I also like Disco 2000 much more than Common People.

for the record, i despise britney. not for her pop-culture-ness (i like plenty of other stuff along those lines, including xtina and gwen) but because she couldn't sing worth a damn if her life was on the line

I also like Disco 2000 much more than Common People.

Me too, though I can't really explain why. 'Common People' is like going to the opera, maybe. It's just too much to casually enjoy as the singalong anthem that everyone else seems to be able to treat it as.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

'baby one more time'

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Only six of my list (and one of my top ten) have made it so far.

Probably still to come:

Unfinished Sympathy
Groove is in the Heart
Music Sounds Better With You
Are You That Somebody?
Loser
Mind Playing Tricks on Me
Nuthin' But a G Thang

Possibly still to come:

Regulate
Regret
Super Going
Chime
Web in Front
The Last Dance

Sorry RJG - I had it right the first time!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

disco 2000 was my number 1 pick of the 90's and possibly my favorite song ever.

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Back to the Blur/Oasis/Pulp thing, where the hell is SUEDE!

I like the songs where Brit's inability to sing is an asset rather than a hindrance (this is why all of the banging dance tunes where she's used as a sound-effect are great and the mid-tempo pop numbers and the ballads don't work at all).

Chime

Probably still to come:

Nuthin' But a G Thang

But Britney's voice isn't even interesting as a sound.

it is now that's she smoking

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:00 (nineteen years ago) link

i am almost positive that music sounds better with you will be in the top thirty.

Re Common People: It's just too much to casually enjoy as the singalong anthem that everyone else seems to be able to treat it as.

By everyone, do you mean those "common" people, Alba? (I used to have exactly the same problem with "Design for Life", then realised I didn't actually give a shit why other people liked it as it made no difference to whether I liked it or not)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Locks?:
Common People
California Love
Born Slippy
Creep
He's on the Phone
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Live Forever
Soon
Da Funk
Enjoy the Silence

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:08 (nineteen years ago) link

No, it's not that at all, ailsa, if you're trying to get at some "they don't understand it" thing. If anything, my problem on that score is that the people who sing along aren't common.

It's just that it's too histrionic and big a song to listen to casually, for me, even on my own.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:09 (nineteen years ago) link

(if correct, when added to Alba and Dr. Bill's picks, we've got about 20 of the top 30)

(xpost)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure 'Da Funk' or 'Live Forever' will be there.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Or 'Enjoy The Silence', even, but I don't really understand Depeche Mode.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:10 (nineteen years ago) link

live forever was #73

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:11 (nineteen years ago) link

And why 'He's On The Phone' would be so far ahead of the other St Etienne tracks I don't know. More likely not to be there at all, I'd say. But I haven't been keeping up with the 'list your choices here' thread, so maybe I'm way off.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:12 (nineteen years ago) link

"Creep" was up there too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I really gotta disagree with you about some of those, Alba. The placement of "Chime" is by no means certain--I'd think "Belfast" and "Halcyon" to be just as beloved, as not more so, and those placed ages ago. And the more I think about it, the more convinced I am that "Super Going" and "The Last Dance" (especially the latter) will make it--fanbase is just rabid enough.

Anyway, here's my prediction for the rest. It could be way, way, way off, this was a hard one to peg.

29. Daft Punk - "Da Funk"
28. Warren G. f/ Nate Dogg - "Regulate"
27. Boredoms - "Super Going"
26. Disco Inferno - "Summer's Last Sound"
25. Radiohead - "Airbag"
24. Aphex Twin - "Windowlicker"
23. Jay-Z - "Big Pimpin'"
22. Boo Radleys - "Lazarus"
21. Neutral Milk Hotel - "Two-Headed Boy"
20. Aaliyah - "Are You That Somebody?"
19. Joey Beltram - "Energy Flash"
18. Belle and Sebastian - "The State I Am In"
17. Bjork - "Hyperballad"
16. Depeche Mode - "Enjoy the Silence"
15. Geto Boys - "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me"
14. Beck - "Loser"
13. Blur - "For Tomorrow"
12. Disco Inferno - "The Last Dance"
11. Breeders - "Cannonball"
10. Saint Etienne - "He's on the Phone"
9. Dr. Dre - "Nuthin' But a "G" Thang"
8. My Bloody Valentine - "Soon"
7. Massive Attack - "Unfinished Sympathy"
6. Deee-Lite - "Groove is in the Heart"
5. Stardust - "Music Sounds Better With You"
4. Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
3. Underworld - "Born Slippy (Nuxx)"
2. Radiohead - "Paranoid Android"
1. Pulp - "Common People"

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I haven't looked at the lists people have been posting on the other thread ... those lists might help to render my predictions moot ...

Maybe the "Enjoy the Silence" prediction is just wishful thinking on my part (my #1).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

How many "common people" in the U.S. actually have heard "Common People"? Perhaps it was just an issue of exposure, but it definitely didn't resonate over here with anyone other than many of the people who claim empathy w/ "common people." Ironic?

Anyway I'm really weirded out by the high placement of that britney song, and I have trouble imagining that SO many people really honestly think its that good of a song, and that many of its votes aren't just a reaction to rockist dismissals of britney by ppl like rentboy.

Anyway I sure don't like it, and it's no where near as good as Toxic or I'm A Slave or, yes, Genie in a Bottle.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I think "Enjoy the Silence" can rightly be considered a lock. The Cure / DMode factor can't be ignored on polls like this, and if "Pictures of You" made it there's no reason that "Enjoy the Silence" shouldn't be.

I'm pretty sure at least one DP song will make it, whether it'll be "Da Funk" or "Around the World" is anyone's guess.

I don't see "California Love" as a lock at all. Maybe it'll be there but it's not definite.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I meant that it just came across like "I'm better than these people who like the tune but don't get it". Which is an OK opinion in itself in my book, I'm all for claiming superiority over people however unjustified (I do it all the time, and it is rarely justified!), but it shouldn't spoil your own opinion of the song. I don't think I'm explaining this very well, and I totally failed to get your meaning first time round. I understand now though. Sorry, I wasn't getting at you :)

(mega mega x post)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Deej and I in total agreement about "Baby One More Time," huh? Go figure.

I guess it just gets a lot of credit for being the first.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:17 (nineteen years ago) link

i think shimmy shimmy ya and nothing compares 2 u will make it. i am reconciling myself to the fact that come clean probably won't.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe you're right about 'Chime', Bill. I just automatically think of it as one of those classic singles, and I'm not even a huge Orbital fan. I just thought the Disco Inferno vote would be too split for them to make it this high. I've no idea what 'Super Going' is.

Back to 'Common People' - even if I can hum along to the first bit, by the time it gets to the "Like a dog lying in a corner" bit, no - I don't want to be turned inside out again like that every time.

Funnily enough, I can listen to my favourite Pulp song of all ('The Fear') as many times as I like. Maybe it's because it doesn't pretend to be all bouncy. I dunno.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I never actually heard "Common People" as being sung by a common person. They met at Art School! It's a real "takes one to know one" song.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Bill, I'd say Cali Love's got a very very good chance.

Incidently to be clear - I'm not questioning that some people don't love that Britney song, just that the consensus would be so widespread among people that otherwise worship at the alter of Paranoid Android seems a little suspect. (And I find it hard to believe that Britney would rank so high w/out SOME overlap between radiohead-heads and pop-heads).

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

(xpost, thanks Alex and Shmool, I messed up).

Dr. Bill's predictions look good (he did a really good job with his 00's poll predictions too), but I don't know about Neutral Milk Hotel and two Disco Inferno songss ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I was hoping to be surprised by the results. These predictions are ruining it for me!!!

billstevejim, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:20 (nineteen years ago) link

"lazarus" has no chance at this point - and "chime" will make it for sure! It seems like the consensus 'most popular' Orbital track.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Baby, One More Time has almost identical chord structure to Exit Music.

Which isn't to say that I like it because it sounds like Radiohead, but because I'm a sucker for certain chord progressions, no matter their source.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:20 (nineteen years ago) link

By now, I don't think 'Energy Flash' is going to make it, either.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Jesus, who is this 'Pulp' you all speak of?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:21 (nineteen years ago) link

prediction (sorry billstevejm): are you that somebody in the top 10

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:21 (nineteen years ago) link

(And I find it hard to believe that Britney would rank so high w/out SOME overlap between radiohead-heads and pop-heads).

I had "Paranoid Android" and "Where Are You Baby" in my top ten. Obviously I was one of the Britney voters. I don't do anti-rockism or irony in my taste in music.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Miccio - you're kind of right, but it's often where you're from, not where you're at.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

many of its votes aren't just a reaction to rockist dismissals of britney by ppl like rentboy.

whoah whoah whoah, did i just get called a "rockist"???
hahahaha so far from right. take another look at my top 10, k?thnx

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe "Regret" will appear at some point too.

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

No chance on "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," I'd say--thirty higher than any Wu song? Ridiculosuly unlikely. "Nothing Compares 2 U" has a fairly high chance. And yeah, no "Come Clean".

I hope against hope I'm wrong about "Chime". It is indeed "one of those classic singles" but I think its reputation has been eclipsed by the other two since. Once again, very hopeful that I'm wronga bout that.

DI vote splitting is a good point, which I think will kill the chances of "It's a Kid's World," "Love Stepping Out" and possibly "Summer's Last Sound," but I think that "The Last Dance" has a reputation strong enough to crossover to the lists of non DI obsessives (such as myself) as well, which I don't think the others have.

"Super Going" is my favorite Boredoms song and the only Boredoms song nominated. If VCN's ridiculously high placing on the 00s poll is any indication, I think their fanbase is strong enough to put "Super Going" into the 20s, but the anonymity of the specific song to non-obsessives (as you just proved) might hurt it too much. It's a toss-up.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:23 (nineteen years ago) link

no "give it to you"

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:24 (nineteen years ago) link

well, yeah. it's clear his dad probably couldn't "stop at all," probably just write him a nice christmas check.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:26 (nineteen years ago) link

'Nothing Compares 2 U' will surely be there.

I know next to nothing about Neutral Milk Hotel, but aren't they more of an albums band? Is this 'Two-Headed Boy' far and away their best song, like 'Super Going'?

'Lazarus'? No way.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm enjoying this bold prediction game.
