Bar Harbor is very pretty. It's a little or maybe a lot touristy iirc but still nice. That whole area is gorgeous.

I am overjoyed for this unexpected but very welcome thread revive.

I admire New England, but I don't love it yet. It's too pretty in a way?

new england is beautiful but there are plenty of ugly shitholes here

or springfield, or new bedford, or lynn, or chelsea, or holyoke, or or or or or

marcos, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:19 (nine years ago) link

also bar harbor is awesome. spend as much time as possible in acadia, that whole park is utterly spectacular. wife & i hiked 3 or 4 long, full days there and barely saw any 2 trails that looked similar. and we barely made a dent in the park. such a diverse landscape. cliff trails, rocky beach trails, birch trails, pine trails, lake perimeter trails, mountain trails, dense deciduous trails. it was really amazing.

bar harbor had an amazing vegan restaurant, eden cafe, but yelp says it's closed. bummer, it was really cool and the owners were awesome people who make all kinds of cool art in the off season.

basically any urban area in southern new england

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:27 (nine years ago) link

Chelsea sorta grew on me when I worked there but yes to all of those listed.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Monday, 9 June 2014 14:29 (nine years ago) link

otm. maine has some depressed shitholes too if am not mistaken.

new england's prettiness is primarily restricted to cute smaller towns and rural areas. there some exceptions, boston obviously has a few attractive neighborhoods

marcos, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:30 (nine years ago) link

both vermont and maines larger cities are quite nice imo, there are def some shitholes in n new england, i sit not far from one as we speak, but the hit ratio is much higher up here generally, you dont get anything like an entire state covered in vinyl siding (r.i.)

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:45 (nine years ago) link

I miss the halcyon days of when mentioning Conn. made me think of all those wacky land boundaries and not horrible tragedies.

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Monday, 9 June 2014 14:48 (nine years ago) link

connecticut is easily one of the worst states in the world no offense anyone

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:49 (nine years ago) link

dn/ac (darraghmac), Monday, 9 June 2014 14:56 (nine years ago) link

also CT has some pretty rural areas, sherman is a cute little town iirc that felt pretty similar to the berkshire towns in MA like stockbridge and great barrington. went to wedding there a few years ago

marcos, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:57 (nine years ago) link

omg stop trying to make connecticut happen

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:58 (nine years ago) link

ha, i feel like i have to justify it, if only for myself. my wife's folks live there and there is a 30% chance we will end up there too

dn/ac (darraghmac), Monday, 9 June 2014 15:04 (nine years ago) link

well, kind of? New Bedford is like a seedier version of Gloucester with worse restaurants and a pretty cool whaling museum

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Monday, 9 June 2014 15:05 (nine years ago) link

otm it's way seedy

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Monday, 9 June 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Monday, 9 June 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

dn/ac (darraghmac), Monday, 9 June 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

tho I guess I can see why he moved, given the facts

dn/ac (darraghmac), Monday, 9 June 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

Gloucester can be pretty seedy too though. Someone in a bar there once stole my shoes.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Monday, 9 June 2014 15:09 (nine years ago) link

I like it even though I'm still bitter about the shoe incident.
