This is some magnificent awkward-squadding from Cahill. Australia looking much better now they're not expecting him to run with the ball, just generally put himself about and see if he can make Gonzalo Jara cry. Mark Bresciano is quietly running shit in midfield, too. Chile should have been giving Australia a way harder time of things; yes, their passing and technique is sick, but they really are not impressive without the ball.

Australia's other exciting new plan, Do Not Ever Pass To Tommy Oar Unless It Is Literally Your Only Option, is also working nicely.

ok so if that had gone over the line, would they have stopped the run of play for a kick off and 3-1 chile or would it have just carried on and been tallied 3-1 or would it stay 2-1 or what

i don't want to give them too much of a pass...lot of sloppy bullshit & faffing about & they lost 3-1 when they should have at least tied. like, do you want a pat on the head for trying or do you want to fucking win. hmph.

the australian attitude of expecting to win works if you're the cricket team, the rugby team or lleyton hewitt in 2001/2, but maybe less so in this instance ;)

Real life intervened yesterday which meant that I only got to the pub in time for the fourth Holland goal and the place was going mental. Were Spain playing a suicidally high line against Robben and RVP or was it just general ineptitude plus terrifying attacking play?

God, imagine being Casillas right now? Maybe ever Real Madrid player is going to have a comedy-horrific World Cup? If Benzema somehow scores and own-goal and gets sent off we'll know.

I did watch all of Mexico-Cameroon and the whole thing was a bit Championship, especially the goalmouth scramble that seemed to go on forever. Lovely run up the left from Benny though.

Matt DC, Saturday, 14 June 2014 09:12 (nine years ago) link

Both back lines were susceptible to a killer pass, but great goals either side of the half and the Spanish didn't know what to do. Although I wonder where the game would've gone if the 3rd goal was disallowed.

Looks like the Brazilian climate doesn't agree with Spain. That and Vincente complacently giving Torres his ticket.

Chile took it somewhat easily. William otm, don't quite know what they are up to without the ball; Spain - Chile will be some game.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 14 June 2014 09:51 (nine years ago) link

btw did we comment on the fact that spain were playing in white and holland in blue. wtf was up with that? i'm sure fifa's to blame for that.

Jibe, Saturday, 14 June 2014 10:04 (nine years ago) link

Yes, that FIFA rule is still in effect for the black and white TV viewers. All three of them.

StanM, Saturday, 14 June 2014 10:13 (nine years ago) link

haha yeah, i looked it up and apparently spain was the home team so they chose to wear red, so holland couldn't be in orange as they're too similar. then fifa told spain that their red kit was dark, as was holland's so they needed to change to a light color (because of all three b&w tv viewers as stanm said), hence the white. lol fifa

Jibe, Saturday, 14 June 2014 10:55 (nine years ago) link

Why couldn't Holland have worn orange in that case?
