first & last time I am confused with pablo zabaleta, still looking dazed after getting clocked by the amphibian dirk kuyt

ogmor, Thursday, 10 July 2014 00:21 (nine years ago) link

Hah I was thinking it was maybe faux-LJ

Didn't catch Zabaleta getting clocked as the power went out at 90'+1

Judging from this thread it seemed pens were tepid, glad ARG won

, Thursday, 10 July 2014 00:23 (nine years ago) link

yeah as pre-extra time power cuts go, you didn't do badly at all

serious lack of pace with argentina missing di maria & aguero looking completely unfit, relying a lot on higuain to catch out hummels/mertesacker

ogmor, Thursday, 10 July 2014 00:36 (nine years ago) link

Meh.

We were never on dis ting tonight. Argentina weren't either tbh. Deadlock. Letting Vlaar take the first penalty the only real mistake from VG. Vlaar was a beast today, flawless, and his tackling nearing perfection at times.

Watched the game with 15 friends in a 100 seats huge screen movie theatre in Amsterdam though, that was something special. Saw the Dutch games exclusively with great (new) friends in great locations, settings. Ever since trashing Spain this has been more than I'd hoped for anyhow. It's been a blast.

Rooting for Germany to win this thing, and no doubt they will.

Hehe. What can I say? They've been brilliant. This whole WC is brilliant, so much so that it way outshines us having lost. Am at total peace.

Watched the match in here, with beer and snacks on the house:

Splendid times had by all.

gbx, Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:01 (nine years ago) link

I have cheered for American athletes in the past

Number None, Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:14 (nine years ago) link

Michael Johnson was probably the last one though

Number None, Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:15 (nine years ago) link

I've cheered for Carl Lewis and Ivan Lendl my entire youth.

(after that, pretty much none tbh)

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:20 (nine years ago) link

that Vice article is pretty heartwarming

Number None, Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:23 (nine years ago) link

Ivan Lendl???

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:26 (nine years ago) link

Feel like frontrunning is part and parcel of chinese culture imo

I learned this World Cup that there really is no direct translation for 'underdog', the closest you can get is 'dark horse' which doesn't really have the punching up connotation

, Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:28 (nine years ago) link

Lendl was awes, fuiud.

Xp

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:28 (nine years ago) link

I wonder if Arsenal realised that getting a load of Germans in was the key to cracking the Chinese market

Number None, Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:29 (nine years ago) link

I heard a radio doc about China's love for Germany today. It was partly explained also because they admire a country with such discipline and (in the past) "a strong leader"...

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:31 (nine years ago) link

Lendl was awes, fuiud.

I think the point was that Lendl was Czech. But apparently he later became a US citizen. I am American and didn't know this!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:39 (nine years ago) link

Don't disagree about lendl being awesome but he was about as American as a bottle of pilsner Urquell

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:41 (nine years ago) link

He became a us citizen after he retired

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:41 (nine years ago) link

Lendl became a US citizen in '92.

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:53 (nine years ago) link

I don't think he played past '89 or '90 at least not very well. He dominated the mid 80s if I remember correctly. I always rooted for him.

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:57 (nine years ago) link

On topic, I was born in Germany but really feel like pulling for Argentina solely based on their coach's reactions on the sidelines. Should be a fantastic final

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 July 2014 02:58 (nine years ago) link

LOL Ivan Lendl

dan m, Thursday, 10 July 2014 03:41 (nine years ago) link

LBI cheered for him in the golf

groovypanda, Thursday, 10 July 2014 08:09 (nine years ago) link

Really hope Low learns the lesson of Euro '12 semi-final vs Italy and doesn't change his team around simply in an attempt to combat the opposition. Germany should play their game, it gives them a greater chance of winning than devoting all their energy into trying to play in such a way as to negate Messi.

pandemic, Thursday, 10 July 2014 08:22 (nine years ago) link

What did holland do to him last night? I barely saw him.

Also were Holland really that filthy all through the last World Cup? You hear that, but I only remember the final.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 July 2014 08:46 (nine years ago) link

The Dutch seemed to be employing a 6-3-1 formation for lots of Argentine attacks

groovypanda, Thursday, 10 July 2014 08:53 (nine years ago) link

Last WC Holland played Brazil p straight up and Uruguay, Spain game the only one where they went full thug iirc

pandemic, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:10 (nine years ago) link

De Jong followed Messi around last night, easy as he was walking when he didn't have the ball. When he did get it and broke into a trot at least one and sometimes 2 Dutch player came to help.

pandemic, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:11 (nine years ago) link

Letting Vlaar take the first penalty the only real mistake from VG. Vlaar was a beast today, flawless, and his tackling nearing perfection at times.

er that was a huge mistake. wtf was Van Gaal doing letting Vlaar take the pen?!?! You never fucking believe for a sec he was going to score.

Cillesen was fkn useless on pens, why didn't Tim K start the game? Again that would've taken the pressure off the Dutch players taking the pens too.

Completely wasted opportunity for a wc final!

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:26 (nine years ago) link

Van Gaal said two of the players he asked to take the first penalty refused. Can someone give me a good reason for wanting Argentina to win this, 'cuz I can't think of any.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:28 (nine years ago) link

The question is who were the two shitebags? I'm guessing Sneijder was one of them.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:30 (nine years ago) link

There aren't really any reasons unless they suddenly click and play brilliantly. Which isn't impossible tbh, with an extra few days for Agüero to recover and di Maria back (is he?), but there's no evidence that that's going to happen.

No real reason to want Germany to lose either, other than history.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:32 (nine years ago) link

Cillesen conceded 1 goal in 330 mins of knockout football so not crazy to have him as your #1 goalie imo.

pandemic, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:36 (nine years ago) link

Sneijder took one later? Plus he scored against Cost Rica so why would he say no?

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:36 (nine years ago) link

Taking the first one is different though, I'd rather take the third too, personally.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:39 (nine years ago) link

I don't have any history with Germany, so no probs there. Di Maria unlikely to play supposedly but...

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:41 (nine years ago) link

Van Gaal knew De Jong wouldn't last the full stretch - but fine, he had to have him closing down Messi for a while but that is one sub so you think he'd factor in whether he'd really be able to bring Krul on later or not.
