What a terrible song/band.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 16 November 2006 22:51 (seventeen years ago) link

you know what? the song/band ain't so bad. Harvey Danger was alright; not the greatest, but far from terrible. this song ruled alternative radio's playlist (along w/ the irritating "Rockefeller Skank") the summer it came out (1998). it was probably the last time that alternative music was fun and not-so contrived. not long after that things went bad; very bad in fact. Korn, Limp Bizkit, and all that horrible shit took over (at least here in LA on KROQ). w/ the exception of The Strokes/White Stripes explosion, things haven't been so fun since. give me Harvey Danger or Marcy Paygorund over Korn and Limp Bizkit (or Fallout Boy) any day.

LOL at the juxtaposition between this thread and the Ott vs Decemberists Girlfriend thread

I remember some review that claimed "Flagpole Sitta" was a grunge version of The Association, which is a fine way to define the genius of the track.

The Dusty Baker Selection (Charles McCain), Friday, 17 November 2006 00:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Cool lyrics too. Forgot about the masturbation ref in the first verse.

I had visions, I was in them
I was looking into the mirror,
To see a little bit clearer,
The rottenness and evil in me,
Fingertips have memories
Mine can't forget the curves of your body,
And when i feel a bit naughty,
I run it up the flagpole and see,
Who salutes(But no one ever does)

I'm not sick but I'm not well,
and I'm so hot, cause I'm in hell!

Been around the world and found
That only stupid people are breeding,
The cretins cloning and feeding,
And I don't even own a TV
Put me in the hospital for nerves
And then they had to commit me,
You told them all i was crazy,
They cut off my legs now i'm an amputee,
(God damn you)

I'm not sick but I'm not well,
And I'm so hot, cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live so well

I wanna publish zines,
And rage against machines,
I wanna pierce my tongue
It doesn't hurt, it feels fine,
The trivial sublime,
I'd like to turn off time
And kill my mind,
You kill my mind,

Paranoia paranoia!
Everybody's coming to get me,
Just say you never met me,
I'm runnin' underground with the moles,
(Digging holes)
Hear the voices in my head
I swear to God it sounds like they're snoring!
But if you're bored then you're boring,
The agony and the irony, they're killing me

I'm not sick but I'm not well
and I'm so hot cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
and it's a sin to live this well

One, two, three, four!
(Guitar Solo)

I always get this song mixed up with The New Radicals' "You Only Get What You Give", and then I'm really disappointed when the line about Beck and Hanson never comes.

pernicus (pernicus), Friday, 17 November 2006 01:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Marcy Playground??? Is it POSSIBLE to get worse than "Sex and Candy"? Coz like, Korn and LB and them, they make really really really really godawful music, but they're still (debatably) like actual songs.... "Sex and Candy" was some guy playing the laziest drum beat ever and a guy just mumbling on top of it; and somehow it got major radio airplay most likely for being about sex. And candy. Which all people love.

one year passes...

Kind of wondering if the arrival of "Peep Show" on Netflix streaming in the US will re-spark interest in this song? I don't quite know how, but I managed to *never* hear it until a few months ago. Catchy. I do remember seeing the first CD in used bins all the time, but that's it.

dlp9001, Saturday, 25 August 2012 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

the stations that played the song in the '90s still play it all the time, although people don't listen to them as much anymore.

7 years of pussy for prison riot (some dude), Saturday, 25 August 2012 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

It's really pretty decent. Dandy Warhols were both smarter and stupider at the same time, which is a neat trick to pull off. Semisonic vs. Harvey Danger? Though Semisonic's best album doesn't come out until a few years later.

dlp9001, Saturday, 25 August 2012 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

God, this is the worst song ever.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Saturday, 25 August 2012 17:45 (eleven years ago) link

it came on the radio while we were driving home like an hour ago and my wife said "i should buy this song for my ipod" and i looked at her with mild horror

some dude, Sunday, 26 August 2012 00:39 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe it depends on whether you associate the song with late 90's alt rock or with the best sitcom (apparently) in the history of the world? I dunno, but I like it...

dlp9001, Sunday, 26 August 2012 01:08 (eleven years ago) link

I like it -- the combination of nerdgoof 90s style plus loud distorted guitar and bass noise going on constantly in the background appeals to me. The lyrics might be harder to swallow if the guitars weren't so noisy, but that not being the case, this is a very cool and unique pop song.

Three Word Username, Sunday, 26 August 2012 09:53 (eleven years ago) link

Never heard it before Peep Show. Was incredibly drunk on my birthday last year and went to a US vs UK 90s night (it was awesome) and they played this and I was in such a state that I couldn't work out why they were playing the theme music to the best sitcom in the history of the world :D

kinder, Sunday, 26 August 2012 13:51 (eleven years ago) link

There's a feedback/noise solo buried during the last chorus that no one's mentioned yet... prolly my favorite part.
