it's amazing
almost a carnival atmosphere
in spite of a resounding zero tie-in celebratory deals
actually maybe premiere maison baguettes are 2/$3
but yeah wild times

will it's on parc at fairmount, across the street. whenever i see stores w/francophone mention of TAPIS i always think TAPIRS, & it's next to a tapir store, go grocery shopping & grab a capybara on yr way out

a strange man (mh), Monday, 26 May 2014 22:08 (nine years ago) link

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 26 May 2014 23:20 (nine years ago) link

only in montreal does a store open or move and the management is like "booze for everyone!!" e.g., they were giving away samples of sapporo beer at the renovated loblaws in parc-ex the other day)

I went to Atom Heart (I know, music on physical media, lol me) on the way out of town and wanted to buy an album but they only had the promo listening station copy left, so they gave it to me for free! Buy something there.

k3vin k., Tuesday, 8 July 2014 16:46 (nine years ago) link

the city really needs the money, so it would be nice if you did

silverfish, Tuesday, 8 July 2014 19:49 (nine years ago) link

1/3 of it will just fund the lavish suburban homes of extended Calabrian or Sicilian families. Don't pay it.

two weeks pass...

btw is it weird to pay the bill at a bar/resto in montreal and expect to leave the tip on the table? I can understand just handing payment for bill+tip to the waiter, but I have done it both ways in different places.

I was out earlier in the week and some of my friends were out smoking so I paid for the beer, thinking I'd get a few more dollars from them for the tip when they returned, so I handed the waiter $50 for a $48 tab and he stuttered something about whether I understood that the bill didn't contain gratuity or something. I was like.. uh yeah? I was going to take my $2 plus whatever friends returned with and leave it for him.

Long story short, we left a good tip but I was weirded out

ultimate american sock (mh), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 15:18 (eight years ago) link

more often than not ppl just give the whole tip to the waiter here, i don't see a lot of leaving the tip on the table unless it's like a diner or w/e. but servers also see so many ppl a day that as lnog as you tipped in the end, they forgot immediately and it's nbd

Who M the best? (Will M.), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 15:44 (eight years ago) link

Yeah if the waiter is coming to your table with the bill and you pay it at your table that's where you leave the tip. But if you're going up to the bar or cash to pay that's where you leave/give the tip. I think now with portable debit machines, such confusion is eliminated... unless someone still pays tips in cash and the rest on card, which happens too I guess!

Mutek was so awesome this year even though I needed a lot of caffeine to get me through :)

We never forget. Never.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 16:32 (eight years ago) link

Oh if someone DOESN'T tip, never 4get

But if someone tips like 30 seconds later than you expected...

Who M the best? (Will M.), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 16:38 (eight years ago) link

that reminds me of an experience in chicago. i got lunch and had to go pay up at the counter to get change for the tip. i guess my waiter thought i was leaving the place and stiffing him because he muttered--fairly loudly--"asshole" in my general direction as he started to clean off my table. in fact as he was doing this i was heading back to the table to leave a cash tip but as soon as i heard that i just turned right around and left.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 16:46 (eight years ago) link

this dude was already super-awkward in a previous question we'd had so I will chalk it up to weirdness

assuming someone isn't going to tip when they have not yet left the establishment is a weird look imo

Old City
bagels

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 15 September 2015 20:50 (eight years ago) link

Come earlier than later! Winter will begin to hit in November and it's not the best time.

Be wary of Dr Morbius's advice: Old City (aka Old Port, Vieux Port, Old Montreal) is a lousy place to stay; it's fake, touristy Montreal. But nice to visit for an afternoon!

Stay in one of these neighbourhoods:
PLATEAU MONT-ROYAL, MILE END, PETITE ITALIE

Don't spend your money on pizza or sushi.

Do spend your money on pastries (St-Viateur Bagel, Mamie Clafoutis, Kouign Amann, Patrice Patissier, Paltoquet, Alati Caserta), ice-cream (Ripples, Kem Coba, Havre Aux Glaces), middle-eastern food (Alep, Damas, Sumac, Kaza Maza) and [relatively cheap] high-end dining (Salmigondis, Lawrence, Joe Beef, Foodlab, Lemeac [after 10pm special], Nora Grey).

Kazu is the only Japanese place worth your ducats.

Good beer at Dieu-du-Ciel and Vices Et Versa.

Coffee at Myriade/Dispatch (third wave) or Cafe Olimpico/Caffe Italia (Italian espresso).

Best cheap eats: Euro-Deli Batory, Thanjai, Kanbai, Pho Tay Ho, Romados, Chalet BBQ, Le Pick-Up.

while this thread is popped up i am wondering montreal food people: how does montreal stack up in the west indian food dep't vs. other cities? i have been kind of addicted to boom j's cuisine lately, a total gem in verdun, but my palette is unrefined and i want to know if anyone has had it/compared it to the rest of the city's options/compared it to other cities? they have some stinkers on their menu but for my money it's one of the best goat rotis i've ever had (and i used to live beside that place on parc that moved to st. laurent, jardin de cari i think it was called?)

Bouncy Castlevania (Will M.), Tuesday, 15 September 2015 21:14 (eight years ago) link

oops i am mixing up caraibe delite and jardin du cari. anyway both were good & i like boom j's more!
