"We Need a Resolution" -- without a doubt.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 9 November 2007 00:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I should probably vote in my own poll, huh. I need to listen to the album first, maybe three times, if I'm ever going to make up my mind.

The Reverend, Friday, 9 November 2007 00:18 (sixteen years ago) link

How fucking cool is "Extra Smooth"?

The Reverend, Friday, 9 November 2007 11:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 10 November 2007 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Ah, I'll vote for "Extra Smooth". Some of the others are just as good, but I have a feeling they'll get more love.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

(more proof that this album is NOT a part of "the ilx canon")

Tape Store, Sunday, 11 November 2007 00:28 (sixteen years ago) link

the ilx R&B canon is pretty small if it exists, but if it does this album is top 3 easy

i'm gonna go ahead and say i never totally understood "We Need A Resolution." seemed like a really odd choice for the album's lead single at the time and especially now.

good luck getting that w/ the keyshia cole album or whatever

deej, Sunday, 11 November 2007 01:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Forgot to vote but would've just added to the "We Need a Resolution" chorus.

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 11 November 2007 04:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the point is that there are many album tracks that are just as good as the singles. These are really boring results.

The Reverend, Sunday, 11 November 2007 06:02 (sixteen years ago) link

What did you expect though.

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 11 November 2007 06:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks ILM. I am no longer an optimist.

The Reverend, Sunday, 11 November 2007 06:26 (sixteen years ago) link

all my favorite aaliyah songs are on the previous album, plus "are you that somebody" which is the best
not that this isn't good i've been playing it a lot the past few weeks.

I'm surprised there was no love for "I Can Be" on this thread; maybe it gets lost from being near the end of the album? But the chorus has a terrific vocal hook, and the guitar grind and beats are ace too. Wikipedia calls this song "pop rock", but that seems wrong; if anything the vocal is a blues thing (I guess that comes off as rock to some people). Anyway, this song is great.

Euler, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I bought this when it came out but gave it a shamefully cursory listen and only stuck the singles on iTunes. The love displayed on this thread has made me think I should dig it up.

Plus, for people listening to all of their CDs in alphabetical order by either artist or album title, this should be at the front of the line, no?

yeah I'd vote for "I Can Be" if we did this again.

Euler, Sunday, 5 April 2009 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

If this poll was to happen again I'd have to vote Extra Smooth. It's just too damn fucking cool. The way it builds up the guy and the sucker punch of "nothing rude but way too short for me" kills me everytime. If only more songwriters were able to write this well, it doesn't condescend, it just says 'tone it down please' while the beat distracts you enough that it doesn't seem mean that she's pulling the rug from underneath the generic extra smooth character. (Sorry if that's nonsense, we can't all be fancy critics.)

And to add to all that talk upthread whether this album is part of the ilx canon, I think when 2k10 rolls around and we vote for the best album of the decade, I might end up giving this my #1 and hopefully it ends up pretty high on that list.

More than A Woman is a song that feels so insanely right, and it's got that upward lift that buoys the whole thing up so weightlessly.

man "we need a resolution" is really not at all the best song on this album by any reasonable measure

django weingart (samosa gibreel), Sunday, 23 May 2010 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

the competition is stiff, but "We Need a Resolution" really is that great of a song

The Reverend, Sunday, 23 May 2010 16:48 (thirteen years ago) link

like, it captures the paranoia of thinking your lover is cheating on you as well as any song since "Who Is He (and What Is He to You?)" but instead of just being on the verge of spazzing out like Bill Withers is, she's trying to make something productive out of the situation

The Reverend, Sunday, 23 May 2010 16:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i usually skip it, and i know it's good and i used to love it, but not what the album's about imo. in this case gorgeous dramatic, sultry rn'b trumps kinda dated stilted funky timbaland pop rap. "more than a woman" is a better example of that anyways.

django weingart (samosa gibreel), Sunday, 23 May 2010 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

"gorgeous dramatic, sultry rn'b trumps" is a perfect description of the song imo
