it's either trolling or the most absurd attempt at music-related conversation i've probably ever seen to assert that liking one artist in the pop music universe means you can't like an indie darling band, or vice versa. and this is coming from someone with little more than mild appreciation for both, at best.

Katherine-I really liked those 'my year in music' pieces, thanks for posting. especially the 'An Old Album I Discovered/Rediscovered This Year' part.

yw -- I'm not sure on this but I think the format was mostly lindsay's idea? (speaking of good pitchfork people, though technically she's not there anymore)

katherine, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 17:57 (nine years ago) link

i don't get taylor swift but i can easily see why people like her. i don't get lcd soundsytem and i have a hard time understanding why people like him

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:05 (nine years ago) link

but he seems nice right? i've never seen anything bad abt him i guess

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:05 (nine years ago) link

eh, he was seemed like a smug asshole. i have nothing to base that on except photos of him. i think it's singing style too, it's so obnoxious. it has that cocky swagger that associate with a lot of new york punk

marcos, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:09 (nine years ago) link

actually i don't know if its new york punk because i really don't know much about new york punk it his voice is just really obnoxious

marcos, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:10 (nine years ago) link

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

in the documentary he pretty much just seemed to walk around in bathrobe and drink coffee and walk his little dog

i like LCD soundsystem just fine, i don't feel strongly abt them...as far as popular rock bands go you could do a hell of a lot worse i guess

p4k's lists never have anything surprising in them whatsoever, it's always the same shit they called bnm at the time of premiere + some pazz & jop 'hits' that they missed the first time around b/c they somehow forgot ("call your girlfriend") or never deigned to cover that artist at the time ("teenage dream").

are any of these blurbz worth reading, i shan't be sifting thru

this is just weird. people probably like LCD and TS for similar reasons: some combination of music, packaging, culture and personality. you don't like james murphy, fine whatever - doesn't make it so incredibly ~mysterious~ that other people do.

those two artists both have pretty obvious appeals, though what i don't understand re: LCDS is how few people think there's a huge gap in quality between his dance singles and rock albums

lex pretend, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:26 (nine years ago) link

though what i don't understand re: LCDS is how few people think there's a huge gap in quality between his dance singles and rock albums

Which of their songs are "dance," and which ones are "rock"? Or do you just mean the singles released before the first album?

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:38 (nine years ago) link

yes i mean those singles don't bother getting all "but what is genre anyway" on me

lex pretend, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

that's precisely one of the appeal.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link

people like the word genre-bending

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link

people like when you know the same David Bowie songs as them, and can make things that remind them of those Bowie songs without actually doing anything remotely as well as Bowie. that's Album Of The Year material right there.

some dude, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:58 (nine years ago) link

At this point I mostly just pretend that 45:33 is the only LCD album.

LCD Soundsystem were great when no singing was involved. DFA drums!!

brimstead, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 01:21 (nine years ago) link

LCD Soundsystem were great. Of all the pitchfork champions I'd feel this is the one that would have been spared.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 01:39 (nine years ago) link

in my book every single and every album lcd ever did was beaut but now that murphy 'retired' i guess i could be nostalgic as happens when someone great is gone

btw wow if you thought the albums/tracks lists were slightly boring get ready for this http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/9482-the-50-best-music-videos-of-the-decade-so-far/ boring 2 the xxxtreme

remember some of them, "Kaputt" and "Bad Girls, but would never care to revisit

niels, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:24 (nine years ago) link

lol, yea i am totally willing to admit that i am being unfair, especially w/r/t ragging on his style and his photoshoots. i am also willing to admit that there is always some bullshit behind me or anyone else claiming that they "cannot see how ANYBODY could like artist x". i think it's more just that for taylor swift, say, i don't relate to her music and i know it's not music that's made for me, but at the same time it doesn't repulse me and i have no specific aversion to it. it's just not for me and that's fine. i basically have the same feeling towards lcd soundsystem except that his specific vocal style i just find suuuuuuuuuuuuuuper fucking grating and i so strongly do not identify with it. in general i don't have to identify w/ music in order to like it, but in lcd's case i'm just so put off by that vocal style that it's a huge reach for me to easily just be like "eh, yea, it's not my thing," it's more like "yea i fucking haaate his singing"

xp hehe, when I saw Lambchop live I had to close my eyes bc the way the lead singer did vocals was so annoying to me, can relate to how you feel http://youtu.be/vf0OuJEWRo0

Eddie Vedder (sometimes) has a similar effect on me
