did it ever get conclusively established whether the bottle opener was racist

the only thing to be said in defence of the 'not racist' crowd is that the sort of iconography it duplicates is not quite as familiar in england, and where it does occur it doesn't look quite the same

largely because unlike the people who came up with darlie toothpaste et al, its authors would never have seen any black people so instead of a sort of monstrous deformation of the familiar, they are more purely fictive, rather like the chinoiserie figurines of the 18th and early 19th century

louis when I was reading this thread from the beginning I didn't realise that unfished business was you which has not been the case with any of your other noms de theatre so you may have a point

obviously most of the world is oblivious to how race functions in brazil but it's sort of peculiar how people who do not identify as black/preto (iirc ronaldinho identifies as pardo/mixed or mb moreno) are considered black elsewhere. there's an argument that within brazil the distinction doesn't really change how ppl are treated, and it's certainly more true abroad wrt anti-black racism; ronaldinho was called an ape by a mexican politician recently (he's moved to queretaro)

it feels worth noting that ronaldinho had cosmetic dental surgery last year

theres only a vague correlation between how brazilian people identify themselves racially and their ancestry

very much doubt whether ronaldinho identifies as 'pardo' though

they arent quite as arbitrary as all that and it very much depends on what part of the country, rio grande do sul where he comes from has large populations of german, swiss, polish people etc and a different sort of identity to equatorial brazil, ronaldinho is i think petit-bourgeois by birth unlike most famous brazilian players which would shift his terms of identification somewhat but id imagine he would still be de facto classified as preto by most

there's a lot of debate on that brazilian blog about self-identification vs perceptions & how/if/to what extent ppl distance themselves from blackness. the number of brazilians identifying as preto has shrunk a lot & it's an issue for anti-racist campaigners

Ronaldinho has made 14 appearances in all competitions - scoring only three goals and making two assists.

However, the Mexican club's fitness coach Roberto Bassagaisteguy recently revealed the 34-year-old hasn't been pulling his weight in training.
