nah, they didn't have it (it's pennies on amazon tho'), they had 'architecture of reassurance' (not actually a doc, on reflection) and a newer one where he asked a bunch of people what they'd do if they had 3 months/a week/24 hours to live, which was funny.

I've seen Lavelle DJ twice. Decent, but admittedly samey sets. He's also a lot less cooler as a person than Shadow, after meeting them both repeatedly during my student years.

The first 3 tracks on Psyence Fiction are probably the most classic the record gets at any particular points, especially if you rewind the CD to the beginning and have fun with the snippets of popular hits that form the "real" intro.

Best non-album track is 'Garage Piano' from the old Headz 2a compilation. Trip hop Barabarella space trips are hard to beat.

Seriously though, back to Mike D's rap -- what do you think of his "story" of DJ Shadow and James Lavelle? As a narrative, I mean. Kind of thin, isn't it?

Wouldn't he have to be at least reasonably charismatic to get all these people to collaborate with him and pay attention? Also, am I the only one who occasionally gets a weird Lavelle vibe off of Pharrell whenever he brags about having his own shoes or talks about hanging out with Nigo?

I think 94-95 it was mostly Goldsworthy wasn't it. According to discogs it's Richard File (aka DJ Aura) and Lavelle (haha).

BTW : mo'wax r.i.p.

the new UNKLE stuff is on a different label, No Surrender, so i guess this is the final nail in the mo'wax coffin.

anyone heard the new material yet - the 2*7" was in the shops on monday, but very limited and so now gone, though all the tracks are to be on the new album so i wasn't that bothered despite the very nice packaging.

well you could ask him about his approach to remixing the Boredoms, I thought that was a fairly intersting matchup that doesn't get enough love.

Lavelle really opened my eyes some 8 years ago at Apolo Nitsa in Barcelona - taking me with him from Young MC to Incredible Bongo Band to aicd house to thundering techno in the space of 6 hours. I realize that's not so out of the ordinary these days, but at least for me, at that time, it was relevatory.

I kind of agree, but Portishead lyrics are helped by not being at least in part written by Mad Rick. I would take Gibbons on Third over any of the vocal performances on Psyence Fiction, personally.
