No doubt some kind of object of derision for many - in the way that any guitar band is these days tends to be but I find this particular loud guitar band compelling. I am not sure I can articulate why. They seem to have sucked all the air out of their songs but still sound intense and interesting, unpredictable and likeable. Maybe it's the haircuts that have captured my heart.

Yeah they are good.

Still,somewhat underdeveloped.

nostormo, Thursday, 7 August 2014 07:31 (nine years ago) link

Loved that last album - is the new one out yet?

Walter Galt, Thursday, 7 August 2014 09:15 (nine years ago) link

yeah, a couple days ago

not derivative at all in my opinion. it's hard to find a guitar band that sticks out these days and they definitely go for it on this new album. really thrilling stuff

hackshaw, Thursday, 7 August 2014 12:50 (nine years ago) link

I saw them a couple years ago and bought the first album on vinyl, good stuff IMO, the capture some things about Nirvana that most bands that copied Nirvana, the more odd pop hooks of Nirvana

the parts in "Lineolum Tryst" where the guitars sound like a chainsaw malfunctioning are kinda killing me right now

hackshaw, Thursday, 7 August 2014 13:36 (nine years ago) link

They dress like jr high kids in 1997

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 7 August 2014 14:50 (nine years ago) link

Huh this doesn't sound like what I expected, way poppier and catchier. I like it.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:20 (nine years ago) link

i'll give this another shot but man i don't hear what you guys are hearing.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:35 (nine years ago) link

it took me at least 7 listens for it to seep in.

now i'm gung ho about this thing though it's not exactly helping my hangover

hackshaw, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

god, they could use an albini makeover or something to give the rhythm section some presence

j., Thursday, 7 August 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

they need everything But Albini!

nostormo, Thursday, 7 August 2014 21:11 (nine years ago) link

doesn't seem as good as the 1st one so far

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 7 August 2014 21:11 (nine years ago) link

i mean do we really need yet another Albini style production?

one of this band advantages is the fact they create something NEW.

nostormo, Thursday, 7 August 2014 21:13 (nine years ago) link

title track is great

lol on hoosly (crüt), Thursday, 7 August 2014 21:14 (nine years ago) link

i just wanna be able to hear drums when a drummer is drumming them

j., Thursday, 7 August 2014 21:16 (nine years ago) link

personally, i don't hear a problem with the drum sound.

don't forget the sound has some garage elements..

nostormo, Thursday, 7 August 2014 21:19 (nine years ago) link

the Millennial brooding ties the whole thing together

bless these angry young men

hackshaw, Thursday, 7 August 2014 21:36 (nine years ago) link

i've only listened to this album once so far but i have a feeling it'll wind up pretty high on my EOY list

lol on hoosly (crüt), Thursday, 7 August 2014 21:42 (nine years ago) link

agree w/ j. in that i'd love to hear a more muscular recording. albini's big, grey, mechanical sound would probably serve the music's rhythmic attack just fine. but nostormo otm in that NP's low budget, 'verbed-out thinness helps situate them in mod garage, not so far removed from the dwyers and segalls of the world. not sure albini would be able to do anything other than iron those wrinkles out.

lol, i'm listening to "television man" and imagining it with late 70s, cars-style roy thomas baker production. sounds good! in my head i mean.

this album is great btw

Adding ease. Adding wonder. Adding (contenderizer), Thursday, 7 August 2014 22:19 (nine years ago) link

definitely more interested in a RTB rendering of this band than Albini

Television Man drum bit reminds me of this:

"olympia band" has to be one of most distinctive and durable regional sonic signatures in late 20th c rock

late 20th crock

doodle cock-up (electricsound), Thursday, 7 August 2014 22:57 (nine years ago) link

"Eon Of Pain" is fascinating

one chord drone and brooding, ok here's a pop moment!, back to brooding and ear drum rape

hackshaw, Thursday, 7 August 2014 23:02 (nine years ago) link

pop moment is specifically at 2:50 which might be the only time they ditch the skronk for a second

and it's only for a second!

hackshaw, Thursday, 7 August 2014 23:06 (nine years ago) link

xp lol, and i guess i mean early 21st crock, too

"eon of pain" is the one track that really makes me think "recording in search of a bini"

the first record felt like the same riff over and over again to me.. this one is a.. bit less like that. i think it'll take some time.

Any info about name seems obscure too drunk to internet search

Hinklepicker, Friday, 8 August 2014 05:37 (nine years ago) link

OK OK just stop right there all you hoards of internet searchers. I seem to have recovered my poise somehow and am now able to answer this crucial question. Turns out it was name made up as a 'drag name' for the lead singer and it means that he is 'interested in exploring the interior of his soul... about 'human beings exploring a new kind of abstract freedom.' This is news indeed.

still super into this.

only one i can't get behind is "Firehose Face"

hackshaw, Saturday, 9 August 2014 20:53 (nine years ago) link

^^do ppl actually listen to records he records now?

well, the stnng track's a good example of what i had in mind, in terms of the drum recording. softer that it might have been a decade or two back, but still big and mechanical, like an industrial plant churning away below the voice & guitars, with lots of kit noise to give it presence. which is a pretty natural way for drums to sound, really.

these guys have a bit of an attitude, huh?

at least the music backs it up

Amazing band. Disagree with what I said about their fashion sense in 2027. They look cool.

Eh, I think you were right about their fashion sense. And also that they're awesome.
