O Albany -- isn't the governance of New York as corrupt and unresponsive as any other state's?

So Cuomo bankrolled this Women's Equality Party solely to drain votes from the WFP and maybe get them off the ballot for good, as far as i can tell. AND THEY STILL ENDORSED HIM! "Please hit me on the head with a 2x4 again, governor." Green Green Green.

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 November 2014 12:27 (nine years ago) link

He played the "WEP" card well after the endorsement though, and if they withdrew their endorsement or violated the terms of the agreement by appearing unsupportive of Reptile Face, he could retract his commitment to pass the Women's Equality Agenda, the NYS DREAM Act, raise the minimum wage, etc, AND bring the IDC back. The WFP leadership weighed how many people's lives that would change and decided if they could hold him accountable to those commitments it would be worth it.

Basically now that he agreed to all those progressive issues he's trying to break them so they CAN'T hold him accountable, ie having his cake for free and ordering a hit on the baker he ordered it from.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 3 November 2014 16:34 (nine years ago) link

yeah I know it was after. Withdrawal of the endorsement would be the honorable way out.

Celeb enthusiasts about the "WEP" are the usual gang of tourists, oh hello Lena Dunham.

Ugh unfortunately I live right on the edge of Cornegy's council district and while my own city council person is terrible, I'm glad she's just crazy and not "centrist" or whatever Cornegy thinks he is. He's publicly supporting BOTH the WEP **and** Prop 1. Why why why why

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 3 November 2014 17:29 (nine years ago) link

If anyone can defend a No vote on ballot proposals 2 and 3, i'm all ears. (All I can detect: legislators won't read electronic bills; the tech money is better spent elsewhere on schools, and only public ones.)

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 November 2014 18:20 (nine years ago) link

I think Prop 2 is just a bit of house keeping, something about how the countdown for how long they have to read a proposed bill before it comes to a vote will start from when the email is sent instead of when paper copies are distro'ed. Will prob result in legislators assigning a staffer to print it out for them as soon as the email comes through and that's assuming anyone was reading proposed legislation anyway.

A frustrated labor union source said that in the end, Cuomo is just being Cuomo.

“The mayor arranged a forced marriage between the base and him,” said the union source, who has helped with the Democratic effort to win the Senate. “This is what happens when you get into an arranged marriage. It doesn’t always work out.”

I would be delighted if the Greens outpolled the WFP, not sure it's gonna happen.

My state senator is this unopposed asshole

so I wrote in myself.

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 17:17 (nine years ago) link

Cuomo's statewide total from last night is currently 52.78%, lol

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 19:17 (nine years ago) link

5% for Hawkins, I guess that's something

Nhex, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 19:21 (nine years ago) link

Slightly more than Working Families and "Women's Equality Party" combined.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 19:44 (nine years ago) link

since they're both effectively the Dem ticket it's probably not an accurate comparison

Nhex, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 19:57 (nine years ago) link

well State Senate solidly back in Republican hands, they don't even need scumbag "Democrat" Felder anymore.

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 19:59 (nine years ago) link

ie excellent crutch for Cuomo, another WFP negotiating triumph.

― Nhex, Wednesday, November 5, 2014 2:57 PM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

That's actually why it's marginally meaningful, because Working Families is supposed to be this *insider progressive* party that works with the dems to make sure progressive issues get pushed (or just uses false promises to keep progressives from defecting away from the dems entirely, depending on how you look at it).

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 20:05 (nine years ago) link

I mean with Cuomo winning 52-39, it's not of enormous significance, but in a closer D-R race, the number of progressives who vote for the dem on the Working Families line vs vote for a third party candidate could make the difference.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

Cuomo's raw vote total is the lowest for a NY gov winner since FDR in 1930. (When we had a lot less people, if more voters.)

Wayne Barrett, who wrote fine muckraking columns for the Voice when it was a newspaper, on Dean Skelos et al:

With all the focus on Shelly Silver and his Assembly apparatchiks, let’s not forget New York’s state Senate, where four of the last five majority leaders have been indicted and the fifth, Dean Skelos, is reportedly under investigation....

The swamp is so deeply bi-partisan that Democrat (Malcolm) Smith was bribing Republican county leaders to get the Republican line, Democrat (Pedro) Espada was initially installed as leader by Republicans, and (Joe) Bruno, who claimed years ago that Silver’s outside income inspired his own consulting career, just derided Silver’s prosecutors as “out of control.”

...It is comforting to note that local comedian Al Sharpton hosted new speaker Heastie at his National Action Network over the weekend and declared that any attempt to change the three-men-in-a-room nirvana in Albany would now be seen as racist. Along with a prayer blessing for Heastie, Sharpton issued a threat: “If you mess with Carl, you’re messing with us.”

“Don’t talk about breaking up the trio now. We just got into the trio,” Sharpton said, forgetting that Smith, Sampson and ex-governor David Paterson were recently part of the three, actually outnumbering white men at one point. It’s hard to believe Sharpton might’ve forgotten Paterson, Smith and (John) Sampson, since all were involved with him in the Aqueduct scandal, with Sharpton collecting $100,000 in NAN contributions from bidders on the $3 billion, 30-year racino contract, the richest in state history.

We haven’t heard from the Greeks yet about what they will do if they lose their man in the room, Dean Skelos, the state senator from Rockville Centre in Long Island who succeeded Bruno. Hemlock is always an option. Jonathan Dienst, the Emmy-Award winning WNBC reporter who broke the Skelos story, says Bharara is investigating the majority leader’s ties to the real estate industry....

Andrew Cuomo has now officially decided not to call special elections in time for newly elected Senators (likely Democrats) to be part of the 2018 budget.

That means he has chosen to maintain a Republican veto over all New York legislation. 1/
