In this case, France will win in 18.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:49 (nine years ago) link

feel like all 3 70s WCs were maybe better and 94 is underrated but idk, this was a good 'un

Daphnis Celesta, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:49 (nine years ago) link

This was the best WC i've seen, by quite some distance. I used to rate the Euro more.

idk if it can be the best World Cup ever if it doesn't have Ireland in it

Number None, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:52 (nine years ago) link

Best World Cup ever but pogba best young player and messi best player are completely disconnected from reality and seem like they could have been decided before a ball was kicked. Those two decisions irritate me to fuck but I'll try and not let them take the shine off things.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:52 (nine years ago) link

No seriously, if they're in the record books then it's not right.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:53 (nine years ago) link

tbf the young player award is for players 21 and under of which there can't have been many. Varane and Depay were the other names on the shortlist

Number None, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

which player under 21 has been better than Pogba?

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:55 (nine years ago) link

Varane for one.

balls, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:58 (nine years ago) link

Pogba was favorite for this before the tournament and apart from his goal had a pretty quiet one otherwise, seems like he got it just for turning up and heading one in.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:59 (nine years ago) link

The messi decision is a joke by any measurement.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:00 (nine years ago) link

And Depay xxxp

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:00 (nine years ago) link

Messi decision is NOT a joke. It is character assassination. Humiliating.

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:01 (nine years ago) link

Even Depay did more than pogba, to the point were I hope Liverpool sign him. Xp

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:04 (nine years ago) link

Hyped for Philadelphia Union against New York Red Bulls coming up in a few days :))))

, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:06 (nine years ago) link

if he signs for anyone other than uncle Louis I'll be a bit miffed

Number None, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

Pogba has been fantastic. Depay I would agree has been better. Varanne is still responsible for the german goal.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

messi dragged an ordinary but dogged team to the semis where mascherano and zabaleta played like gods.

pick out of robben, Muller, cccchhhammez or w/e but to call the messi vote a joke is a bit ridic imo

blap setter (darraghmac), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:09 (nine years ago) link

Varane's been unlucky this tournament. Depay did great but was never in the starting 11. Pogba was, scored a header too. I guess it's simple deduction. Indeed, they could've given this to Pogba on forehand.

Van Gaal and Depay are unusually tight knit, but perhaps he will stay at PSV for one more year before he goes to ManU. One can dream.

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:10 (nine years ago) link

Deems, it's not a joke to choose Messi, but surely both Muller and Robben have been way more on form in most of their matches than Messi. But Messi got to the final, which seems to be what counts.

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:12 (nine years ago) link

god knows I love Robben but in the end his contribution was about as peripheral as Messi's. Mueller perhaps suffers by dint of his team being so much stronger as a whole. i agree with Darragh that Messi's done more than nothing at this tournament but Golden Ball shd be a feeling and he hasn't produced it

How's England's bravest doing btw?

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:15 (nine years ago) link

@Daphnis, wouldn't say Robben's contribution was peripheral. He's p much been the only real class player. Without him we wouldn't have gone so far as we did.

If Robben, Messi and Muller haven't produced it, then who has?

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:17 (nine years ago) link

didn't say they hadn't produced, but maybe some years there's no "player of the tournament"??

Daphnis Celesta, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:19 (nine years ago) link

James was easily the best player in the tournament and despite being knocked out by a terrible Brazil team should've been recognized for that.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:20 (nine years ago) link

you can't give player of the tournament to someone who went out in the quarters. It's simply not done

Number None, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:20 (nine years ago) link

that's why these kind of awards are a bit daft unless there's an unarguable candidate

Daphnis Celesta, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:23 (nine years ago) link

Fifa shd adopt the TV phone-in system and just award it to whoever the most famous player in the final is oh hang on

Daphnis Celesta, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:24 (nine years ago) link

best just to give it to the most marketable player then. Now that Neymar's dead I mean

Number None, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:24 (nine years ago) link

Just as an aside I finished runner up to 'homenk' in our fantasy league, who's homenk?

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:25 (nine years ago) link

ayooooooo

ogmor, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:31 (nine years ago) link

not a bad final in the end though. very evenly matched, goal was excellent, fair enough all round. higuain can think about that chance for the rest of his life. good wc!
