Yeah, I like "goth disco" as a genre name better, but Tim, you're totally OTM here. The Oliver Hacke 21:31 or whatever it's called is right in the zone, so's Lawrence, especially his last album. Don't forget Villalobos' remix of "One of Our Submarines." Even, possibly, some of Leandro Fresco's work, though I'll have to double check that.

No wonder I love all this stuff to death, given that goth was pretty much the first genre I could call mine (well, "goth" in the loosest definition, anyway - I was always very confused by Jesus and Mary Chain, as a wee lad, because they looked so goth while sounding so rock!).

for sure. Goth has gotten a little more on the extreme side recently with the lipstick and make up but even the cure was considered a goth band for a while.

I only heard "Tottentanz" recently (on Craig Richards' patchy but occasionally great new mix for Fabric)

My copy of this (Fabric 15: Tyrant (2 CDs)) arrived this morning. Just listening for the first time... sounds quite good.

I have to disagree, these bands have been appropriated by Goth and fit into the goth framework or project, but they exist on their own outside of it. The Cure are straight-up GOTH.

If we start disqualifying bands from being goth based on them being appropriated by goth but existing outside of it, we end up with Cleopatra bands making up the whole of the genre.

Just wanted to add to this list the incredible "Diamond Daze" album by Pantha Du Prince (out a couple months ago on Dial). It's a bit more gritty then the recent Lawrence album....

Pretty soon it will have its own section in XLR8R.

By the way Jesus and Mary Chain are so so so Goth, read the lyrics to Darkland.

I think I may have used it in The Wire. If I haven't yet, I will make sure to correct that post-haste. I'll do my best to include it in my Kompakt piece in XLR8R. We can consider it some kind of secret code. When ILMers see the word "micro-goth" in a print publication, that means the revolution has begun. (Ha, watch me turn up on some FBI watch list now.)

Have I mentioned that Jost remix of Turner's "After Work"? That's micro-goth, no doubt about it.

No! The Mary Chain and Joy Division were not goth bands. That's like saying the Shangri-Las were a goth band because they wrote about a song about young death. The Cure most definitely are goth.

Bands like the Mary Chain have a pure rock'n'roll heritage, whereas Goths seem to be some weird hybrid of rock and cabaret. I think it's the stageyness that is the difference. The Darkness are much more goth than Joy Divsion.

Pantha Du Prince "Glycerin" from his fucking amazing Diamond Daze record on Dial. I suppose that most of that album can be filed under Goth-House, but that track is a GOTH-HOUSE MASTERPIECE!!!!! (MIchael F Gill already noted PDP's record on 5/11/04, but i just wanted to add to his sentiments...and also gush about my favorite house track of the year)

I burned myself a sped-up mix of 'don't ya' so I can drop it in my current techno set. #1 single of 2005 so far no doubt. It was played by the hip-hop dj at the bar I was at on NYE (midnight song: Drop it like it's Hot) and I was surprised at how well the crowd knew it and how most everybody sang along.

Gill...i agree with you about it one-upping Lawrence's Absence of Blight. actually, i feel that the "possibly" is a "definitely". not to take anything away from lawrence though. the guy rules. no one bliss-drones out quite the way he does y'know?
