"Due to the labour-intensive hand-crafted print process, this edition is strictly limited to 200 copies."

koogs, Thursday, 21 August 2014 16:22 (nine years ago) link

Each limited box set includes a sealed jar that contains air particulates from the smelting of 1/200th of the world's last remaining ores in a giant, limited edition bonfire created just for your box set.

If there are only 200, they could have charged way more then $400. But I guess $80,000 up front goes a long way to paying the alimony, huh.

Expect at least 50 of those boxes on ebay in the weeks after having been sent out, fetching double or even triple the cost price.

That press release..

Way back when, I wrote a Jesus & Mary Chain article for Record Collector magazine.'While editing/revising the final version (which unbeknownst to me was a waste of time as the mag had already readied a previous draft for publication with some mistakes left in and a bunch of new ones added but never mind time to close the bracket) I ran it through a thesaurus, and went through replacing random words (e.g. "The Jesus plus Mary Manacle" by Frank Cement)

Anyway, the point being: it reads a lot like that press release.

Mark G, Thursday, 21 August 2014 20:59 (nine years ago) link

Reads like it was run through translation twice. Plus some jokes.

dan selzer, Thursday, 21 August 2014 21:06 (nine years ago) link

several angry professionals bandying it about online; i think they missed the joke

Xpost yeah, more than likely.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 August 2014 16:01 (nine years ago) link

I'm pretty sure he passed the real press release into chinese or something in Google translator and back into English and decided it was more awesome that way.

Moka, Friday, 22 August 2014 18:39 (nine years ago) link

uhh it's pretty obviously composed tbh

mattresslessness, Friday, 22 August 2014 18:41 (nine years ago) link

maybe translate helped

regret these posts immensely

mattresslessness, Friday, 22 August 2014 18:43 (nine years ago) link

yeah the google translate thing was my first impression but a lot of this is clearly meant to be funny

Maggie killed Quagmire (collest baby ever) (frogbs), Friday, 22 August 2014 18:44 (nine years ago) link

I think Dan got it right. He translated it back and forth and then added some jokes.

In June 2014, Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit stated "Cliffs" off of Selected Ambient Works II is the song he would listen to for the rest of his life - if he had to pick one.[61]

rushomancy, Saturday, 23 August 2014 00:25 (nine years ago) link

this is a little strange, having spent however many hours playing the analord eps and the 90s shit over the last years, since i have scarcely thought about the author of all of that sublime music, so it's almost like being reaquainted with him and his mischievous yokel humour via the usual pr breadcrumb trail

he resembles a slightly more rustic andré villas-boas these days

That's a very old picture. He shaved his head in 2008, maybe 2007? He is back to looking more like himself again recently:

I listened to the Caustic Window LP for the first time yesterday and kind of instantly loved it, it was so familiar, so comfortingly weird, which obviously wouldn't have been the effect had it actually been released at the time. 'Squidge In The Fridge' is glorious.

Aphex Twin is really nice in interviews. Apparently.

I'm not sure I can deal with a world where Aphex Twin does promotional press and even Pitchfork interviews like a normal artist with a record out, instead of disinformation and counter-claims and fake stuff leaked over the web...

http://pitchfork.com/news/56459-aphex-twin-speaks-on-his-new-album-being-sampled-by-kanye-more/

re: Caustic Window

I've got thousands more like that at home. I should release all that stuff as well.

sleeve, Monday, 25 August 2014 18:50 (nine years ago) link

I don't think Mr Twin realises that the sheer obscurity/inaccessibility of the stuff was a huge part of why that kickstarter blew up so big. :-/

Maybe I should just ban myself from posting to this thread or even reading his interviews until the record is out because I am so used to viewing Richard D James as a puzzle to be solved or an arcane mystery to be pieced together that I just can't handle seeing him as a product to be marketed.

a spectrum is taunting ur OP (wins), Monday, 25 August 2014 19:16 (nine years ago) link

Well, I remember interviews from a long time ago.

Maybe it's the only way to throw off the concrete cast of those fans that think they know him and his music better than he does.

(And that does not include anyone that has posted here, before anyone misunderstands )

Mark G, Monday, 25 August 2014 19:47 (nine years ago) link

he's done maybe 2 or 3 interviews in the past 10 years, and those he has done have been mostly by email. It's just weird seeing him do 2 big conversation interviews so close together.

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Monday, 25 August 2014 19:58 (nine years ago) link

On Kanye sampling Drukqs’ “Avril 14th” on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’s “Blame Game”: “Is it a sample? I actually don't know what it ended up being in the end, I'm so slack. I know that he tried to fucking rip me off and claim that he'd written it, and they tried to get away with not paying. I was really helpful, and when they first sent it to me, I was like, ‘Oh, I can re-do that for you, if you like,’ because they'd sampled it really badly and time-stretched it and there was loads of artifacts. I was like, ‘I'll just replay it for you at that speed if you want.’ And they totally didn't even say ‘hello’ or ‘thanks,’ they just replied with, ‘It's not yours, it's ours, and we're not even asking you any more.’” [laughs]

this is awesome

Karl Malone, Monday, 25 August 2014 20:02 (nine years ago) link

Yeah.

Personally, that's what I want more of.

Your mileage, as ever...

Mark G, Monday, 25 August 2014 20:21 (nine years ago) link

right I mean outside of those Analord releases and Rushup Edge he's been kind of a non-presence these last 13 years, I don't mind him talking - those few interviews he's done have been great

Maggie killed Quagmire (collest baby ever) (frogbs), Monday, 25 August 2014 20:44 (nine years ago) link

Yeah it's pretty weird, all this niceness after reading stuff like 'I hate the public' for years. Unless ... unless he has been replaced and all these interviews are with a stand-in a la Kaufman

I can sympathise with this as it's similar to how I felt when BoC released Campfire Headphase.

Yeah this pretty much gets to the nub of my weirdness.

"Stay away! Stay away! Oh wait, I've got an album out, come'ere."

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 09:57 (nine years ago) link

I remember seeing ppl complain about Chris Morris doing "straight" interviews for Nathan Barley and Four Lions, after a whole career of just fucking with ppl. Didn't ruin anything for me but I get it I guess

a spectrum is taunting ur OP (wins), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 10:04 (nine years ago) link

It's not even about "straight interviews" vs "just fucking with people" it's more about a decade of "I hate the public, fuck the public, I'm not talking to the public, I can't be arsed with the public, fuck interviews, fuck the public - OOH I'VE GOT A NEW RECORD OUT - here is a massive, friendly, chatty interview with Pitchfork."

It's not even that I dislike the latter, it's just kind of a shock after so long of the former.

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 10:40 (nine years ago) link

if it's any consolation, it's hard to imagine RDJ being pushed into doing promo. i wd assume he's doing it cos he wants to but then there's that thing you said about alimony so hmmmm

Daphnis Celesta, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 10:44 (nine years ago) link

Also, people (and the world at large) change. It might be interesting to see whether he's still as up for 'pranks' and scatological humour as before or whether the last decade has given him an alternative perspective on his public persona.
