The fall is short, also

All the seasons seems short except for winter, which takes years apparently

I like how cheap it is where I am. That's a great thing about New England. Living like a king!

Kornblud (admrl), Monday, 9 June 2014 16:59 (nine years ago) link

I guess this wouldn't be true if I were in Boston.

Kornblud (admrl), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:00 (nine years ago) link

I might go to Boston next Friday, for the first time, after living here a year.

yea the old houses are awesome, cool little towns, i like all the woods, nice combination of more densely populated areas with picturesque rural landscapes. lots of good farmers markets. i love how easily accessible everything is. liberal politics are nice too. basically everybody is liberal here. there is definitely some white conservatism and it's not the west coast or anything but it's nice to live in an overall progressive area. gay marriage in most (if not all?) states. since i work in academia it's also cool to have so many colleges and universities here, too. having the ocean nearby is nice too.

Depends where on the West Coast you mean. I moved here from CA and I find it a little politically stuffy at times. But maybe that varies throughout the Northeast, I dunno. I too work in academia but I prefer that stuff in small does, you know...it has it's place.

Kornblud (admrl), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:09 (nine years ago) link

I do like New England, btw, I just still feel like I'm finding my way & looking for an "in"

Kornblud (admrl), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:09 (nine years ago) link

Too many colleges = not a good thing, in my opinion, that's why I live a little ways away from where I work.

I like the clouds here. And I like the summers and the lushness and the swimming holes. That stuff we didn't have in LA.

xp - ok sure

Kornblud (admrl), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:11 (nine years ago) link

And I like the first snow a lot.

But snow in April? You've got to be fucking kidding me

Moving to New England has also helped me appreciate that I don't love NYC all that much, which is helpful. It's nice for a visit, but I prefer Montreal.

My dad's neighborhood has a house with a widow's perch on it. Complete disregard for city's residential zoning rules, imo.

I have lived very close to some body of water (usually the ocean) for all of my life with the exception of the two years I spend in England but there's a river there so that counts. When I was very small we lived in Key West and then Long Island/Fire Island. You can get to somewhere on the water within about 20 mins from most places in Boston. I feel most me by the water and would love to really live right near the ocean one day. Swimming in the ocean is one of my most favorite things. Anyway, this picture is going to be my daily calm from now on. I'm putting it here so I can come and look at it whenever I need to.

awesome, beautiful gif ENBB! i agree that there are few things as wonderful as swimming in the ocean. i feel at peace and at the same time i am overwhelmed by its power, something about being immersed in this vast body of water is just really humbling? sounds kind of hippy-dippy but i am very hippy-dippy

marcos, Monday, 16 June 2014 13:46 (nine years ago) link

v beautiful

i do wish though that the ocean in new england was just a little bit warmer, i love being near it but i find it hard to swim for very long b/c i get so cold. southern oceans i can spend hours in

marcos, Monday, 16 June 2014 13:47 (nine years ago) link

And here we have a gif that combines two of my favorite things.

marcos, Friday, 20 June 2014 13:30 (nine years ago) link

i don't know a whole lot of swimming holes, in western mass there is a very nice one that is a short 5-10 minute walk from the montague book mill. the book mill is one of my favorite places in the world, no hyperbole. admrl you probably know of it already but it's a used bookstore built into an old mill building on this creek and there's a really good cafe with sandwiches and beer and coffee, plus a small art gallery and a record shop. it rules. it's kind of a perfect summer day to go to the book mill for lunch, browse for a while, and then do the short walk to the swimming hole and hang out there for a while.
