Uhh, that was quite intentional.

Pretend is hot garbage

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 15 September 2014 18:10 (nine years ago) link

Also Matthew trammel is a good writer I don't think he nec. meant the wiz thing as a compliment

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 15 September 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

yeah as a neutral statement i agree w/ him

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 September 2014 18:41 (nine years ago) link

The song definitely needs something imo... there's a lot of space there it doesn't know how to fill

Evan R, Monday, 15 September 2014 18:48 (nine years ago) link

xps guess that was a lil too subtle for me, Herbie Handcock

een, Monday, 15 September 2014 19:08 (nine years ago) link

meh these non-"2 on" songs are boring, not sure she will ever get interesting ime

Are y'all about to pull a Jessie Ware/Imagine It Was Us on this woman and constantly judge every new track by how it stacks up against the one song in her discography that was actually atypical of her usual sound?

Greer, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 01:14 (nine years ago) link

feel like jessie ware's recent output has been judged against far more than "imagine it was us"

idk, i guess i'm still checking for tinashe. i cherrypicked some of her mixtape tracks & like a few of em. just not v excited for this album yet.

dyl, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 02:42 (nine years ago) link

Jessie ware is dope, this is trash. easy

it's a slow night

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 03:05 (nine years ago) link

i'm with j0rdan that linda perry doing r&b sounds most unwelcome, but i don't really see what "pretend" has to do with that. just sounds in the lane of all the other songs this year aiming to sound a bit like deep brandy album cuts off afrodisiac

don't think either new one is a patch on "2 on" (obv) and i hope it's not all in this vein but they're def better than anything from her mixtape days, i could see them clicking into place in album context

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 10:16 (nine years ago) link

The more I hear from this album the less sense I have of what it's trying to be. This is track 2 from the record, and its pacing and long, wonky guitar outro spit in the face of album sequencing best practices

Awesome!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:18 (nine years ago) link

it's a pretty solid album

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:28 (nine years ago) link

it feels very zeitgeisty in a contained way

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:28 (nine years ago) link

that's vague

it feels zeitgeisty in that it tracks along post-drake, post-aaliyah is a goddess R&B but not like fka twigs or something where it's *all* about that

insofar as it's an album with inherent commercial motivations that still manages to sound 'hip' it feels perhaps even more idiosyncratic and considered than something like twigs where the aesthetic is really the meat of the album

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:31 (nine years ago) link

not that the two need to be pitted against each other or anything -- i like the twigs album a lot too

could swap jhene aiko out w/ twigs and i think the argument still holds

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:31 (nine years ago) link

I am very curious to hear this. does the stream not work for anyone? soundcloud told me it was because I was in the wrong country

rob, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:34 (nine years ago) link

Everything else on her soundcloud plays for me except the album stream.

Greer, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 15:46 (nine years ago) link

About halfway through, and am enjoying this - Aquarius seems like a really suitable title, given the full on shiny, aquatic dub sonics and subsumptive dynamics. And, ah, pan-pipes.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 16:25 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, those pan-pipes...

Also about halfway through, also enjoying it.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 16:26 (nine years ago) link

it feels zeitgeisty in that it tracks along post-drake, post-aaliyah is a goddess R&B but not like fka twigs or something where it's *all* about that

what? the strength of the twigs album is that the pre-release narrative about that aesthetic is a gigantic red herring b/c it's not that relevant to the album, which feels like it's in another lineage entirely. it's got tinges of r&b about it but certainly not the real zeitgeisty sad-drake-r&b/glacial-aaliyah-vibes sort, and it's a v minor component anyway

lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 18:10 (nine years ago) link

How Many Times is amazing.

Greer, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

The stream I think is UK only but it worked for me using hola.

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 21:22 (nine years ago) link

oh thank you, I recently moved to Canada from the US and have been meaning to figure out a good vpn

rob, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:51 (nine years ago) link

Man, I love the end of Bet, with the final thick chord, and then the guitar solo playing that little riff, which then becomes the bass-riff on Cold Sweat.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 00:25 (nine years ago) link

Half-expect Enya-sample from Ready or Not to drop at the start of Bet.

The best parts of this record recall Aaliyah's s/t slowjams.

It's crazy long tho, reminds me of Goldenheart that way - could have been a bit more concise.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 2 October 2014 06:59 (nine years ago) link

It's only 12 songs in 56 minutes? Less than Beyonce. I mean, all those interludes and the fact that it's sonically kinda the same makes it a bit hard to handle, but I can already almost remember the track-order, which to me usually signifies that I'll listen to the record many many times. I really like it, guys!

Frederik B, Thursday, 2 October 2014 14:05 (nine years ago) link

Version I've got has 18 tracks, is this a mistake?

MikoMcha, Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:39 (nine years ago) link

i think he's discounting the interludes

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:41 (nine years ago) link

Oh yeah, fair enough. Maybe it is quite short. I've only listened through a couple of times so far.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:07 (nine years ago) link

Is this legit streaming somewhere yet in the U.S., or only everywhere but the U.S. still?

Evan R, Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:08 (nine years ago) link

it's on itunes radio i'm pretty sure

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 2 October 2014 22:21 (nine years ago) link

this is sort of exactly what i expected but it's just a very superior execution on one listen, though if i was brandy i'd be so mad that afrodisiac killed my career and a decade later everyone's trying to ape it

lex pretend, Friday, 3 October 2014 12:42 (nine years ago) link

"all hands on deck" is a banger, almost sounds like it should be a girl group song

the slow murky rest...obv one listen is not enough but it felt like they had enough personality and individuality to avoid the usual zzz pitfalls of slow sad submarine music

lex pretend, Friday, 3 October 2014 12:43 (nine years ago) link

Hey this is indeed very good. I was maybe hoping for a few more surprises or exclamation mark moments, because this aesthetic is a little over familiar, but the material is top notch. I imagine it'll open up more when I'm not listening to it in an office

Evan R, Friday, 3 October 2014 17:17 (nine years ago) link

i never heard any of the mixtapes that were supposedly so different from "2 On" and probably further from my tastes, so i really didn't know what to expect from this album, but i'm very impressed, it holds together really well.

Just heard this one. Do people not like this? I think it’s one of the best r&b songs I’ve heard this year. The beat and transition is insane. Synth in transition sort of reminded me of boards of canada? Need to listen to it more but loved it on first listen.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 2 September 2023 03:30 (seven months ago) link

it's one of my favourite songs this year!

the 'album' is out next week, though it's only 7 tracks and apparently a second half is coming next year?

ufo, Saturday, 2 September 2023 03:52 (seven months ago) link

Yes to "Talk to me Nice." co-produced by Nosaj Thing and Scoop DeVille, who each have done a song for Kendrick Lamar and worked with a bunch of other folks in Los Angeles

curmudgeon, Saturday, 2 September 2023 04:08 (seven months ago) link

yeah it's incredible, my favorite thing she's done. transition so massive it feels like two great songs in one.

soup of magpies (geoffreyess), Saturday, 2 September 2023 11:46 (seven months ago) link

I take it this means you were all as unimpressed with "Needs" as I was?

rob, Saturday, 2 September 2023 14:48 (seven months ago) link

Oh Nosaj Thing produces? No wonder I got a BOC vibe for a moment there.

Tinashe getting briefly interviewed for a minute or so on ABC show Good Morning America and then doing song "Tightrope"

curmudgeon, Monday, 4 September 2023 22:59 (seven months ago) link

I find her extremely likeable and from what I’ve heard so far this has potential to be my favorite thing she has released. A Janet Jackson collab would make so much sense btw.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 05:06 (seven months ago) link

Yeah I've liked everything I've heard from this a lot; the only thing possibly dampening my enthusiasm is the Body Talk / Petals For Armor / Last Year Was Weird-style rollout

monotony, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 06:59 (seven months ago) link

i almost forgot this was out today. looking at the credits and vladislav delay produced one track?!

ufo, Friday, 8 September 2023 07:41 (seven months ago) link

i want a 20 minute version of "treason"

ufo, Friday, 8 September 2023 08:29 (seven months ago) link

please give us some meditative reich&b epics

ufo, Friday, 8 September 2023 08:31 (seven months ago) link

half of this is her best ever work and the rest is still pretty good. "gravity" is heavenly, really delighted that this sort of 2-step has been a bit of a trend this year

i just wish this were a full album but it's a great EP

ufo, Friday, 8 September 2023 08:58 (seven months ago) link

Do only artists who pay Spotify get on Release Radar? I’ve been listening to a lot of Tinashe this year and no track from this release on my radar - which is bullshit.

Anyways, yeah great mini album. “Gravity” is gorgeous, “talk to me” switch still a favorite, “none of my business” also sounded good on first listen.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 September 2023 14:39 (seven months ago) link

“Gravity” is the one produced by machinedrum and vladislav delay

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 September 2023 14:40 (seven months ago) link

machinedrum produced a few more too including "treason" which is just incredible

ufo, Friday, 8 September 2023 14:41 (seven months ago) link

Yeah opening and closing tracks are machinedrum iirc

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 September 2023 14:42 (seven months ago) link

Treason might be her best opening track yet. Impressed how she continues to evolve and do her thing after 10 albums. Really consistent and diverse discography.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 September 2023 14:49 (seven months ago) link

I like "Tightrope" the best

Sir Mick explained: (morrisp), Friday, 8 September 2023 17:38 (seven months ago) link

sorta like amethyst in that album or EP or whatever it immediately strikes me as one of the best things she's put out

ivy., Friday, 8 September 2023 18:43 (seven months ago) link

On my third listen. The brevity helps in retrospective… lots of replay value and every song in here is great

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 September 2023 19:34 (seven months ago) link

Recency bias maybe but this is my favorite thing she has released

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 8 September 2023 19:35 (seven months ago) link

Keys on Treason are vaguely reminiscent of a mbira, love them.
Talk To Me Nice is this perfect labyrinthine anti-jam.
Needs is okay, don't mind it.
I'm not sure the production totally works on Uh Huh but falsetto = good, interesting song.
Gravity a little synth-drenched and known territory for her.
None of my business needs a little more kick.
Tightrope good minimal song.

Really good but hard to compare to 333 as only a half album.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 09:32 (seven months ago) link

I rarely follow him but apparently Fantano gave this one a better ranking than p4k and loves it - with the exception of gravity which I don’t get but whatever.

Certainly suits her style, cool re-use of the electronic mbira from Treason. I'm not crazy about the dnb return in style, it's always a little overpowering.

this thread is a great reminder to dig into the Tinashe catalog, i was unnaturally harsh on her sophomore vibes, i think aquarius was more than my brain could handle and i folded before her career even began lol oops :/
