pretty hilarious daily show interview tonight

clotpoll, Thursday, 17 January 2008 07:44 (sixteen years ago) link

i hope the full, unedited 18 minute version gets posted somewhere. it was interesting seeing doughboy actually being confronted in person about how woefully stupid this book is. since he's pretty much chosen to ignore every valid written criticism as somehow not worth his time.

Evolution of religious bigotry

So basically

1) We are right to hate muslims
2) Liberals don't hate them enough
3) But they hate christians (who I don't actually like either but who are relatively harmless and help my team)
4) So we are also right to hate liberals

5) We are right to be suspicious of fish

A plaque with 'Shalom' written inside a Star of David would hardly attract notice; a plaque with 'Usury' written inside the same symbol would be an outrage.

yes, this is exactly the same thing and completely destroys the blood libel of the darwin fish.

But the most annoying aspect of the Darwin fish is the false bravado it represents. It's a courageous pose without consequence.

thank god nobody on the right has ever bought a bumper sticker, flag ribbon or magnetic american flag and just slapped it on their car.

Like so much other Christian-baiting in American popular culture, sporting your Darwin fish is a way to speak truth to power on the cheap.

speaking truth to power is just awful.

He so proud!

If you want a sense of how popular I am with the LA Times community, check out the (354 and counting) comments to my Obama national service column.

One small point in response (I know, I know: Why bother?). The 13th amendment lists involuntary servitude and slavery as different things. If they were the same, the founders wouldn't have wasted the ink repeating themselves.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 00:06 (fifteen years ago) link

A couple of days ago re a certain dead former Senator:

Am I saying that Helms became colorblind simply by virtue of being baptized into the Republican Party? Of course not. But he was pretty well constrained to the limits of what the GOP would allow. Nonetheless, conservatives have a heavier burden to speak clearly on these issues. But in response too Helms' death, we chose kindness over a more honest accounting.

I...I am moved.

And apologizes:

Just to stop the flow of e-mail, let me say it up here as well. Last night, writing in haste I referred to the authors of the 13th amendment as the "founders." Obviously, this was an error — the founders had moved on to better things by then. Not that the angry e-mailers will believe me, but it was merely a typing error. I did actually know that the amendment that ended slavery was written around the time, you know, slavery ended.

Obama the postmodernist

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:07 (fifteen years ago) link

oh fuckin fuck shitballs arschkrumeln that fucking clueless take on "postmodernism" drives me fucking insane

I know that's the point but when these fucking guys construct this massive strawman and call it postmodernism it really pisses me off

I say this as a guy who has no particular love for actual postmodernism

J0hn D., Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:36 (fifteen years ago) link

His smugness is the worst sin. "You guys don't GET postmodernism's `hidden agenda.' Lemme explain it for you nice and slow..."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:44 (fifteen years ago) link

it makes me so fucking crazy

"they're interested in how meaning is generated...what they're saying is that nothing has any meaning!" GAAAAAHHHHH YOU FUCK THEY CARE ABOUT MEANING MORE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE, IT'S LIKE THE ONLY THING THEY EVER THINK ABOUT

J0hn D., Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:50 (fifteen years ago) link

which is what makes them so fucking boring, which would be a valid critique, if you were actually interested in forming a valid critique instead of fleecing dumbshits for their twenty bucks

As he should be. Jon rips him a new one.

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I think Stewart actually points out really well what bothers me about Goldberg. He uses these terms, like Liberal or Fascist, as though they refer to real definitive Platonic forms. Like when he suggests that there's a problem with Hillary calling herself progressive, and Stewart asks him whether he thinks Hillary is using that as code to align herself with "racist" progressives. Obv language is used by different people in different ways, but Goldberg doesn't really understand that.

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 16:16 (fifteen years ago) link

That postmodernism article is truly horrible, especially as the Bush administration has been so actively postmodernist (in the sense that Goldberg "articulated"), e.g. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality."

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-goldberg12-2008aug12,0,6742318.column

The invasion of Georgia elicited a wan written communique instead of the sort of exciting rhetoric we've come to expect from his make-believe presidency. But he did make it in front of the cameras the next day for a rally celebrating his vacation in Hawaii. He promised "to go body surfing at some undisclosed location."

During Obama's make-believe presidency, we've heard about bold action, about the courage to talk to dictators. When faced with a real "3 a.m. moment," Obama -- who boasts about 200 foreign policy advisors, broken into 10 subgroups -- proclaims, "I'm going to get some shave ice."

Wtf, Jonah? How do you call it a make-believe presidency, and then complain he's on vacation at the SAME TIME? ARE YOU A FUCKING IDIOT?
