the beauty of this game is in its disregard for realism. the gameplay makes no reference to the limitations of the human body. it is entirely abstract and shows that the fps interface does not really have any necessary connection to human combat situations. the interface has nothing to do with that.

mouselook is the only way to play this game! i love how this feature was something that had to be discovered, only to be set as the default control scheme for pretty much every fps to follow.

Quake i was/is the best FPS, if not the best game evah !

There were some excellent level paks by the mod-scene as well, particularly the mexx series.

oooh, i suddenly wish i wasn't a mac-convert :-(

Quake is easily among the greatest games ever. I like that people are still improving at QW like 9 years after its release. It is truly the manliest man's game, a timeless tradition of strength and honor.

...

I do prefer CPMA, but that borrows a lot from QW anyway.

Field Report 009779

I just passed the first set of missions and am on a castle-world. Quad damage is nice -- thanks guys. But I have to ask -- is the shambler all you got to say?

See you,
Big Nick

What other games are as simple and satisfying as Quake I and II? Recommendations please!

I don't want to talk to villagers, I don't want to use a bow, I don't want to choose from 25 different power up abilities. Just give me a gun and I'm good to go.

There are a couple older guys at my work who have been playing this nearly every lunch break for (from what I've been told) the last 15 years. Same map every time.

unreal tournament (99 or 04, not 03 or "3"), painkiller, serious sam... half-lifes 1 and 2 both open with ten or fifteen talky plotty minutes but then become about shooting monsters in hallways (or gorgeous pseudo-open spaces deftly pretending not to be hallways). hl2 is prob the best pace and variety you're gonna get from the single-player FPS experience; UT99 and UT2004 are more flexible, more variable, prob mechanically better, and 99 in particular has a huge awesome mod library, but their singleplayer is just multiplayer with bots--no quakestyle castles or military bases to penetrate/explore, no excitement at the sight of a new kind of monster.

if you haven't played doom recently you'd prob be surprised how good the level design is, and how scary it can be. play it with a keyboard and no mouse: one hand to move and strafe, the other to turn and shoot. aiming up/down isn't actually necessary: primitive, but pure. the invisible monsters will still make you curse.

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 23 February 2014 19:00 (ten years ago) link

lol at me saying hl2 has the best variety and that ut is more variable. ut has lots of settings you can use to change the parameters of a match, is what i meant: gravity, weapon types, bot difficulty, mods, etc.. hl2 is a ride that knows when to change itself up.

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 23 February 2014 19:02 (ten years ago) link

painkiller is about shooting demons in hell, tho, an important component of the doom/quake experience since largely discarded.

Borderlands

there are power ups and stuff but it's a piss easy distraction to manage, apart from that it's all shooting all the time with guns guns and guns

every time you sneer at "white boys with guitars" a Ramone dies (onimo), Tuesday, 25 February 2014 14:55 (ten years ago) link

i really like Borderlands but I think the looty-weapon-hoarding-vending machine aspect doesn't put it in line w/old style FPSes. like you are constantly bombarded with weapons to check out, most of which are worse than the one you're holding

Nhex, Tuesday, 25 February 2014 14:56 (ten years ago) link

I tended to stick with 1 x powerful pistol, 1 x decent fire rate automatic, 1 x high damage sniper with elemental and 1 x shotgun and just sell everything though you do occasionally needed to level up guns to match enemies so I suppose it doesn't quite fit the bill.

Max Payne 3 maybe? Bullet timey stuff aside it's all running and shooting and picking up whatever weapons are lying around.

Very happy to hear, as Quake is all-time and I've more-or-less randomly recently acquired Borderlands 2 and (via deep, deep discount Rockstar sale on PSN, FYI) Max Payne 3.

I always thought Quake 3 was the best of the series. Although I probably played Quake 1 the most of any game, other than StarCraft. Both popular during my one year of college. No wonder I flunked out.

q3 is cool cuz it's the most abstract; this otm observation abt q1 upthread

the beauty of this game is in its disregard for realism. the gameplay makes no reference to the limitations of the human body. it is entirely abstract and shows that the fps interface does not really have any necessary connection to human combat situations. the interface has nothing to do with that.

goes x1000 for q3. the iconic level for me is the one that's just a handful of platforms with jump pads floating in space, and people launch rocket barrages as they hurtle past each other like pingpong balls. i could play that level forever. even UT levels like MORPHEUS (the tops of three adjacent skyscrapers that are so tall see that the gravity up there's really low see) were more beholden to reality than that one.

difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 25 February 2014 19:37 (ten years ago) link

enjoying 'hard reset', very straight forward fps. reminds me of some of those games. writing is terrible but the action is fun. guess its pc only though.

bnw, Tuesday, 25 February 2014 19:49 (ten years ago) link

DFH: of course that level was "The Longest Yard", aka Q3DM17. Always glad they put that level in the early tests, definitely the most fun. Both Q3A and UT at the time were going for a throwback to the '80s arcade era, with the bright colors, big fonts, fast unrealistic movement and gravity (though both still slower than the original Quake) and now we're looking at them as retro.

Nhex, Tuesday, 25 February 2014 19:59 (ten years ago) link

original quake was sooooo much fun. 1996 was the year I had a new computer, got real unlimited internet access, and was unemployed over the summer when the shareware version/first act came out. I think I spent that whole summer hiding in my parents' basement playing Quake and talking on irc.

Before there was an OpenGL accelerated version of Quake, there was a version that was optimized for Rendition Verite graphics chips called VQuake
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYXF_VhAhlI

My dark secret is that I still have most of the parts of a computer stashed away in my basement with my old Verite card, waiting for a day when I will once again play this superior version of Quake

I played a lot of the original Quake (and some awesome LAN parties for Q3 Arena) but never liked it as much as DooM. I think the color scheme and darkness of the whole thing turned me off. It's so muddy and brown it makes Doom II look like a Lisa Frank game.

But I was always glad I got it because it came on a CD that included Doom, Doom II, Wolfenstein 3D, etc. and that was one of the best gaming deals ever!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 27 February 2014 03:55 (ten years ago) link

played a bunch of quake i because of this thread (using the "quakespasm" engine on ubuntu and data files legitimately obtained from a totally vintage and manual-accompanied quake cd i bought at everyday music in portland or for 95c and on which even the fred meyer sale sticker i dread removing looks 90s) and now i regret mentioning half-life upthread because i'd forgotten the speed of this game, there is nothing like it except stuff that is explicitly trying to be like it (like serious sam or UT or lol daikatana). iirc duke nukem 3d moves at something close to this pace but something makes just moving through it feel less visceral and hurtling--maybe the fact that it's sprites on a grid instead of a "real" 3d environment; maybe just because of the way quake SWINGS you from left to right when you strafe, like yr in a hydraulic chair at an arcade.

it is indeed pretty much the origin of Shooter Brown in all its shades, much less colorful than doom; and i didn't mod it with any new textures but i did turn the screen resolution all the way up to the present day, so it looks rly splotchy, but i still like the monster designs and the ominous skies. the chainsaw/grenade-launcher-wielding ogre is a stoner metal kid image for the ages. what's really hideous is the weapons: an assortment of malformed grey dongs. but i love them mechanically; there are so few of them but (pace the manual, which claimed that as soon as i picked up the double shotgun i'd stop using the only gun in the game that can snipe) none of them ever stop having a use. and the game's so stingy with the nails that just using a burst feels like some kind of treat.

fuck a shambler obviously but fuck even more those upgraded knights that start appearing in episode 2, the ones that shoot fireballs, because on nightmare difficulty they come at you in hordes.

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 10:27 (ten years ago) link

Otm about the speed. Even on my 1998 hardware, quake 2 was one quick game.

been playing a lot of quake 3 in the middle of the night. was an unreal tournament partisan for years and poss still am but have come in my old age to appreciate simplicity. q3 is the platonic deathmatch experience even if that's all it does: carmack, alone at last, an obsessive ascetic. abstract fps physics; environments that could only exist as fps levels, are trying to be nothing else. real, evil cyberspace. (btw i tend to have a much lower ping to q3 servers than to ut or ut04 servers; gonna go ahead and attribute this to carmack too.) i don't know who the people are that i'm playing with--how old they are. i can't imagine there's a lot of 13-year-old boys playing quake 3 in 2015, and yet the conversation is just like i remember.

calstars sorry idk if yr still looking but here's a list of modern q1 engines (of variable faithfulness to the original) that just need a few (copyrighted) data files from the CD to run. hit me up if you want, or also they can be found in the uh usual places.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 24 July 2015 15:05 (eight years ago) link

on sale on steam this weekend btw, cuz of quakecon, but still a lil pricey (at $13) because of its reputation and because they make you buy team arena too, which prob isn't rly necessary. (like q1 my copy was a record store used bin buy, for something like fifty cents.)

playlists of pensive swift (difficult listening hour), Friday, 24 July 2015 20:17 (eight years ago) link

i basically can't beat anyone online tho. i'd like to blame my ping (it runs a lil high here on the imperial fringe) but sometimes i see people with identical limitations doing a lot better (tho i never see them win). suspect the player base has boiled down to the elite.

two years pass...

Playing a lot of the various old-school Doom games on PS3 lately, which are super great but also making me miss Quake so hard (I somehow missed out on the Dooms back in my Quake/Duke Nukem days). And now I'm listening to SAWII and recalling fondly that this was my go-to soundtrack for Quake sessions. So perfectly ethereal and creepy. I don't know that I ever even listened to the Reznor score, tbh.

Here Comes The Brain Event (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 19:44 (six years ago) link

I thought about that score not too long ago -- I am not sure if he's gotten to it yet, but it's set to be released on vinyl. Because it's 2018 and that's how we reissue stuff, I guess.

Obviously the best way is to put the CD in and immediately skip track one (data track)
