How come no one has said anything about Darius Rucker's Burger King commercial?

please tell me this one features big rock candy mountain as a lyrical bass--because if it does, we have a 1930s hobo folk song being updated (as disco hip hop crunk) to sell fast food, and if that is the case, it has reached bizzarre levels of postmodern new hisoricism.

I really want this sandwich and I wasn't able to get it two days ago and I forgot to get it sunday and I really want it now but I woke up early cuz I got drunk early last night and ARRRRRGH why can't I get this sandwich at 9am. I want it.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't care if Hootie blows the queen of england. I just want a tender crispy bacon cheddar ranch chicken sandwich!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:49 (nineteen years ago) link

its more complicated then that--its like, you know the poor had to dream about food (and liqour) because they could not get it, because big corprations are evil--but now burger king is sayiung not only do we love (camp/kitsch/nostalgia/artifice) we love you enough to provide you with cheap, available food t hat is good enough for your hobo ancestors to give up paradise for--but it will be served to you by a black man in a cowboy outfit.

(that said, its amazingly fotographed, and it caught me/gave me pangs)

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:54 (nineteen years ago) link

ARRRRRGH why can't I get this sandwich at 9am.

I thought Burger King was all about serving their entire menu morning, noon, and night?

Anyway, thanks JoB, for that link. I like that Subservient Chicken is in the background of the commercial, too!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 March 2005 14:06 (nineteen years ago) link

they are? i hope you're right cuz I'm headed over in an hour then! I haven't gone there in years.

You really don't. I was sold on the wonder of this sammich before Hootie & Brooke hopped on board. Hop off before it's too late.

I could be wrong, Anthony, but I thought they had a big ad campaign about that a few years back -- kind of a "your way, right away, whenever you fucking want it" sort of thing. I don't think it was McDonald's, since I think it was one of those things that Burger King came up with to further distinguish themselves from McD's.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 March 2005 14:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I could use a walk anyway. Full review in two hours.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 7 March 2005 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Yo, that Old Navy commercial with the girl getting all ecstatic about history class ROCKED! ("The Effects Of Feel-Good Fashion") Too bad it only aired for a week or three.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 7 March 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago) link

If it would be possible to describe a television commerical for a fast food chain featuring a musician whose music I have never cared for but I am sure is pleasant enough human being as "haunting" and/or "sppoky", then I would submit that this commerical is both "haunting" and "spooky". In a good sense.

chris besinger (chris besinger), Monday, 7 March 2005 14:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm sure there are people at Burger King that are acstatic that people are talking about Burger King once again. But even if you love Mr. Hootie, are you any more inclined to eat a Whopper?

(joke makes itself, don't bother.)

bacon ranch dressing that flows up to your knees
tumbleweeds of bacon
cheddar paves the streets
red onions make you weep
french fries grow like weeds

It is an excellent spot. But obviously a rip-off on those Morgan Fairchild "Old Navy" commercials.

Brooke Burke: "Come annnnn get it!"

Genius.

PB, Monday, 7 March 2005 18:37 (nineteen years ago) link

isn't there another burger king ad where some dude wakes up with the burger king in his bed and it's very awkward, there's this definite "did we have sex?" vibe hanging in the air?

xpost Anthony, I don't think he's "serving it to us,": neither re the girls, they're just showing you how good it can be, how to do it, provinding An Example To Others, as my church youth group leaders would say. Darius is the MC, and providing a little mmod music, a little travelin' music for the hungry Miccio et al, and for the food about to travel down the ol Alimentary Canal. (OK: he's a misntrel too, but in the classical at east as much if not more than the nasty recent sense)(we're all hos in some sense or other, or I am)

― budo jeru, Monday, August 14, 2023 12:25 AM (four months ago) bookmarkflaglink

update: there are multiple version of this song. i'm not sure which is the horrible and ubiquitous version i've been hearing all these years. also bob dylan wrote this song. crazy world.
