I think you mean top drawer. Feel like Lucas Moura could have given Brazil that something extra now that Neymar is out

Number None, Saturday, 5 July 2014 10:39 (nine years ago) link

lol yeah. No Oxford English.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 5 July 2014 10:49 (nine years ago) link

xyz I meant ref assist throughout tournament agreed that the game last night was just straight up badly reffed all round managers statements reasonably nuanced on that, glad to see. agreed on all else you're saying.

is there a chance that Brazil not playing around neymar eases the others into some sort of performance? not sure that the end stages of a tournament are the place for it but man if not its gonna be grimness with frozen opponents kicked the shit out of before luiz scores a fifty yard ribona just to prove it doesn't have to be like this, its just how it is

XP top draw is a common blight but it must in fairness to nn be stamped out wherever it rears, like gunnera tinctoria or poptimism

Van Gaal is taking his tactical shenanigans to an almost metaphysical next level: he is supposedly playing Depay and Kuyt as left and right backs tonight. The real backs are dropped to the bench. I imagine it's like playing two tactics in one game: 5-3-2 when the opponent has the ball, and as soon as we get the ball transform to 3-4-3/3-5-2 with Kuyt and Depay on the flanks. Think it can genuinely work.

formation is nothing. there is only drago

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 July 2014 11:04 (nine years ago) link

Love it. Imagine what he's going to do with Rooney next season

Number None, Saturday, 5 July 2014 11:21 (nine years ago) link

Haha yes! The challops are endless :)

isn't that how many teams do it with this formation anyway? Juve, Chile, etc. not really ~tactical innovation~ from VG...

Both games yesterday were a bit shit, weren't they?

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Saturday, 5 July 2014 13:09 (nine years ago) link

nah the col bra game was mad

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 July 2014 13:27 (nine years ago) link

I thought it was the most disappointing, possibly outright crappiest, single day of the tournament so far.

Col Bra was a foulfest

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Saturday, 5 July 2014 13:37 (nine years ago) link

The tournament always becomes kinda crap in the final stretch. 0-0 games.

Frederik B, Saturday, 5 July 2014 13:40 (nine years ago) link

Yesterday had some good goals and a scary grasshopper. Good quarterfinals day.

Frederik B, Saturday, 5 July 2014 13:41 (nine years ago) link

I enjoyed the second game once Colombia got going and until Brazil spoiled the game. 2010 was the direct opposite - amazing QFs, shit tournament

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 5 July 2014 13:45 (nine years ago) link

I would have liked more grasshoppers.

The tournament always becomes kinda crap in the final stretch.

Four of the last seven world cups have had higher average goals per game in the last eight than in the group stages

Kompany's anti racism speech in Dutch and French there

StanM, Saturday, 5 July 2014 15:55 (nine years ago) link

Is the Belgian press giving them any chance of winning the whole thing, Stan?

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:02 (nine years ago) link

The whole thing, not really, but at the same time nobody believes this is the highest this generation will ever reach.

Next euro championship, next WC perhaps. They're probably too young now.

StanM, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:08 (nine years ago) link

nice ball di maria

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:08 (nine years ago) link

terrific finish

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:09 (nine years ago) link

amazing corner

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:15 (nine years ago) link

promising start, both seem to actually want to win the game

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:15 (nine years ago) link

Why can't Belgium take a corner? They had about 20 vs the US and they felt completely valueless - other teams are better at this, right?

Maps, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:23 (nine years ago) link

altho he has not exactly shone in brazil the way arg are defending makes me think this would be a good game for lukaku

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:26 (nine years ago) link

XP spurs arent

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:29 (nine years ago) link

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

Shame, I like his enthusiasm xp

StanM, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

yeah it was right after a really sweet sequence where he had a one on one opp that was unfortunately blocked.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

lol way to play into Messi's trap Belgium

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:38 (nine years ago) link

ow that almost grazed the sac a bit

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:39 (nine years ago) link

I think I'd better stop watching, Belgium only scores when I don't watch

StanM, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:40 (nine years ago) link

beautiful cross

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 July 2014 16:41 (nine years ago) link

Despite not being 'a natural left back' Vertonghen's crossing is excellent.
