty of college kids for whom CDs are more dorky and old-mannish than vinyl (or even cassettes)

Opening this up from a CD through big speakers and it sounds absolutely amazing, which is obviously no surprise.

i buy used cds now for the same reason i bought vinyl in the 90s -- better bargains

my purchases this weekend:

-Jerry Reed greatest hits CD (used): $5.99
-Porter Wagoner greatest hits CD (new): $6.99
-Aiwa Cross Trainer portable CD player (manufactured in June 1999): $6.99
-CueCat (probably unused): $1.99
-3 used paperbacks @ $0.50 apiece and 1 for $1.00

the CDs are birthday gifts for my grandfather, but the discman and CueCat are worrying symptoms of premature retrofetishization

I'm even contemplating re-purchasing certain things on CD that I've already bought FLAC downloads of, just so I have some kind of permanent, tangible copy of that music that will stick around even in the event of catastrophic data loss or some other calamity.

CD's disintegrate quick. If you have a CD from the 80s you will know about this. Old CD's go quiet.

in high school my cds were often eaten by a strange tropical fungus but that seems to have ceased, probably due to better practices on either the manufacturers' parts or mine.

I bought a used copy of Global Communication's 76:14 for $1.50 (£0.97) last week. 'wow, you're really breaking the bank with this one', said the cashier. I didn't laugh.
