And next they get Belgium (probably). Beckerman v Fellaini. That's gonna be fun, eh?

USA?USA?USA?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 26 June 2014 17:56 (nine years ago) link

The only good thing about Bedoya is his name which sounds like the sort of sproinging noise you get when you reverberate a ruler off the edge of a desk. Well done USA, you made some friends happy and you (probably) made Cristiano Ronaldo cry.

Thought Gonzalez was good for USA today

Is Thomas Muller the secret best player in the world? He's amazing.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:00 (nine years ago) link

Muller is the new Ruud Gullit.

i reject your shiny expensive consumerist stereo system (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:02 (nine years ago) link

He was 4/1 to be Germany's top scorer, which is ridiculous.

RTE pundits blaming Howard for the goal

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:07 (nine years ago) link

Obviously vmooc for me to cheer against Russia but i hope Algeria stuff them tonight.

Really don't want Capello to still be in charge come 2018. His squad selection was wrong (leaving out Artyom Dzuba in particular), his team selection has been wrong and his tactics have been wrong.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:07 (nine years ago) link

They'll only hire Mourinho and stink 2018 up for longer

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:08 (nine years ago) link

US&A!

I swear, explaining how we can advance while losing is one of the best parts of American soccer fandom.

dan m, Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:08 (nine years ago) link

game of groans but the US moves on

so south korea has to beat up Belgium today? let's do this South Korea

if you're posting on this thread you care more about the 2014 world cup than ronaldo

caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

Ronaldo, after his goal, basically couldn't be asked to try to score another - he really shouldn't have done, but one gets the feeling he didn't think hid team deserved a rousing finish

avicii usque ad arse (imago), Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:27 (nine years ago) link

You can advance while losing because it's a mini league. If merikans don't get that easily, well... Fucking hell.

i reject your shiny expensive consumerist stereo system (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:27 (nine years ago) link

Should, even

avicii usque ad arse (imago), Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:27 (nine years ago) link

oh, it's a mini league. like all those other mini league point-based progression sports we have in amurica

Mordy, Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:28 (nine years ago) link

That clears it up - I thought the World Cup was played with mega league rules

, Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:34 (nine years ago) link

i miss the days of the mega league

clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:47 (nine years ago) link

i try to stay balanced on these things but i will say, having to suffer it first hand and repeatedly, this affectation of gormless head scratching about the US going thru despite losing is basically the greatest moment of shame in this country's miserable history

caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 18:59 (nine years ago) link

I had explain that we advanced to my dad who is in France right now bc he was watching coverage with German commentary and dosent speak German. I had to explain the mechanics of advancing while losing to friends and acquaintances who don't get wc rules.

Xxp you should probably seek therapy soon, apparently explaining the rules of international soccer tournaments to woefully ignorant Americans is tantamount to facing bullets in a war. you prob have PTSD now

other than morbs (who is easily confused nowadays for understandable reasons, i think everyone could show an ounce of pity and ignore it) who are these ppl confused by the us advancing? thought everybody had seen the flood of infographics showing that unless ghana won it was almost certain the us would advance, or if they hadn't would've heard repeated references to it throughout the game

Feel so amazing now that we've won the World Cup

Amazing tournament and every team played well but in the end true skill prevailed

USA! USA! USA!

, Thursday, 26 June 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

i do think it's great that we can take the whole thing w/out winning once, just like every war we've lost after 1945

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 26 June 2014 19:22 (nine years ago) link

Inaccuracy just might be on purpose ;)
