I've been looking for one for ages (at a "reasonable" cost) myself.

No artists today, or very few have a real vibe, a real mystique, or something I can't ever quite articulate or explain correctly... Nina is one...

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 04:39 (nine years ago) link

otm

there are so many artists who really strain for a mysterious presence or mystique and she just has it without even reaching out for it, it's just part and parcel of her lyrics and singing and guitar playing.

no news on a new album, but it's funny how she and Kennan keep making cameos in Will Oldham videos (even though they've never sang together afaik):

Seeing this kinda makes me wish Nina would get into acting (as well as making music obviously)

MaresNest, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 10:19 (nine years ago) link

god please don't ever have nina duet with bonnie dumbbell...

scott seward, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 13:29 (nine years ago) link

she does in that video above. unless that's someone else.

akm, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 15:34 (nine years ago) link

it's someone else. she's lip synching, just like she's lip-synching here. weird how they shot two different videos for two different versions of that song.

yusef latifah (unregistered), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 15:53 (nine years ago) link

I like Will Oldham, but a Bonnie/Nina duet album would not be a high point in either of their discographies, and he's done enough throwaway collaborations as it is.

yusef latifah (unregistered), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 15:56 (nine years ago) link

on spotify if you go to her artist page there's a single there from 2008, two songs that appear to be from the Jim White/You Follow Me sessions called "What She Doesn't Know" and "Your Red Nose"

really good stuff, two new Nina songs you might not have heard, at least I hadn't....

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 16:07 (nine years ago) link

there are also non-album tracks on singles on cry cry baby and you can take your time off outlaster

apparently she doesn't know how to write a non-excellent song these are all great

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 16:08 (nine years ago) link

the (4 or 5) peel sessions are full of things that aren't on the records. the one mp3 blog that was sharing them got asked to take them down, i've heard, ahead of an official release. but this was years ago and nothing ever appeared.

(repeating myself, sorry)

i was getting a little worried that she had quietly retired or something, but I think she's just a very private person who's taken a break. I'm just glad to hear she's working on music, I doubt she'd say something if there wasn't anything in the works.

She made an album with Albini? I'm sure I saw pictures a couple of years ago

MaresNest, Sunday, 30 July 2017 12:27 (six years ago) link

she made ALL her albums with albini.

koogs, Sunday, 30 July 2017 13:03 (six years ago) link

Sure but I saw online somewhere that she had been recording with him again and I seem to recall a pic from a couple of years ago of a stone wine cellar repurposed as a recording studio.

instagram hashtag search reveals she performed at the Guggenheim Museum in November, but it looks like just a one-off performance of a song she wrote for the event (ctrl+F Nastasia here):

excellent sleuthing, nomar! I was beginning to worry she'd lost her muse, but this song has an emotional heft that was frustratingly absent from her children's fashion designs

pg13tentacion (unregistered), Sunday, 30 July 2017 20:32 (six years ago) link

She's playing the Electrical Audio 20th/Hideout Block party in Chicago in September. Seems like she's recorded some stuff over the yrs that hasn't seen the light of day.

chr1sb3singer, Monday, 31 July 2017 13:14 (six years ago) link

a lot of the peel session songs never appeared anywhere else. there was talk of a compilation of those (based on a takedown notice on a website that had shared a bunch of them) but i've not heard anything since.

koogs, Monday, 31 July 2017 15:02 (six years ago) link

wow that song in the video is stunning

It's a bit skreechy for me.

the prerecorded backing vocals don't really work for me, but otherwise I love it

I'd like to see a compilation of her Peel sessions in their entirety, rather than just the unreleased material. the session with Huun Huur Tu is one of my favorite live performances from any artist

jim white just told me that nina recorded an album with albini and jeff parker. that fabled day has come!

also jim thinking of labels that would want to reissue You Follow Me which has been out of print forever. i told him i thought drag city might be the way to go.

omar little, Friday, 23 February 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link

Yay! And I had no idea You Follow Me is out of print, that's a crime and a shame.

She recorded with Parker and Longberg-Holm and a few other folks back in September with Steve.

chr1sb3singer, Friday, 23 February 2018 18:51 (six years ago) link

Yeah I've been looking for a copy of You Follow Me forever. Never seen one.

Evan, Friday, 23 February 2018 18:56 (six years ago) link

You can get used CDs of it p cheap on Amazon. Vinyl is pricey tho.
