Because they're terrible? Brazil deserves a better team than this team. All the same would be bad to see the host nation getting turfed out in the second round so I'm undecided who to root for

Well done Howard Webb

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:15 (nine years ago) link

That wasn't sarcasm btw

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:15 (nine years ago) link

Brazil have hardly been terrible, merely underwhelming in the group stage, like plenty of tournament winners before them. just seems an exaggerated dislike to me, as if it's their fault for being the home team

clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:16 (nine years ago) link

from what i remember 94 Brazil were uglier than this for the entire competition

clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:17 (nine years ago) link

brazil might be terrible at fulfilling the platonic ideal of a brazil side but they're pretty decent at playing football

ogmor, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:17 (nine years ago) link

basically there hasn't been a platonic Brazil side since what? 1982?

clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

the only reason the cheer for Brazil imo is for fear that the country will go up in flames if they get knocked out

otherwise fuck em

gbx, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

welp

gbx, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:19 (nine years ago) link

urgh feel this is going to be brutal for Chile

Def an own goal

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:21 (nine years ago) link

That's what we thought

That's How Strong My Dub Is (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:21 (nine years ago) link

This could have been a mess by now if the ref hadn't been Webb.

StanM, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:25 (nine years ago) link

i don't want to disagree with ilxors who may not catch his work on the reg but Howard Webb is fucking shit

clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:27 (nine years ago) link

brilliant awareness by vargas

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

wait brazil's goalie is from the MLS?? o____o

le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

brazil have had one competent goalkeeper since the 60s and he was a blond white dude so shouldn't even count

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:40 (nine years ago) link

that seems especially shaky though

le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:42 (nine years ago) link

i'm surprised brazil hadn't hijacked one of their teenage basketball players and forced him to learn to play goalie

le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:42 (nine years ago) link

How does Howard Webb get selected for these international gigs if he's crap in the Premiership? Or do only Liverpool fans think he sucks? (a quick googling session seems to point in that direction but I really don't know)

StanM, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:43 (nine years ago) link

2002 was platonic ideal Brazil side, and everybody yawned

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:45 (nine years ago) link

Chile really shd've gone in front at the end there, pretty sure Webb will manage to give Brazil something in the second half if they're still struggling at 70ish minutes

clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:51 (nine years ago) link

basically webb is the most experienced english ref, and he has a bearing that inspires confidence the first time you see him

he's legit bad though

caek, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:53 (nine years ago) link

I think he's a pretty average ref overall but his on pitch presence & the way he interacts with players gives him the aura of a really classy & in control one

cerealbar, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:53 (nine years ago) link

god that chumminess is one of the things i hate most

Does look like the sort of fellow who'd take everybody on a lap around the field and then ask everybody to drop and give him 20

an empire builder

caek, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:56 (nine years ago) link

he was a policeman before he turned pro as a ref

caek, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:56 (nine years ago) link

2010 World Cup final was a masterclass in allowing one team to try and kill the other tho

clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:57 (nine years ago) link

Apparently, Luis Suarez has claimed that he didn't mean to bite but he fell on Chiellini's shoulder.

StanM, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:59 (nine years ago) link

Same thing happened way back when, in the Uruguayan Youth League, he didn't mean to headbutt the ref, he fell.

That's How Strong My Dub Is (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 28 June 2014 17:01 (nine years ago) link
