I know last week I was complaining about all the game-playing but compared to the whole "interviews with P4k" thing I'm not so sure. :-/

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Monday, 25 August 2014 19:10 (nine years ago) link

he's leaving his son's bandcamp page a mystery for us to sort out, at least

Is this his first interview or

a spectrum is taunting ur OP (wins), Monday, 25 August 2014 19:16 (nine years ago) link

Well, I remember interviews from a long time ago.

Maybe it's the only way to throw off the concrete cast of those fans that think they know him and his music better than he does.

(And that does not include anyone that has posted here, before anyone misunderstands )

Mark G, Monday, 25 August 2014 19:47 (nine years ago) link

he's done maybe 2 or 3 interviews in the past 10 years, and those he has done have been mostly by email. It's just weird seeing him do 2 big conversation interviews so close together.

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Monday, 25 August 2014 19:58 (nine years ago) link

On Kanye sampling Drukqs’ “Avril 14th” on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’s “Blame Game”: “Is it a sample? I actually don't know what it ended up being in the end, I'm so slack. I know that he tried to fucking rip me off and claim that he'd written it, and they tried to get away with not paying. I was really helpful, and when they first sent it to me, I was like, ‘Oh, I can re-do that for you, if you like,’ because they'd sampled it really badly and time-stretched it and there was loads of artifacts. I was like, ‘I'll just replay it for you at that speed if you want.’ And they totally didn't even say ‘hello’ or ‘thanks,’ they just replied with, ‘It's not yours, it's ours, and we're not even asking you any more.’” [laughs]

this is awesome

Karl Malone, Monday, 25 August 2014 20:02 (nine years ago) link

Yeah.

Personally, that's what I want more of.

Your mileage, as ever...

Mark G, Monday, 25 August 2014 20:21 (nine years ago) link

right I mean outside of those Analord releases and Rushup Edge he's been kind of a non-presence these last 13 years, I don't mind him talking - those few interviews he's done have been great

Maggie killed Quagmire (collest baby ever) (frogbs), Monday, 25 August 2014 20:44 (nine years ago) link

Yeah it's pretty weird, all this niceness after reading stuff like 'I hate the public' for years. Unless ... unless he has been replaced and all these interviews are with a stand-in a la Kaufman

Brakhage, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 01:56 (nine years ago) link

Maybe I should just ban myself from posting to this thread or even reading his interviews until the record is out because I am so used to viewing Richard D James as a puzzle to be solved or an arcane mystery to be pieced together that I just can't handle seeing him as a product to be marketed.

I can sympathise with this as it's similar to how I felt when BoC released Campfire Headphase.

Yeah this pretty much gets to the nub of my weirdness.

"Stay away! Stay away! Oh wait, I've got an album out, come'ere."

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 09:57 (nine years ago) link

I remember seeing ppl complain about Chris Morris doing "straight" interviews for Nathan Barley and Four Lions, after a whole career of just fucking with ppl. Didn't ruin anything for me but I get it I guess

a spectrum is taunting ur OP (wins), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 10:04 (nine years ago) link

It's not even about "straight interviews" vs "just fucking with people" it's more about a decade of "I hate the public, fuck the public, I'm not talking to the public, I can't be arsed with the public, fuck interviews, fuck the public - OOH I'VE GOT A NEW RECORD OUT - here is a massive, friendly, chatty interview with Pitchfork."

It's not even that I dislike the latter, it's just kind of a shock after so long of the former.

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 10:40 (nine years ago) link

if it's any consolation, it's hard to imagine RDJ being pushed into doing promo. i wd assume he's doing it cos he wants to but then there's that thing you said about alimony so hmmmm

Daphnis Celesta, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 10:44 (nine years ago) link

Also, people (and the world at large) change. It might be interesting to see whether he's still as up for 'pranks' and scatological humour as before or whether the last decade has given him an alternative perspective on his public persona.

best thing about this album (other than the music as i cannot comment on that) is that this is the largest profile release that tDR have been involved with for a long time.

hopefully it helps push ian into restarting tDR properly.

mark e, Friday, 29 August 2014 16:08 (nine years ago) link

Really hope the London event takes place in a club or somewhere else with an amazing soundsystem rather than the shitty record shop where it will probably occur.

Matt DC, Friday, 29 August 2014 18:26 (nine years ago) link

It'll probably be in a Claus Olssen branch.

Guess it's somewhat expected for the quid you're extracting for it

octobeard, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 07:56 (nine years ago) link

Love this. Also it only occurred to me after a talking with my partner last night that the sole intention behind releasing those track titles, BPMs and run times was to encourage loads of bootlegs and rub obsessive fans up the wrong way. Same as this deluxe edition and the Caustic Window album - this is good music, but it's not worth £200-£46,000.

New interview: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/aphex-twin-on-new-syro-lp-im-feeling-really-horny-about-it-and-very-smug-20140903#ixzz3CH2dlUjr

Yeah, I've got this brand spanking new Swedish digital-analog hybrid drum machine-sampler-synthesizer. It's fucking good. Pretty much everything I do has to be somehow related to making music – when I came up to London to do press, I thought, "Oh, I can go on the train and make some music on the way up." But then on the train, I didn't have any power sockets to plug anything into, so that didn't work out so good. I'm going to make sure that they have sockets in the one on the way back.

Since when did Richard become so adorable? This interview is quite open and earnest (it would seem). Also, did he just buy an OP-1? Sounds like it from his description.

octobeard, Thursday, 4 September 2014 08:45 (nine years ago) link

I thought it might have been that new Elektron drum machine, but that sounds plausible

JLB Credit (Jack BS), Thursday, 4 September 2014 09:07 (nine years ago) link

He still lies his head off. Basically contradicted a ton of stuff he said in other interviews over the past couple of years. (Then again, given those were supposed to be email interviews, it's entirely possible they weren't him?)

He sounds pretty happy, which is good.

How many kids do you have?
Two boys, eight and six. They make music, both of them. I don't know if you've ever heard of an artist called Mark Fell – it's avant-garde techno, not danceable. Someone said [my son's music] sounds like a cross between that and Holly Herndon, who's another experimental electronic artist. That's really accurate, actually. He was five when he did it.

lol, so proud
