yeah IK i don't want to put a positive spin on a subpar tournament performance. but there is something infuriatingly gleeful in a lot of the Messi criticism, not just at this tournament but at any moment in his career when he's less than single-handedly dominating every game he plays. i dunno if it's resentment or what exactly but there's a section of press and public that yearns to see him fail, even when his failings outweigh most players' successes

Lets all stay strong on this...Messi is the best player in the last 20 years etc. he's done more than enough, given us lots of joy, its hardly awful that he has not won it (although it is, but this is a good German side too)

Cruyff didn't. Lots of great players don't.

The Maradona-Pele-Messi debate was a silly crappy debate I don't want to see being trotted out outside of a pub. I would only compare with players within the last 20 years worth like Zidane...frankly I'm relieved we saw him in a final. It wasn't looking good after what happened four years ago and the injury hit season last year.

Russia are kinda flying under the radar World Cup-wise. God knows what they're up to

Yeah, lots of great bands haven't won the eurovision song contest either

StanM, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:29 (nine years ago) link

'slike saying of every jazz saxophonist ever either
1) he's no Coltrane
2) he sounds too much like Coltrane

my brother posted a sweet list of non-World Cup winning greats a few minutes ago, it is, of course, not much of an argument. but like i said, some people seem to love any excuse to disparage Messi.

Daphnis Celesta, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:31 (nine years ago) link

same arguments happen in NFL "can't win the big one" bullshit

Still not down with this WC ending tbh. Not cool at all. It was the best WC, the best distraction from all things. There is no refuge now. Who will deliver me from this body of death?

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:35 (nine years ago) link

think the Europa League's started

Daphnis Celesta, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:36 (nine years ago) link

i hope they bring back the arm folding in '18

mookieproof, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:36 (nine years ago) link

Hindsight being what it is, Argentina should have kept Lavezzi longer.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:37 (nine years ago) link

the Champions League has actually started too. Gibraltar had a team in for the first time

Number None, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:37 (nine years ago) link

Sabella doesn't seem to rate Lavezzi too highly. And there was the whole water bottle incident

Number None, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:38 (nine years ago) link

Lavezzi injured right?

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:39 (nine years ago) link

Next stop: Russia 2018. It just has disaster written all over it. Boring, goalless draws. Putin and a skeleton named Blatter in the stands pulling the strings. Ugh.

Tour De France?

StanM, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:41 (nine years ago) link

In this case, France will win in 18.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:49 (nine years ago) link

feel like all 3 70s WCs were maybe better and 94 is underrated but idk, this was a good 'un

Daphnis Celesta, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:49 (nine years ago) link

This was the best WC i've seen, by quite some distance. I used to rate the Euro more.
