I played the new one a bunch the other day. Not terribly cutscene heavy (they aren't very long anyways) and incredibly fun! Good combat! I didn't get very far, snuck into the first castle, but the set pieces were all pretty impressive!

I haven't played a Wolfenstein since 3D but this was lots of fun. You can do stealth if you want but you can also blast your way through like Rambo.

one month passes...

played the an hour or so of the newest wolfenstein but it just seems like dumb shmup stuff, all combat no room to do anything else. not awful but not that great, was expecting something more stealthlike and tense. this was the opening level/first castle thing though, does it change after this?

someone posted a cutscene involving Jimi Hendrix that convinced me that I will play this ridiculous thing someday

isnt the first level almost like a framing device in that everything after is very different

anonanon, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 04:50 (nine years ago) link

ah great, i'll persist with it awhile in that case

The first level is a training level pretty much! Don't judge the game on that (although if you don't find it fun you might not find the rest of the game fun)

I'm glad to read this. I had the same worry as, like NI, I've only played that first castle. I mean, it was fine, but if the game is 12 hours of that I'll be disappointed. I've been reassured (here and from a friend) that isn't the case, fortunately.

i persevered with this (at time of posting above i was a mere minute away from finishing that first level) but it just isn't grabbing me. can't work out what separates meh games like this and watchdogs, from not conceptually dissimilar but incredible games like far cry 3 and sc: blacklist

well-honed mechanics?

all above got well-reviewed though, plenty of fans on here so it's maybe just me. guess i find wolfenstein just real dumb, bogstandard shootemup with a tacked-on stealth element. and watchdogs just has so much added crap it becomes exhausting to wade through to get to the 'fun'

I had more fun playing Wolfenstein than FC3, personally. I really felt everything that supposedly added "depth" just had this value-added feel that was really lame. I would have enjoyed the game EXACTLY as much if it was nothing but the base assaults, one after another.

I was disappointed in Wolfenstein that there wasn't a completely satisfactory BFG type gun. That seems like such a big part of old-school shooters, the one gun where you get it and it's OH SHIT IT'S ON NOW YOU FUCKERS

a fully maxed-out LKW is pretty satisfactory

and man i like the first level more than most of them, only one where you get an SMG

is this game an on-rails type ish or open world like other bethesda stuff

very linear. they mix it up with a bit of 'walk around, talk to this guy, get this, do that' but its mostly hoops you jump through for the next gun fight. And the gun fights just aren't that fun, think that's what makes it a let down. like it has a whole perk system, but none of them seem to add anything fun either.

the neogaf fps snobs all love it tho

the lack of smg is a bit of a bummer I will admit. mitigated somewhat if you dual-wield the three-shot pistols and spam the triggers

one year passes...

Is New Order worth $9 in the Flash sale? More importantly, is it worth 49 gigs on my rapidly filled PS4 hard drive?

new order is genuinely fantastic - go for it!

Yes. Had a lot more fun w/ this than I did with most of the more hyped AAA shit that came out around that time.

two years pass...

After I pulled the plug on "Sekiro" I wanted to clear my mind with something a lot less taxing, so I picked "New Order." I've never played a single "Wolfenstein" game before, but this is pretty good ott exploitation escapism. Runs really well, and you can see it setting the stage for "Doom," which rules.
