yes the internet has truly eradicated the age-old problem of teenagers having impressionable underdeveloped minds

it's been years since i've read any creepypasta, but i still treasure that period of time in 2010 when people started re-writing the most overexposed stories as grim parables from communist russia.

i remember being at 6th grade science camp trying to talk a kid out of sneaking out of his cabin in the middle in the night to go out in to the woods and whisper "six six six" (which would mean satan would immediately swallow him in to hell for eternity)

That's far better than most. A thunderstorm is rolling in and I am sitting by an open window, so a cold breeze actually and factually ran up my neck as I was reading that, which definitely added to the experience.

are the people giving advice just playing along with the story?

Some people will be playing along like it's an ARG, some people are just stupid.

chikungunya manatee (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 20 July 2014 20:44 (nine years ago) link

iiuc, the real danger posed by the basilisk is that it might convince ppl to take actions expressing loyalty to this evil AI - not unlike those girls who were doing the bidding of the slender man, obv the threat of the puzzle is what it might convince readers of, not of an actual basilisk. or at least that's why i'm assuming it was censored - it could have a debilitative (and violent producing) effect on ppl who might find it convincing.

Mordy, Sunday, 20 July 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

things sure did work out for those slender man girls

to be fair nobody was gonna recognize the actual costume--the theme in the house was Dali, everyone was a character from a Dali painting or what have you--but the fact that i was universally regarded as slenderman was remarkable. the best was the 8 year old who walked up and said "i met you in the woods once!"

This was the first creepypasta I ever came across, and it's still my favourite. Obviously it hits the sort of buttons (vague memories of childhood TV shows, kids' TV being inadvertently creepy) that are easy to manipulate, but IMO the rhythm is really good, it never reveals too much at a time, and never goes over the top.
