I like some. Got tons of Augustus Pablo and King Tubby and really love Sister Nancy, but there's only so much time in a day, you know?

Fair enough.

We're trying to avoid Astoria until after the sports are over.

If only I had made it to one of those terazza shows. Maybe they'd still be in business.

Hier Komme Die Warum Jetzt (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 01:06 (nine years ago) link

I had one of those only in queens moments tonight where my train was stuck for a really long time and I wound up in this long conversation with an old Greek guy, a bunch of Indian tourists on their way to check out Costco and a somewhat meek southern baptist recent transplant from Virginia

Lots of honking tonight too. Some guys that play with Hermeto visiting from Brazil at Terraza tonight

Good drummer too, playing a lot more than when I've seen him before. Inspired by the visit from his compatriots.

Wonder what happened to hippie busker on 82nd. He was pretty good. Did a solid version of "Sister Goldenhair" a few weeks ago.

Great show at Terraza tonight. They are on break now so you can run right over for second set.

Rec for a place to drink and/or maybe eat near the forest hills tennis stadium?

Virginia Plain, Friday, 19 September 2014 13:51 (nine years ago) link

Because you're going to see the 'Mats?

Code Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 19 September 2014 13:55 (nine years ago) link

no, she's going to see Rod Laver.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 September 2014 14:29 (nine years ago) link

Ha. I was going to guess Phil Lesh.

Code Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 19 September 2014 14:48 (nine years ago) link

I have no advice, bcz the only time i've been to that stadium was to see Costello in '84. (Not Lou.)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 September 2014 14:57 (nine years ago) link

Ha, I probably was at the same show. Was the opening act Talk Talk?

When I saw him Hudson River pier opening act was Marshall Crenshaw, I believe.

Jack & Nellie's on Ascan is a decent gastropub with good atmosphere. Station House is a good beer bar but gets a little jocky at times. A lot of locals also like Dirty Pierre's but I haven't been.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Friday, 19 September 2014 15:23 (nine years ago) link

no, that was Joe Jackson's opener!

This is not helping VPlain one iota. xp

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 September 2014 15:23 (nine years ago) link

You are right about Joe Jackson though.

Code Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 19 September 2014 15:31 (nine years ago) link

How far is Nick's pizza from the stadium? Probably be rammed.

dan selzer, Friday, 19 September 2014 15:43 (nine years ago) link

Not that far -- thought about recommending it, but it's more of a place to "eat and possibly drink" than vice versa. And as you note, not a lot of seating and probably will be crowded on a concert day. I also had surprisingly good food at Agora recently, and Bangkok Cuisine is decent thai. And there's also a Bareburger.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Friday, 19 September 2014 15:51 (nine years ago) link

Thanks! I think I'll try Station House--seems most convenient.

Virginia Plain, Friday, 19 September 2014 18:38 (nine years ago) link

Mutual friend of mine and Alex in NYC is going and has extra tickets he needs to sell. I'd go but am under the weather.

Code Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 19 September 2014 23:00 (nine years ago) link

Anyway hardly ever go to rock shows anymore and usually only if
1) They are free and
2) Morbius and Ian are in attendance

Code Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 20 September 2014 02:27 (nine years ago) link

you are describing ONE show there

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 20 September 2014 02:30 (nine years ago) link

Ha, yes. But one film too.

Could have added "or hstencil" to the latter and got another show. No wait, that was paid admission, never mind.

Code Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 20 September 2014 02:38 (nine years ago) link

Was feeling knida shitty and only made it for the last 15-20 minutes, but glad I did. Inspiring to see that huge-ish crowd lit up by the anti-anthems.

...

I was going to guess Phil Lesh.

If not for the above, among other factors, I might be the among the select to make both shows.

benbbag, Sunday, 21 September 2014 05:46 (nine years ago) link

Report: We went to Station House for one drink pre-concert. It was packed. We stopped in somewhere on Austin Street for drinks after--it was quieter. At the concert, I accidentally dropped a whole glass of beer on top of the people sitting in front of me. They took it remarkably well.

My friend who I went with was also at that '82 Costello concert. I loved the venue . . . would definitely see shows there again. It somehow felt very non-New York to me. Reminded me a bit of the vibe of the Greek Theater in Berkeley.

Virginia Plain, Sunday, 21 September 2014 18:05 (nine years ago) link

I want to see something there, but there hasn't been a thing I badly enough wanted to see yet, though I'm sure Replacements would have been good.

Austin St. was awash in middle-aged men in tye dye on Phil Lesh day -- it seemed a little surreal and took me a sec before I remembered what was going on.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 22 September 2014 21:15 (nine years ago) link

I think they're going a little "safe" with the booking so far because of fears from the neighborhood.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 22 September 2014 21:18 (nine years ago) link

(Xpost) Lol. Sometimes you run into people you haven't seen in years walking by a venue hosting a Dead-related show. At least in my experience.

Code Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 22 September 2014 23:29 (nine years ago) link

It's like what the last episode of Freaks & Geeks was foreshadowing.
