I didn't know it could keep track of what was played on an ipod.

Yep. Apparently earlier versions of the plug-in didn't, but mine has worked for at least the last six months or so. There are a couple of problems - iPods apparently only count "played" or "not played," so if you listen to that Wonder Stuff track six times in a row on your iPod, it will only get scrobbled once. Also you have to be careful about synching it up: if you listen to your iPod, then listen on your computer and only at that point sync up, the plug-in "sees" the iPod's times as an error (because it's already submitted tracks listened to AFTER the iPod tracks). But basically, it works.

I'm glad to see people are still using this - about half of this thread seems to be people who have had problems and couldn't be arsed to fix them.

Last FM always says to tag files with Musicbrainz. But i've never used it so I don't know how useful it is.
The tagger is use is here http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html and it's free.

Does anyone know how to adjust the obscurity of the artists that play?
I saw a graph/slider arrangement at some point that adjusts between more popular more obscure but I can't fins it now and I've looked everywhere.

mei (mei), Thursday, 15 June 2006 12:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Isn't the slider just for recommendations?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

whaddaya think? awful busy, at first glance.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I didn't like it at 1st. I'm still not sure. It's certainly a bit cluttered. I would far rather they got the site working properly and charts updating like they're meant to than farting about with changes.
Mine hasnt updated since 19th. It used to be daily. But even though it says the 19th it hasnt updated since before that. Nothing changed when it supposedly updated. I hope they haven't lost all the data.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:27 (seventeen years ago) link

It doesn't actually seem that much different, just more glossy graphics! To be honest I liked the plain, non-candybar graphics better. Any new features that I should be on the lookout for?

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

http://beta.last.fm/dashboard/ is new.
http://beta.last.fm/user/"insert user name"/charts/ has changed

Album pics seemed to have appeared. Even beside recent tracks played. I quite like that.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:42 (seventeen years ago) link

The radio is meant to have changed too. I've not checked that out yet.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Album pics seemed to have appeared.

They hired someone, well, I don't know how long ago, who's been doing a lot of updating, primarily by linking in catalog data from Amazon. The album pics are the upside. The downside is that a lot of artists now show two separate versions of the same album (one acquired via musicbrainz, one via amazon), and about half of those albums now seem to have no tracks. Bugs the sh!t out of me, but I understand they're doing it to generate revenue, so people have more options to buy things with just one click.

If you haven't used Pandora recently, check it out - they did a big update this week, too. I wrote about some of it in my journalhere.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Friday, 23 June 2006 21:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Pandora?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 23 June 2006 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

http://www.pandora.com, it's another "music discovery engine." It's been written about quite a bit in different places (including here on ILx) but the basic idea is that they have people identify characteristics in songs - say, "mixed acoustic/electric instrumentation" or "minor key melodies" -- and then based on a song or artist you give them, stream a series of songs with similar characteristics. Quite neat.

An entreprising programmer has set up a proxy at http://pandorafm.real-ity.com, which allows you to record what you listen to on Pandora onto your last.fm profile. I go through it usually.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Friday, 23 June 2006 22:16 (seventeen years ago) link

this is really cool. i suppose i may be somewhat insane for being concerned that the songs i play on pandora aren't being recorded on my profile, but this will make me feel a lot better about my work listening when i forget to bring my ipod in.

Hmmm... It seems to be posting some random songs that I've never heard of. Thanks LastFM!

Either I did something wrong or LastFM is completely screwed up. I guess it doesn't matter because it only seems to update my currently playing list about once a year.
