Jesus Christ that village voice coachella thing is so dour

Now I Am Become Dracula (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 20 June 2014 14:07 (nine years ago) link

Yeah the Voice in the last several years is like a debauched, strung-out junkie version of its former self.

I like cracked in that they'll put at least a modicum of actual research into their bits.

Also their ed-in-chief has admitted to writing some Clickhole jokes. I wonder how many AV Club/Dissolve writers have done the same.

Stephen King's Threaderstarter (kingfish), Friday, 20 June 2014 17:54 (nine years ago) link

I can imagine some humor writers who've finessed their craft for a decade could probably get a little bent out of shape at the Buzzfeeds, Crackeds, Chives, &c getting monster traffic by gaming the system as opposed to actually making better material.

and the onion kind of depends on the existence of normal news to acclimatize people! what must young buzzfeed hedz even think about all those worrrrds

tbh i sort of felt bad for cracked once buzzfeed and upworthy usurped facebook, they sucked but at least they put some time in

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Saturday, 21 June 2014 00:01 (nine years ago) link

yeah i checked cracked just now and they've gone way more upworthy and less gonzo

i mean, i think a huge part of my enjoyment of clickhole is working in the media industry for 12 years and slowly watching the media outlets I love move from

http://www.villagevoice.com/2003-04-15/music/mr-and-mrs-used-to-be/

to

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2013/04/hottest_dancing_coachella_gifs.php

Since the Onion itself has moved from making weekly satire to hourly clickbait, I'm guessing a lot of veterans of the staff are feeling the fatigue, and I imagine clickhole is coming from a very real place

Who is the ideal ClickHole reader?

J. A.: I think we see the ideal ClickHole reader as a hollow shell who exists purely to click on our content and then share that content with other hollow shells.

I went, I clicked a couple, I thought "Very funny". Not the site but that you tricked me. Trust has taken a hit. When trust is gone then we will probably break up. Bad enough that the Onion went from funny to opinionated just like the TV show M*A*S*H did (Die Alan Alda, die). I blame Baby-Boomers (stupid name). Acting all hip then becoming their parents. Now listen up: Children are not cute or adorable, especially yours. Your children now in their 20's or so are insipid morons. Totally clueless and smug. It is because you called your son "Sport" and made him smoke dope with you. Lame. How many episodes of "Friends" did I watch? Can "Sport" count to "zero"?
How bad is it? I will tell you. I saw some "true crime" show recently. The show needed a young female author to fill the viewers in on nuances we may have missed due to bad acting. She had written a book about the Manson Family (look out Bugliosi) and stated to the viewers, "The Manson Family were at the core of the hippie movement in the 1960's. What???? What???? What????

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 20:13 (nine years ago) link

i think what feedbuzz didnt get but what clickhole does is it's not enough to make fun of the form, which is very easy and simple and which basically anyone can do (see every bad "You Won't Believe What Happens Next!" Upworthy joke on twitter), but the content actually has to be funny to

loved feedbuzz and it was kinda a lark anyway so don't think it's a real slam to say that this thing one of the more consistent comedy institutions of the past twenty years has come out w/ betters it

balls, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 04:06 (nine years ago) link

pretty much the hole fake onion sites fall into where they don't understand humor and think the formula is fake news (wish fulfillment) plus words means funny

mh, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 04:15 (nine years ago) link

There was an article somewhere about how some of those sites may not actually be trying that hard to be funny, just going for clicks based on confused shares.

feedbuzz was way more variable, but that was part of the fun. it had lower lows but it aimed for the bleachers sometimes.
