Google Translate on this story out of Brazil makes it even more of a howl from the void:
One day July 16, 64 years ago would make Brazil crying his greatest drama, Maracanazo. For this July 8, 2014 he is gushing tears for most of his humiliation. On your knees! The most shameful defeat the country celebrated worldwide for being the football. The stadium Mineirão saw the sad chapter 50 be dimmed, at least for now, in history. Will be difficult to remember that 2-1 to Uruguay in front of what Germany did in this semifinal. An incomparable torture for lovers of canary team. The Germans, in 45 minutes, made mincemeat national dream, finally win the trophy in their territory. A 7-1 which leaves no room for snags, caveats and palliative. There are possible reasons to explain the result size. Absences of Thiago Silva and Neymar, who would reasonably justify a defeat, not fit to explain what we saw. The worst defeat of pentacampeões throughout its glorious history!

Indeed.
You would say an Arg win would be even worse but I don't think Brazilians care.

I notice how the columnists who were all prissily opining that EPL audiences "don't appreciate David Luiz" are suspiciously quiet today.
The man is just too stupid to play football at the highest level. Like at some point during his ridiculous forays forward the question "will I be standing there crying in front of a booing stadium by the final whistle?" might have occurred to him but apparently not.
Feel like adventuring central defenders will have gone the way of tiki-taka by the start of next season, can't see many managers continuing to tolerate it.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 07:45 (nine years ago) link
there's nothing wrong in principle with players who roam, the point is to have a system that accomodates that, maybe don't have 8 or 9 guys all getting forward at once
― Daphnis Celesta, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 08:05 (nine years ago) link
P sure the CL and Confeds Cup are "the highest level" and he's won both.
― pandemic, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 08:52 (nine years ago) link
roaming CB's are a problem if your FB's bomb on sure but Hummels going frwd made one of the goals last night and I doubt if tiki-taka is dead.
― pandemic, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 08:53 (nine years ago) link
dom destroyed twitter last night, favs/rts off the chain
― online hardman, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 09:00 (nine years ago) link
Doesn't matter what system you choose or not choose to play. You can choose tika-taka but if you can't defend corners (as Bayerns failed to do so agaist Madrid) you are stuffed.
Similarly if you are going to not even attempt to tackle or close people down in any way whatsoever...
What happened between goals 2-5 will take a long time to digest.
One thing that could go the way of the dodo is psychologists for team sports. They have been quite successful at getting out of sorts individuals to perform well by managing the noise outside. Brazil and England used one but it appears their methods do not work with a collective unit.
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 09:27 (nine years ago) link
This was almost the greatest 7-1 victory in the history of football, but still the best.
― Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 09:34 (nine years ago) link
Despite their personal quirks, Luiz and Maicon played in two of the best-drilled defences in Europe last season. Dante and Marcello can both play disciplined football when they need to as well. Fernandinho was solid and reliable all year. It looked nothing short of collective madness last night which, as a Spurs fan, i'm fairly used to.

Feeling incredibly satisfied. I hated the way Brazil has been talked and idealised about even after the defensive performances in '94 (not by Tim Vickery though, who has been the best thing on either ITV or BBC, not that he had to try). At least that is done for. xp
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 09:43 (nine years ago) link
One of the most irritating things in football is the romanticized bilge that's spoken and written about Brazilian football, I hope this has put the kibosh on that for a while, a long while.
― Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 09:48 (nine years ago) link
Heard Stan Collymore (I know, apologies) after the game saying, "Brazil imports more quality players to leagues around the world than any other country", which is garbage, it imports a lot of players but, population-wise, it's easily the biggest totalling nation in the world, so big deal. It's been commented on amongst my Celtic supporting chums that you'll be playing the champions of Latvia or Cyprus or Armenia or wherever, and they'll have some Brazilian (sometimes two, sometimes three) playing who earns 10 times as much as anybody else in the team and is total mince.
― Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 09:58 (nine years ago) link
At the time of Scheidt there were strong rumours that Luxemburgo was taking cash from clubs to cap player in friendlies and drive their value up so they could be sold to Europe, and there was a scandal involving Leomar where the coach of Sporting said he paid to get him capped while Leao was manager. And let's not forget, Scolari "discovered" Scheidt while he was manager at Gremio.
― Rabona not glue (aldo), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 10:10 (nine years ago) link
The Brazilian FA started investigating the Leomar case 18 months ago, I don't believe they've done anything yet.
― Rabona not glue (aldo), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 10:12 (nine years ago) link

So if van Persie is unfit for tonight's game can we expect to the Dutch team bringing his jersey on field for the singing of the anthems?

no they'll be well used to him by now tbf
― cpt navajo (darraghmac), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 10:53 (nine years ago) link

― groovypanda, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 12:26 (nine years ago) link
Strictly no, but I'm pretty intrigued by it. Kind of feel that either side might also be ripe for a shoeing, albeit to a lesser extent, but I couldn't say who's more likely to do it to whom.
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 12:32 (nine years ago) link

I thought we had a moratorium in place on "tiki-taka" as a symptom of poor journalism, esp now ppl speak of its demise. Awful lot of quick one-touch passing fron germamy last night, particularly good game from lahm running things in his guardiola role
