as Pitchfork haemorrhages readers

is this really happening?

dead man walking: http://www.spin.com/articles/all-333-phish-songs-ranked/

kidding aside, it's an interest question in light of the big BuzzFeed news.

yea how is p4k's readership? they seem bigger and more established than ever

marcos, Monday, 18 August 2014 20:13 (nine years ago) link

They're a bigger brand but it seems like they have less direct influence re: breaking any artist or band.

What's the big buzzfeed news? Xp

, Monday, 18 August 2014 20:15 (nine years ago) link

You know one of these things in isolation seems like just another tech deal, but viewed as a whole, I think it speaks to the ongoing rapid changes in content
1. Big time Silicon Valley VC making a $50 million investment, http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/11/technology/a-move-to-go-beyond-lists-for-content-at-buzzfeed.html
2. Apple acquisition of Beats
3. Move to curated music for the streaming services (this is probably most significant in terms of Pitchfork, and thus the tie-up with Beats). excellent piece from the wsj: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304256404579449163704994966

As opposed to when?

Evan, Monday, 18 August 2014 20:41 (nine years ago) link

Already, most of BuzzFeed’s revenue is derived from BuzzFeed Creative, the company’s 75-person unit dedicated to creating for brands custom video and list-style advertising content that looks similar to its own editorial content.

ugh

Before six out of every ten people on the internet had his/her own music blog.

Everyone's a closet ned. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 18 August 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

So a higher quantity of blogs weigh into people's decisions more now? Or do you mean bloggers are less likely to follow masses because they want to pride themselves tastemakers with unique opinions?

Evan, Monday, 18 August 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

...and almost everyone is a blogger so there is less mass hype merely based on pitchfork's perspective on a given artist?

Evan, Monday, 18 August 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

marcos, Monday, 18 August 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

Well, I don't know if that's really the result though. Certain BNM albums fall through the cracks (but it's always been that way), and certain BNM albums explode (but it's always been that way). I'm not sure if there ability to break artists is measurably worse than it's ever been.

obv its their prerogative to cover whatever they choose (and i've benefited tremendously from their attn throughout the years), but a lot of the folks on this list are straight up 'pop' artists who won't notice the honor of being included on this list one way or the other.

Albums list skews incredibly North American, like there's only two or three artists in the top 30 from outside the US and Canada, and not many more in the overall 100.

The Halcyon Digest thing across both lists reminds me when I rediscover an old album and am overly excited about it for about a month then it fades away again- like they all happened to have put it back on their ipods recently.

Evan, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 13:39 (nine years ago) link

Bon Iver's now been bested by 2011 albums from Bill Callahan, St Vincent, M83, Destroyer, and Drake.
