i still say priceline is best bet cause you choose stars in addition to price. i once got a nice room at hilton for like $100 during a holiday weekend.

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:48 (sixteen years ago) link

i did that with hotwire once and was stuck down in the financial district!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:53 (sixteen years ago) link

from what i've heard anecdotally, priceline might get you a good deal in some pretty good hotels, but they usually stick you in their least attractive rooms

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:55 (sixteen years ago) link

also, it's not uncommon to find cheap hotel rooms in big cities over summer or winter weekends when locals go out of town

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:57 (sixteen years ago) link

through the hotel itself

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:57 (sixteen years ago) link

yikes! priceline lets you pick neighborhood(s), which can be helpful but you have to pay attn to the boundaries of the neighborhoods you choose (my mom got a hotel by the u.n. once when she picked "midtown east" which i know isn't THAT far a walk from trains, but she does not know the city, gets nervous, etc.).

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 03:59 (sixteen years ago) link

why would locals affect hotels? they're not staying in them!

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:00 (sixteen years ago) link

they don't, necessarily, but they're indicators of how attractive the destination is at that particular time

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:01 (sixteen years ago) link

comparatively-speaking

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:01 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah my hotel was supposedly in "soho"!! it was down like on wall st! v strange :\

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:05 (sixteen years ago) link

that's totally subjective, though... i think in general ppl want to get away for the weekend, whether that means a city person going to a nice b&b in the country or a suburbanite visiting the 'big city' for their long weekend. i don't think that says anything about how attractive the destination itself is, just who's going to be there. i.e., when the locals get out the tourists come in, but don't they usually call that a peak time and jack UP the price?

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:06 (sixteen years ago) link

that was an xp i did not mean the definition of soho was subjective ;)

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:07 (sixteen years ago) link

hahhahaha i was gonna say...next yr gonna be claiming jersey city as part of soho...

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:07 (sixteen years ago) link

yes and i also live in the e. village lol

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:08 (sixteen years ago) link

my mom got a hotel by the u.n. once when she picked "midtown east"

well that's technically correct unless they want to get down to the "tudor city" level of specificity

gabbneb, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:10 (sixteen years ago) link

yes, it is correct. i didn't say it wasn't, but when someone from out of town thinks 'midtown' they forget the outer avenues because they're not really familiar with the area and are thinking of midtown east as grand central, etc. hence, checking the map first before selecting neighborhood so you realize/remind yourself that you may not be 1 block from 'everything' when you pick midtown.

tehresa, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Hotel 31! Bargain, and where I'm staying again later this summer.

Also, the Chelsea Star near MSG. When I stayed almost a couple of years ago they were undergoing fitting new apartment rooms. They let me stay in one of them at no extra cost, cheap as anything.

Ste, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:40 (sixteen years ago) link

kevin, you were maybe at the off soho suites...?

Wow, I stayed at the Sohotel on Broome St. in 2003 for about $100/night in 2003, and now it's $200+ a night on average!? Anyway, I kinda liked it.

My in-laws are coming to NY for a week in late September and RS and I will be joining them for part of that time. Since there will be 5 of us total and for a whole week I was wondering if a week long apt rental might be the most economical option. Does anyone know anything about this type of thing and have any recs?

BUMP

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 13:25 (fifteen years ago) link

second home on second avenue, maybe. it's a very small b&b kind of place in the east village. they have a couple of suite-type rooms that sleep 2-5 people, and prices are supposed to be very reasonable.

i don't have any specific recs for apartment-letting services, although there are a quite a few of them according to google.

lauren, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 13:56 (fifteen years ago) link

People put apartments to sublet on craigslist all the time!

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:11 (fifteen years ago) link

also, a lot of the agencies put their sublets on craigslist as well as their own sites.

with parents involved, i think i'd feel a bit better going through an agency and having an office to contact in case anything goes wrong. plus you don't have to worry about an illegal sublet.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 05:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Hotel 17 is awesome. I love that place.

But watch out for the clanging radiators.

The Paisley (shop) Window Pane (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 12:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Ha.

We strolled back past the Iroquois hotel (where we first stayed, clanging rads and all), but it's now poshed up to Algonquin standards.

I take it the Gershwin hotel is still, um, the Gershwin?
