just reading about the battle system, which by the sounds of it is even more banal than FFXIII and essentially boils down to "press A to Awesome"

adam, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 13:32 (seven years ago) link

no sign of cactaur yet

adam, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 13:35 (seven years ago) link

Played this last night for a few hours. The combat is reasonably fun, the characters I'm not fussed on but I don't hate them either (I played this in Japanese w/ subs which probably helps since the English voice acting for past games has been largely Not So Great). The story seems pretty arbitrary at the moment since I'm mostly running around a desert killing stuff for cash, hopefully will develop into something actually decent. Lots of fan service, e.g. you can buy buy old FF soundtracks for the in-car radio. Above all my biggest impression is that the graphics are fucking fantastic.

Yeah, I'm liking it so far.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 13:51 (seven years ago) link

in the tutorial, a tiny fox spirit texts you the rules of the game, and when you complete the "phase mechanic" section of the tutorial, it sends you a cactuar emoji

i'm not joking; this happens in the first 10 minutes if you choose to do the tutorial

oh yeah! also a cat gave me a quest to go fishing

adam, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 20:30 (seven years ago) link

why does that make me want to buy it immediately

something is wrong with me

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 20:59 (seven years ago) link

no i understand; it satiates some sort of childlike whimsy and suggests it can be found in this PRODUCT yum yum

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

seriously, that really did it and seriously i did just buy it.

tons of fun so far. love the combat, the bro-gang are likeable, the atmosphere is great and the world is a really nice place to be in. everything i wanted from a modern FF.

also i can listen to a CD of the FFIV soundtrack in the car. awesomeness.

jamiesummerz, Thursday, 1 December 2016 13:32 (seven years ago) link

enjoy final fantasy xv, fishing/kitten fans!

i played more yesterday & gosh darn it it's still fun

mint challop (Will M.), Thursday, 1 December 2016 15:26 (seven years ago) link

i really appreciate the combat in that you can hit a warp point or just run out of the melee to chill for a second and rethink tactics/equipment.

also straight up wrecking trash mobs is very satisfying (like the first time you encounter imperial soldiers)

adam, Thursday, 1 December 2016 15:29 (seven years ago) link

the sprint-chaining mechanic is also legit one of my favourite gameplay mechanics of the year. at first i was like "what is even the point tho" and 5 mins later i was like "YEEEEEEAAAHHH BABYYYYY"

mint challop (Will M.), Thursday, 1 December 2016 15:38 (seven years ago) link

goddammit you guys are going to make me buy this aren't you :(

trump le monde (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 1 December 2016 15:39 (seven years ago) link

I had the opportunity to sing some of the choral stuff on this and couldn't because of a stupid conflict, grr.

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 13:03 (seven years ago) link

this game is so good. idgaf. my chocobo is electric red. my recipe book is fat as hell. when me and my dudes go for a ride we listen to the final fantasy iv soundtrack.

adam, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 15:49 (seven years ago) link

Do you get speakers on the chocobo?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 15:57 (seven years ago) link

on the chocobo, at least so far, it just plays the chocobo music. most transit time is spent in the car (the regalia), which is cosmetically customizable and has a cd player.

adam, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 16:01 (seven years ago) link

i dont have a ps4 unfortunately but ive been watching people play this and its incredible, just wonderfully self-aware in a way that these games generally are not

ciderpress, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 16:07 (seven years ago) link

* you can buy an mp3 player in some shops to listen to the soundtracks when you are outside the car

jamiesummerz, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 16:55 (seven years ago) link

that's amazing, where did you get it?

adam, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link

This game is a bit buggy and full of mad decisions, and totally unpolished, and the lipsync is awful, and the dialogue is nuts. And all those weird things and everything about it that makes it crazy, all the things that rabid weirdo internet people are telling me make it 'A TOTAL TRASHFIRE OMG WHAT A BOMB' are parts of the reason why its so fun to experience.

jamiesummerz, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link

hmm it was either in Lestallum just after i met Iris, or after that at the shop just before the big bridge with the waterfall underneath (2nd dungeon). Chapter 3.

jamiesummerz, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 16:58 (seven years ago) link

this is sitting on my television and waiting until about the 18th when i can give up on this fucking year and can invite downstairs millennial gamer to put in some holiday sessions

A big shout out goes to the lamb chops, thos lamb chops (ulysses), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 17:08 (seven years ago) link

oh man the autosave on this is not often enough. finished the second dungeon (took about an hour), got outside and ran into 4 enemies just above my level, and died. none of the dungeon progressed was saved. ANNOYING. so make sure you manual save. did an hour or two of side stuff instead and will go back tomorrow to get it done.

jamiesummerz, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 01:02 (seven years ago) link

aw that sucks. i am an elderly pc gamer so i save compulsively.

on chapter 7. this game gets so much so right and does it all in such a bizarre sui generis manner (the characters and their interactions, the world in general, all the seemingly pointless systems) that i totally forgive the stuff it gets wrong (there's a really dumb stealth section in chapter 6 but it's pretty short). plus it's all so intensely final fantasy-ish so in playing i'm caught between shock-of-the-new and fuzzy nostalgia AND, finally, the story is actually kind of interesting which is the first time that's happened since... FFIX? (and i liked 10, 11, 12 and 14) (13 bad)

adam, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 13:49 (seven years ago) link

ha ha about 20 hours in it turns into ff13

adam, Sunday, 11 December 2016 03:42 (seven years ago) link

millennial gamer neighbor hung out and watched me play then pointed out that in this game i am playing the role of "part of team fuccboi" and it has made it difficult not to think of my character as such

A big shout out goes to the lamb chops, thos lamb chops (ulysses), Thursday, 15 December 2016 05:56 (seven years ago) link

okay, i tried this for like three hours and i hate it. I think i'm gonna play dark souls iii again instead.

three weeks pass...

only at about chapter 6 but i think i kinda love this game. despite being terrible at combat, i'm loving the characters, cruising in the regalia, the setting, and the story (so far..). as with all the open world games, has a bit too many fetch quests that i feel like i have to complete, but yeah best FF since IX or X for sure.

its a big fat mess, but a very very lovable one.

jamiesummerz, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 00:20 (seven years ago) link

the second it went linear i lost all interest, haven't played it since

adam, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 02:10 (seven years ago) link

i was deeply deeply disappointed with the combat; it's sloppy and I don't feel like i have any control over it. the camping sequences and cooking and photography all feels not fun to me.

A big shout out goes to the lamb chops, thos lamb chops (ulysses), Tuesday, 17 January 2017 16:51 (seven years ago) link

i have a feeling (no spoilers please!!) that at the end of the game there will be some sort of slideshow of all the photos you've saved throughout your journey. i'm 100% down with the road trip aspect of the game so i think it'll be fun to see all the pictures along the way after spending like 40 hours with the game.

mostly agree with the combat aspect though i feel like i'm getting better at it and there are hints that it goes quite deep. i mean every time i cast a spell i hit my allies and take away 50% of their hp, there's got to be more to it right?

nine months pass...

Square Enix just announced in a livestream that three of the four upcoming pieces of downloadable content for Final Fantasy XV have been cancelled. The one remaining will be out next year.

Back in April, we were told there’d be four more pieces of DLC coming for the 2016 game, with episodes called Ardyn, Aranea, Luna and Noctis. Only Ardyn is left, and it’ll be out in March 2019.

In addition to the cancellations, it was also announced that Hajime Tabata, the man who took over from Tetsuya Nomura as director of the game in 2013, has left Square Enix.

reading the tea leaves, i guess not enough people are playing/buying DLC to justify making more. i still haven't played XV at all, but i was thinking of taking it on sometime the next year or two when i can nab it at a bargain price.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 8 November 2018 05:25 (five years ago) link

the first season of ffxv dlc did well i think. they just built tabata a new studio for some big new project he was gonna direct so this is a very sudden change of direction,
