I'm the #1 voter for Garbage. I remember back in 1995 when music was expensive it was great getting a 40 minute album for the price of a single. Even if the music wasn't that great. However that wasn't the case here, two tracks on this still ones that kill me every time.

It's probably my least favourite cover though

only 7 votes for Draft? ah well. my #1, obviously

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Monday, 29 September 2014 01:45 (nine years ago) link

also it has the best cover maybe in popular music history

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Monday, 29 September 2014 01:46 (nine years ago) link

Love Garbage, when I was putting my ballot together, its ambient vibe just hit me in the right spot: mournful and beautiful.

draft my #1 album

nakhchivan, Monday, 29 September 2014 01:50 (nine years ago) link

Checking my list I actually had Garbage at number 2. Oops.
Imago, agreed about the draft artwork. Wish I had that on vinyl.

I realized when listening to albums in order to put together a ballot that I never completed that in fact, the recent Autechre is the band I love most. Didn't expect that.

things i voted for

Gantz Graf
Peel Session

LP5
Untilted
Confield
Quaristice.Quadrange.ep.ae
Tri Repetae
Peel Session 2
Exai

nakhchivan, Monday, 29 September 2014 02:24 (nine years ago) link

Voted for Draft 7.30, Confield, Untilted and Gantz Graf in that order. Will be using the tracks poll to direct any concerted further listening, but I've heard stuff from all the LPs at least, and this run of material, for me at least, stands out (above most music, let alone Autechre)

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Monday, 29 September 2014 02:36 (nine years ago) link

my ballot ... also surprised ep7 didn't place

#1 tri repetae
lp5
envane
chiastic slide
anti EP
anvil vapre
EP7
confield
amber
gantz graf

the late great, Monday, 29 September 2014 03:06 (nine years ago) link

glad that gantz graf made the top 10. I almost voted it #1. It probably is their high point, but ended up voting confield #1 because there's just because it's a full album and there is therefore more stuff to enjoy.

my ballot:

1. Confield
2. Gantz Graf
3. Draft 7.30
4. EP7
5. Quaristice.Quadrange.ep.ae
6. Exai
7. LP5
8. Garbage
9. Chiastic Slide
10. Oversteps

My list is dedicated to sixteen years of not getting the love for LP5

Chiastic Slide
Amber
Garbage
Incunabula
Confield
Key Nell
Tri Repetae
Anvil Vapre
Peel Sessions 1
Ganz Graf

the late great, Monday, 29 September 2014 06:04 (nine years ago) link

Hah! I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that people were pining for the 'old' Autechre when LP5 came out.

cichleee suite (Leee), Monday, 29 September 2014 06:19 (nine years ago) link

Was surprised that I couldn't find a place for Amber on my list. Always felt it was rough and an unfinished vision that was put into focus much, much better on subsequent EPs and Tri Repetae. Exai, while a touch bloated, is a sonic monster of beauty and nearly the best thing they've done. I somewhat regret not having Key Nell in my ballot. It's probably their best EP when all is said and done.

1 Chiastic Slide
2 Exai
3 Tri Repetae
4 LP5
5 Untilted
6 Envane
7 Incunabula
8 Draft 7:30
9 Anvil Vapre
10 Cichlisuite

octobeard, Monday, 29 September 2014 07:52 (nine years ago) link

No Amber for me, either. I fact I was surprised at how little time I have these days for the albums prior to LP5 ... Still like 'em, just never seem to listen anymore. I would say it was down to over-familiarity, but I play the contemporaneous EPs all the time. Anti - Garbage - Anvil Vapre - Envane - Cichlisuite - Peel Session is a pretty formidable run.

Also, not enough love for Quaristice!!

1. LP5
2. Envane
3. Draft 7.30
4. Garbage
5. Peel Session 1
6. Untilted
7. Quaristice
8. Exai
9. Anti
10. Confield

don't get LP5? have ryan schreiber explain it to you!

haha

Their sound has come to define drill-n-bass

hmmmmmmm ...

So, rather than looking at Autechre as a crappy, self- indulgent, overly- experimental release from an otherwise brilliant band

It's their least experimental release by far -- that's why I've never been high on it!

In a personal aside, I think "LP5" was the most I ever paid for a new CD (non-special edition, box set, etc.) I was in Ottawa and I could only find one good store for electronic music. I think I paid 33 CDN -- the price only added to my disappointment about the quality of the album.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 29 September 2014 08:45 (nine years ago) link

LP5 is brilliant. Very surprised at EP7 not making it - sometimes it's my favourite thing they ever did.

zip it shrimpy (dog latin), Monday, 29 September 2014 09:03 (nine years ago) link

The one I don't get the love for is Tri Repetae - always saw that as a transitional album between old and mid-period Autechre with too much reliance on crunchy hip hop beats (not bad in themselves) but not enough melodic touches.

my short opinions of those are

Confield = really cool but it makes me feel like I have the flu
Draft = too abstract and backwards for me, still fascinating though
Untilted = fucking rules, especially the first 3 tracks which are straight up bricks in the washer
Quaristice = makes much more sense if you see it as a tribute to "computer music" as a whole. I don't like the whole "you have to curate this" aspect to it but the music is very good
Oversteps = tis all a bit plinky plonky (Sean's words) but it gets you in such a cool zone. "d sho qub" is my favorite Autechre track ever. Move of 10 EP is awesome. proper bangers the likes of which they'd never done.
Exai = the cure for not having a headache. I see the two discs as two separate albums, almost by necessity. I can't listen to it all at once. In retrospect kinda funny how they save stuff like "recks on" for the end
elseq = can't forget my first impression here, "feed1" sounding like the most terrifying thing ever and my mouth just going agape during "elyc6 0nset"; it's totally broken down and there's still like 12 minutes to go. amazing stuff but heading a bit into "how much is too much" territory
NTS Sessions = jesus christ

frogbs, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 20:03 (four years ago) link

I think my regard for Oversteps is highly determined by d sho qub

frame casual (dog latin), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 21:06 (four years ago) link

I find it strange that someone could like Untitled and not Draft. But then Autechre has always been an aural magic eye picture so it's completely subjective

frame casual (dog latin), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 21:07 (four years ago) link

off topic but 'Untilted' is a bitch of a word to write w/ all this autocorrect etc.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 21:13 (four years ago) link

Untilted's rhythms go way harder and it doesn't feel like each percussive sound is constantly tumbling down a halfpipe. "6IE.CR" is fucking great though.

frogbs, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 21:13 (four years ago) link

I feel kind of like that about Confield. The kick drum sound on Cfern hurts my brain, and Pen Expers sounds like someone hoovering up screws. Eidetic Casein sounds like thousand toy ambulances running out of batteries. There are some moments of respite (Uviol is lovely) but on the whole I just don't like the sound choices.
