in college in the early 90s i knew a dude (with a curiously small head) who once played tetris until his score reached whatever power of 2 where the game no longer kept score

took a while for us to notice but then he began screaming that he'd won tetris, and tbh i could not gainsay him

we later named a cat, who also had a curiously small head, after him

the cat's actual owner did not appreciate it

how old is that kid who beat it? like 14? I've always noticed that speed runners are often very young, something tells me my fingers couldn't keep up with the 'roll' method for more than 30 seconds at my age

i went out on a date with a 21-year-old (yeah once i found out she was 21 that was the end of that) a couple weeks ago who's super into the tetris speedrunning community. retro gaming in particular seems to hold a strong appeal for young speedrunners, especially the queer autistic ones.

(re: queer speedrunners, it sure can't hurt that the classic tetris world championship is hosted here in PDX - it's the highlight of the portland retro gaming festival.)

I almost wonder if the teenage years are the physical peak for speedrunners, like once you hit 20 maybe you can't move your fingers like that, I dunno. I thought about this playing one of the new Mario Party games which re-used a bunch of old minigames and there are some button mashers where I was like, hmmmm I used to be a lot better that this

I think it's more that when you're a teen you can prioritize speedrunning goals as the most important thing in your life - you can dedicate yourself to hobbies like that because you have the literal time and because you have that youthful passion that drives you in those years. But yes definitely helps to have those quick youthful reflexes!

If you ever watch that speedrun charity event AGDQ it's FULL of trans speedrunners. Seems to be a really good community.

yeah it took me seeing a lot of people transition before i was able to figure shit out, one of them was narcissa wright

it's been awesome seeing the community evolve, i started following TASes when morimoto's SMB3 video came out around '03 and since then we've all just gotten gayer and gayer

showed my 9 year old son the video of the kid beating it (well, the last 4 minutes of it) and he now has a new hero, it's great

we play this version of Tetris on the Switch called "Tetris 99"...its a battle style game that imo is way too complicated, kinda underscores what a perfect game Tetris is, it commands your full attention at all times
