Surripere is great - i can't say i've really listened to it.

ok i'm just going to do this now in lieu of what will probably be a bunch of tracks they did before lp5 placing, and since this countdown is happening so slowly and sporadically or else i'm just being impatient (thanks for all your work everyone!). what they managed to do texturally with electronic sound machines is just extraordinary, before iirc a lot more of their production chain became dependent on desktop environments of the time and they were more free to get trickier with their sequencing. the quality of the sound on those releases is just incredibly funky in a way i've never been able to articulate properly. obviously they've always been very good and interesting at composition and arrangement but in my opinion there was a special magic that coalesced around the 93-97 era when their talents for arrangement and sound design melded with a tradition that incorporated what kraftwerk and disco a generation before and techno contemporaneously knew about very basic properties of rhythm, tempo, funk, limbic movement aligned with heartbeats. the space that can be created from that kind of pulse is the reason i love dance music and electronic music and what makes some of their tracks, again mainly from that era, so timeless. it has been a pleasant surprise to return to recent releases and find they never completely lost that magic.

I forget if that's cued to the exact track for Iceland that "Surripere" sounds so much like.

I think Draft requires my attention.

don't think it will place, but "outpt" off ep7 really affects with the repetition and that reedy, sort of woody modem chord-drone. and its unnameable sorts of liquid sky/sucking/light sounds.. maybe one of their "easier" tracks
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Thursday, 2 October 2014 22:08 (nine years ago) link
autechre were always great but they attained sublimity when they largely concealed that syncopated/crunchy sound of the mid 90s and went further into granular synthesis and the excessive, abstracted process music of confied/draft/gg
― C21H23NO5 (nakhchivan), Thursday, 2 October 2014 22:13 (nine years ago) link
yeah that's my position too, but hearing some of the (admittedly mostly not much) earlier stuff & really being taken along with it has been a total thrill, this evening especially
― Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Thursday, 2 October 2014 22:14 (nine years ago) link
surripere is one of the least 'difficult' of those tracks but it has an extreme dysphoric quality above just about anything they did

voted it really high obv
yah it's rly synaesthetic

I had a clear top 4 from lp5, decided to pick two and it was more or less at random, under boac lost out but the drum breakdown is next level unfuckwithable.
Woah leee giving a bit of zing to my cipater image. From look back in anger, well if an anticipater looks forward... Surripere is some Latin conjugation of steal, image is from Whistle and I'll Come to You, Michael Hordern suffering the consequences of his inadvertent theft. Fyi.

anticipate means 'act before' so a cipater is one who merely acts, but then look back in anger is a play ;)

that surripere image is greatgantz is just perfect, just a total immersion, into the voidits the sort of track even bobby gillespie could understand

surripere image yeah. and the gantz image has me a keen anticipater of the cap.iv graphic
gantz is great with or without the brilliant video and feels like a manifesto of sorts

Woah leee giving a bit of zing to my cipater image.
When I added the text to the original image you gave me, the palette got confused and was saved with the Miami Vice colors. Dawned on me that preserving the interesting glitch would be well in keeping with the poll.

as someone who likes to revive really terrible ancient ilx threads from time to time, i must say that most of the early refs to confield and gantz get it fairly well, including dj martian who included confield in his top 250 records of the first half of 2001

So I put Cipater as my #1. I think it encapsulates everything I love about Autechre, and is also a significant track nostalgically for me as well. The opening crunchy hip hop beat is immediately engaging, and really builds on everything I enjoyed with Tri-Rep but with more expressiveness. The atmosphere is quietly ominous and the analog lead synths are sublime as they drench the background of the track with reverb and different percussion elements begin to fold into the mix. The opening grooves. A lot. Almost more so than any early/mid period Autechre. Additional elements come in play both rhythmically and melodically, and finally this bubbling undercurrent of squelchy synth tone comes in and the beat begins to start to mutate. You can tell these guys wanted to do more and have these pieces constantly evolve instead of evolving step by step; revisiting Chiastic really does seem to predict Confield and Draft. More and more does Cichlisuite and LP5 seem to awkwardly stick out in their catalog.
But that transition. When the breakdown happens my favorite synth tone Ae has ever produced fades in... the reverberated analog bass (see Medrey/Key Nell 3/Teartear for other examples of this bass... might be a Juno-106?) comes in menacingly and then begins to solo into the one of the most gorgeous melodic progressions these guys have put out. And then the beat reconstructs into a stronger groove and the layered snowy synths fade in as the lead bass continues to solo onward and upward in quite a syncopated, swing heavy flow. It's fucking gorgeous... and then the melody climbs an octave, the original bassline returns and the melody expands into becoming a nearly sustained arpgeggio. At this point, I usually always get chills.
Older Ae has always had this transcendent, almost spiritual melodic quality that I've always valued above their synaesthetic, sculptured, and "jazzier" material post LP5, and Cipater has always been that song for me that perfectly embodied this as well as having one my favorite beats they've ever produced. The Psi Onyx remix and Keynell 4 also exhibit these traits and are all in my top 5.

Never been a fan of Cipater but will revisit after reading octobeard's post
Maphive is amazing, a medieval battlefield of a tune to which someone brings a broken piano during half time oranges
― Shepard Toney Album (dog latin), Thursday, 2 October 2014 23:49 (nine years ago) link
And its true. Chiastic Slide anticipates post-Confield Ae far more than LP5 or EP7. Those records are like a detour in some ways.
