why bad optics?

horseshoe, Friday, 15 August 2014 22:48 (nine years ago) link

haha, def thought of that flick.

I love em personally but ain't had a good one in years. they make em so shitty at the restaurants here. last one overloaded the alcohol, one prior overloaded the sugar. and then there are the places that make it w/ sprite.

Neanderthal, Friday, 15 August 2014 22:50 (nine years ago) link

yeah you have to make them at home. they are the best, though.

horseshoe, Friday, 15 August 2014 22:50 (nine years ago) link

idk, i have a very hard time saying the word 'mojito' w/out feeling like an idiot. something about drawing my cheeks back from the 'mo' to make the 'he' sound.

Mordy, Friday, 15 August 2014 22:50 (nine years ago) link

i guess if i made them at home i wouldn't have to say anything, i could call it whatever i want

Mordy, Friday, 15 August 2014 22:51 (nine years ago) link

i should try just tryin to make em here. we have a shaker cos my bro used to bartend.

Neanderthal, Friday, 15 August 2014 22:51 (nine years ago) link

i get really drunk when i make them at home, so i haven't in a while. i should before school starts back up again. they are beautiful, also. you have to put a long sprig of mint in there so it looks like a tree is growing out of your glass.

horseshoe, Friday, 15 August 2014 22:52 (nine years ago) link

the work-intensive part is the muddling of limes and mint and sugar but if you can commit it is delicious. also, paging Soto.

horseshoe, Friday, 15 August 2014 22:52 (nine years ago) link

also my boyfriend hates mint because he is terrible so if i make them at home i have to drink them all.

I don't like ordering labor intensive drinks because I got death-stared by a bartender once while he was muddling my drink. Very aggressive. Worried he was going to cave my skull in with his muddling stick.

I don't like making labor intensive drinks either, because I am lazy.

Voted no.

Ryan, Friday, 15 August 2014 23:14 (nine years ago) link

the bartender doesn't need to be happy about making your drink. however, you can order whatever you want. this is the way of things.

Ryan, Friday, 15 August 2014 23:30 (nine years ago) link

Mojitos are great, though I understand why bartenders hate you for ordering one if they are swamped. Not that they are hard to make, but they are hard to just whip up. You have to spend all of two minutes, vs. 30 seconds. However, they are one of the few cocktails that adapt well to pitchers.

Nice alternative is the Southside: http://imbibemagazine.com/Southside-Fizz-Recipe

I don't think the caiparinha is totally comparable, because cachaca is so much funkier than standard rum, imo. No fizz, either.

true, but it's slightly more adventurous in my eyes

Frozen Mudjito

Neanderthal, Friday, 15 August 2014 23:54 (nine years ago) link

Love a good Pisco Sour. Pisco is like cachaca, a relatively exotic rum alternative with afaik one real drink use.

Usually lemon or lime juice means shake, but there's really no need to shake a mojito, since you pour over ice and top with fizzy water later anyway. Then you give it a nice stir to distribute the sweet. But then, I use simple syrup rather than sugar - as I might in a caiparinha - so it mixes pretty easily. Straight sugar might require a shake.

Mojitos: totally classic and fun to make. Does take some effort, but worth it. I only order them at bars that seem like they know what they're doing, because they're easy to screw up. (Also true not a good drink to order when the bar's slammed.)

Only downside is trying to make them last more than 5 minutes.

this is an excellent post

call all destroyer, Saturday, 16 August 2014 00:57 (nine years ago) link

also you don't need a shaker to make a mojito, you just need to pass it back and forth between two glasses. just make sure your seltzer is in the fridge, not room temp.

A good mojito is defo my favourite standard cocktail - a good one is fairly hard to come by though.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Saturday, 16 August 2014 01:00 (nine years ago) link

why do you need to pass it back and forth? i am genuinely confused about this mojito agitation

flatizza (harbl), Saturday, 16 August 2014 01:10 (nine years ago) link

well if i build the drink in a glass, my sequence would be like syrup/mint, lime, rum, seltzer. so all my syrup is on the bottom of the glass and all my seltzer is on the top. if i add my ice and then pass it back and forth with another glass i've fixed that sitch.

i guess i could stir it but with the mint and spent limes floating around in there the passing just seems easier.

I've been experimenting with making them with slightly darker rums, and it definitely changes the character. Like a lot of more tropical drinks, unfortunately, the sugar really adds up. Between the syrup and the alcohol, you may as well be drinking soda.
