does that mean they will score/concede 10 goals because they are playing old forwards on defense, or does it mean that they are not being serious?
― Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 23 June 2014 14:52 (nine years ago) link
the last two group games should be played simultaneously on two fields that intersect at the center, forming a cross. this way you could play your game, while also trying to change the outcome of the other game.

<3 Kuyt, but with this Holland may be setting themselves up for a second-round game against Brazil. Are you fine with that LBI?

ik idk if you've been watching but Brazil are total shit
― leave the web boys alone (darraghmac), Monday, 23 June 2014 15:30 (nine years ago) link
Still Brazil in Brazil though. And in any case it's a genuine question when the alternative is likely Mexico, I'm not trying to point-and-laugh at Holland or anything.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:33 (nine years ago) link
group stage performance not necessarily a good indicator (but it's the only one we've got)

5300+ posts -> What do you all say to opening another thread when the group stages are over? (Friday?)
― StanM, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:42 (nine years ago) link
No:• nobody's ever going to try to open the whole thing;• I like this thread.
Yes:• can get rid of FIFA from the thread title. It's 'the World Cup' ffs, not 'the FIFA World Cup'.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:45 (nine years ago) link
Apparently we're not allowed to do that
― Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 23 June 2014 15:47 (nine years ago) link
No, I'm not fine with that IK. Van Gaal's idea is that the Chile backs run up so far, that a workhorse is needed to track them. Martins Indi is injured. I would've moved Blind to left back and Kongolo as a centre defender.
Now we've got a right-footed winger as left back. And it's Kuyt. It sounds so utterly ridiculous it just might work.

You've riled me about this before NBS
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link
Having said that, and I'm at the very least ambiguous about Van Gaal, he has pulled stunts like this before, where seemingly batshit insane choices actually paid off. So yeah.
Xp

• can get rid of FIFA from the thread title. It's 'the World Cup' ffs, not 'the FIFA World Cup'.
I've been wondering when someone was going to bring that up. FINALLY!
― Number None, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:52 (nine years ago) link
At least that sounds like an intention to win. My first thought was that he was just giving the first XI a rest.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:53 (nine years ago) link
Oh no, defo intention to win (or draw).

Say what you like about Brazil not being v good. But it's Brazil, in Brazil. Would rather avoid that tbh

The shadows on the pitch from the stadium have been consistently odd throughout the tournament,
Following a 2-2 tie with Portugal, the United States and Germany could both advance from Group G with a tie in the final group match. When asked about possible collusion with Germany in a postgame press conference, USMNT, and former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann spoke plainly about the United States’ intentions.“The U.S. is known to give all they have in every single game,” said Klinsmann, adding: “Otherwise Mexico wouldn’t be here.”

spain have a little bit of rhythm, australia doing a good job of defending & slowing them down so far - but with no bresciano & no cahill they look so disorganized whenever they near the box, its hard to see us getting many chances downfield? idk

I just switched onto the Spain v Australia match for 5 secs. Spain had a corner, took it short, and 3 passes later it was with Casillas.
