people like the word genre-bending

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link

people like when you know the same David Bowie songs as them, and can make things that remind them of those Bowie songs without actually doing anything remotely as well as Bowie. that's Album Of The Year material right there.

some dude, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:58 (nine years ago) link

At this point I mostly just pretend that 45:33 is the only LCD album.

Tim F, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 22:10 (nine years ago) link

i like the DFA compilations of a decade ago, those were p cool

dark sorcerer wallenstein (Lamp), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 22:14 (nine years ago) link

also cool to see theres like a million new answers on this p4k thread and theyre about lcd soundsystem

dark sorcerer wallenstein (Lamp), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

lol

dyl, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 00:03 (nine years ago) link

LCD Soundsystem were great when no singing was involved. DFA drums!!

brimstead, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 01:21 (nine years ago) link

LCD Soundsystem were great. Of all the pitchfork champions I'd feel this is the one that would have been spared.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 01:39 (nine years ago) link

in my book every single and every album lcd ever did was beaut but now that murphy 'retired' i guess i could be nostalgic as happens when someone great is gone

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:16 (nine years ago) link

"Someone Great" is great

he seems like a normal and friendly person in this interview

btw wow if you thought the albums/tracks lists were slightly boring get ready for this http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/9482-the-50-best-music-videos-of-the-decade-so-far/ boring 2 the xxxtreme

remember some of them, "Kaputt" and "Bad Girls, but would never care to revisit

niels, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:24 (nine years ago) link

lol, yea i am totally willing to admit that i am being unfair, especially w/r/t ragging on his style and his photoshoots. i am also willing to admit that there is always some bullshit behind me or anyone else claiming that they "cannot see how ANYBODY could like artist x". i think it's more just that for taylor swift, say, i don't relate to her music and i know it's not music that's made for me, but at the same time it doesn't repulse me and i have no specific aversion to it. it's just not for me and that's fine. i basically have the same feeling towards lcd soundsystem except that his specific vocal style i just find suuuuuuuuuuuuuuper fucking grating and i so strongly do not identify with it. in general i don't have to identify w/ music in order to like it, but in lcd's case i'm just so put off by that vocal style that it's a huge reach for me to easily just be like "eh, yea, it's not my thing," it's more like "yea i fucking haaate his singing"

Kanye is #1 album of the decade!!! http://m.pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/9465-the-top-100-albums-of-2010-2014/5/

anonanon, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:29 (nine years ago) link

xp hehe, when I saw Lambchop live I had to close my eyes bc the way the lead singer did vocals was so annoying to me, can relate to how you feel http://youtu.be/vf0OuJEWRo0

Eddie Vedder (sometimes) has a similar effect on me

niels, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:32 (nine years ago) link

yea it's the worst in, say, "daft punk is playing in my house", "disco infiltrator", "north american scum", all those affectations

marcos, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:42 (nine years ago) link

what about the songs where he does more traditional singing? "All My Friends" is one of my favorites of the past decade.

odd proggy geezer (Moodles), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:07 (nine years ago) link

Can't believe there isn't a single Ciara video in that list.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:08 (nine years ago) link

the problem with "All My Friends" is that everything else about the song is fucking horrible

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:09 (nine years ago) link

kind of surprised you hate it so much, the non-vocal parts of the song don't do anything that seem obviously objectionable to me

odd proggy geezer (Moodles), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:44 (nine years ago) link

it's weird how consensus shifts around here, my memory is that vast swathes of ILM went absolutely apeshit for LCD from "I'm Losing My Edge" on

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:47 (nine years ago) link

well there are younger music nerds here now, still clinging to their edge

da croupier, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:48 (nine years ago) link

personally I don't subscribe to any cult-of-personality about Murphy and his voice definitely has its limitations (painfully revealed in that live film) but man those records are really solid. DFA will forever get a pass from me for those and the Juan Maclean.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:49 (nine years ago) link

it doesn't seem crazy to me to suggest that LCD were a key act of the 00s, "Losing My Edge" seems to encapsulate a whole bunch of stuff about that decade and its music, I would def place it pretty highly on best-of decades lists

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:50 (nine years ago) link

listened to sound of silver the other day, whether people have overrated an eno-rock party band out of self-identification is not my problem but they were a great eno-rock party band

da croupier, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:51 (nine years ago) link

like, let me have my danceable songs about getting old and lame, if i want those clearly i don't think i deserve much

da croupier, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:52 (nine years ago) link

did M83 make any of these lists? i was listening to them yesterday. would rather m83 than lcd.

scott seward, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:56 (nine years ago) link

that midnight city song

Think we should give him a pass for the vocals in that live film considering it was the fifth night in a row he did a 3 hour gig.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

nobody made him do that, you get paid AND a pass

da croupier, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:59 (nine years ago) link

sorry - you don't get paid and a pass

da croupier, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:00 (nine years ago) link

Well it wasn't originally planned to be that many is my point.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:00 (nine years ago) link

ok i'm listening to "Losing My Edge" for the second time in my life

example (crüt), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:01 (nine years ago) link

well filming the concert was planned, so maybe they should have planned better

da croupier, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:01 (nine years ago) link

They hastily adding gigs for a farewell concert that turned into a weeklong thing for fans who couldn't get tickets once all the concert/film wheels were in motion. Sacrificing posterity for the present day fans seems like a pretty sweet move imo.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:04 (nine years ago) link

this song isn't as good as the nurse with wound bonus track where david tibet reads the nurse with wound list

dude they could have done shows after, far earlier etc etc - it could have been avoided. i was at one of the terminal 5 shows and loved it. but they made the choice to capture him romantically giving his last gasps of air rather than singing at his best.

da croupier, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:10 (nine years ago) link

yeah i remember excitedly torrenting the last msg show excitedly and then finally listening and being totally underwhelmed by it

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:14 (nine years ago) link

excitedly

having looked at all 2 million of the albums on the best album list i keep thinking that the cumulative effect is much worse than any of the specific albums listed cuz i like a bunch of these havent heard more and indifferent to the rest. i can only spot like three albums i think are really bad although there are a few i kindof assume suck but have never bothered with. but as a whole it feels p culturally illiterate and out-of-touch like in my memory these lists tend to be pretty interesting as statements about 'what we think of music now' but i guess because its about 'music now' basically anyway its not that exciting. idk this is a list of records thats almost as someone-who-works-in-advertising as the user-generated list of a few years ago except it has beyoncé on it

also i really like that second M83 cd a lot and would put it pretty high on 00s list

dark sorcerer wallenstein (Lamp), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:16 (nine years ago) link

Hurry Up We're Dreaming showed up at 22 as well.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:19 (nine years ago) link

That album was too yelpy and melodramatic for me. I liked the whisper-vocals against building crescendo dynamic of the early albums much better. Seemed more measured.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:55 (nine years ago) link

i really like their videos too. would buy an M83 video comp. i find if i listen to a few songs at a time they sound great. whole albums can be a bit much. too rich or something. i like their "vision" though.

scott seward, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 17:59 (nine years ago) link

Hurry Up We're Dreaming was a jump off a cliff in terms of quality imo

dem bow dem bow need calcium (seandalai), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 18:19 (nine years ago) link

haven't heard a double album in a while that was more needlessly double

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 18:26 (nine years ago) link

i think i like m83 but they give me major Pentacostal/Charismatic vibes (yes i know they're from France)

brimstead, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 22:28 (nine years ago) link

At some point (I can't remember which albums it happened between) M83 went from a 2+ person collaborative affair to an unchecked solo project.

Bittersweet pleasure that a story about two jilted 'mos live-tweeting The Little Mermaid got more pick-up than Pitchfork's fuck-all-queers lists
