Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

I accidentally clicked into this thread and have no idea wtf is going on, I think it's best for my sanity to keep it that way.

Hakeem Olajuwon Howard (Leee), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 21:15 (nine years ago) link

off-topic kinda, but this story is pretty great and tangentially relates to abuse of RICO charges

Mordy, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 21:15 (nine years ago) link

did any post the video where the #gamergate dude lost his shit at weird twitter ppl?

Lamp, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 21:16 (nine years ago) link

(lol, also kinda related for a reason i didn't notice until this second - weigel wrote it) xp

Mordy, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 21:16 (nine years ago) link

I hope GamerGate lasts forever. I hope there's some unrecognizable descendant of it still trending a year from now.

jmm, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 21:19 (nine years ago) link

Now that I think about it, I wonder if this is going to end up with this bullshit crossing over into the other bullshit that is politics - I can kind of imagine Rick Perry going for this (I can definitely imagine Herman Cain going for it).

I recently discovered that music journalists have been colluding on a message board

polyphonic, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 21:21 (nine years ago) link

yeah i wonder if the real effect of this won't be conservative media outlets setting up game zones

goole, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 21:24 (nine years ago) link

oh shiiiiiiit xp

so exciting to see the boy nero back in the game. his own journalistic ethics didn't extend to paying people who wrote for his shitty online mag last year http://maxdunbar.wordpress.com/2013/01/09/milo-yiannopoulous-and-the-kernel/

oppet, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 22:10 (nine years ago) link

hilarious the disparity betweem the degree to which the 4channers were actually and specifically and consciously and maliciously conspiring to defame zoe quinn et al and ruin their careers and break the law in doing so, and the piddling degree to which the games journalists were conspiring to do, well, anything really. i mean, i know this is obvious. there seems a much clearer comparison between the #gamergaters and that terrible breitbart spawn who took down Acorn and did all that crepey stuff with that girl, than games journalists and journolist. but there's little value in pointing that out when wingers see nothing wrong in what the bleepblorper got up to.

I am a member of the game writers google group. 70% of the emails are about sharing PR contact info, asking for help when stumped on pre-release review games or setting up online sessions for those review games. The other 30% are about cats or pro wrestling. It's incredibly boring, which is why I only subscribe to the digest now.

so, i have been ignoring this for the most part, is there something i should be mad about?

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 18 September 2014 19:50 (nine years ago) link

UMS i saw someone retweet you yesterday and you seem mad about something

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 18 September 2014 19:51 (nine years ago) link

it's a lot of territorial pissing from basement dwellers

bnw, Thursday, 18 September 2014 19:57 (nine years ago) link

that's what it looks like at a glance but i didn't want to dismiss it out of hand

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 18 September 2014 20:03 (nine years ago) link

ya might as well, it's the same tripe repeated over and over again

Nhex, Thursday, 18 September 2014 20:18 (nine years ago) link

Actually today was interesting, which means I have been spending too much time paying attention to this. But GamerGate appears to have been.. chased off.. 4chan?

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 18 September 2014 21:42 (nine years ago) link

oughtn't click to 4chan at work

jacobin piece undercooked

Mordy, Thursday, 18 September 2014 22:17 (nine years ago) link

it's just lag00n's in thread strong take (gaming = consumerism) + unpacked into verbosity

Mordy, Thursday, 18 September 2014 22:19 (nine years ago) link

idk i thought it was pretty good

lag∞n, Thursday, 18 September 2014 22:31 (nine years ago) link

idk i expect more from jacobin i guess

Mordy, Thursday, 18 September 2014 22:32 (nine years ago) link

but tbf consumerism is pretty much ubiquitous on our culture so maybe its unfair to pick on teh poor gamers, in the preceding piece he does spell out how everyone is a geek now https://www.jacobinmag.com/2013/08/on-geek-culture

lag∞n, Thursday, 18 September 2014 22:33 (nine years ago) link

this is good:

There are a few small issues with this analysis. One is the notion that the slights imagined by gamers are just that: imaginary. But they aren’t, and gamers must be taken at face value when they claim to feel threatened. Gamer culture is under threat, though the notion that it’s dead or dying is both overstated and premature.

When your identity has been manufactured by corporations urging you to consume certain things in prescribed ways, then any change, no matter how small, is an existential threat. When women challenge decades of almost exclusively male fantasies of sex and power, this alters the content the gamer consumes. And when that content is altered, gamer identity itself under threat. The vitriol isn’t contrived or artificially manufactured. It has a source.

Neoliberalism has made geeks of us all: jocks, nerds, and dweebs alike.
*groooooan*

Nhex, Friday, 19 September 2014 02:26 (nine years ago) link

how to write for Jacobin:

1. Identify a thing that's definitely bad.
2. Blame neoliberalism for that thing.
3. Something something Adorno?

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Friday, 19 September 2014 05:36 (nine years ago) link

i mean

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 19 September 2014 06:11 (nine years ago) link

um neoliberalism is bad hello

lag∞n, Friday, 19 September 2014 13:50 (nine years ago) link

it's not that there aren't interesting things to still say about neoliberalism, but that well is pretty dry in 2014.

Mordy, Friday, 19 September 2014 13:54 (nine years ago) link

naw i agree that those on the left tend to just call everything and everyone they dont like neoliberalism

lag∞n, Friday, 19 September 2014 13:57 (nine years ago) link

but i mean its just one sentence

lag∞n, Friday, 19 September 2014 13:58 (nine years ago) link

i think someone very bright could write a very interesting piece about the history of gaming as it intertwines w/ (as well as subverts) neoliberalism + consumerism. i envision something like Attali's Noise but for games instead of music.
