Did you see that crazy catch that Berkman made out on that hill a year or so ago? That was awesome.

I think it is a homage to Ebbetts Field in Brooklyn that had an angle built into one of it's walls.

earlnash, Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:06 (twenty years ago) link

down the left field line in fenway where the seats jut out to meet the monster there is a garage door that is used by the groundskeeping crew. every so often a ball will rocket off the monster with some english and spin back towards that garage door where it will hit the recess of the 10 or 12 foot door. invariably the left fielder will sprint towards the wall then run back to play the carom off the monster only to have to charge the wall a second time when the ball ping pongs off the garage door frame.

it's really great fun to watch.

All of the recent parks are hitters joints except that huge park in Detroit. What were they thinking, that place is a cave. Is it to balence out for the rest of the league? I know, it is to protect that good Tiger pitching.

The ugliest park in baseball is that piece of crap in Tampa. The Devilray uniforms are also terrible, which is saying something because they have like nine different ones they use.

that 420 foot power alley at pac bell is totally messed up but i love it when i right hander just burns one out there, totally peeling off into the corner where it gets wedged into some fence partition... it's an instant triple even for jt snow.

in general, i find the parks w/ the aluminum garage doors kind of entertaining when a blast smacks into 'em w/ a thud.

Re: Wrigley ivy...

Baseball sticks in vines on bleacher wall ... Double

This occasionally gives the outfielder a (figurative) "out"; often, long drives to the wall become triples, especially if the batter's got much speed. But if the ball lodges in the vines, the fielder can raise his hands in surrender, even if he can see the ball perfectly well, and the batter is limited to a double.

Funny, a ball stuck in the not-yet-leafing ivy against the Reds a couple weeks back. The ball was clearly visible, and Adam Dunn raised his hands and the 2B umpire pointed to the ball and let (I think) Aramis Ramirez run around the bases for probably the only triple he'll ever get.

brian daubach: the todd benzinger of his day?

discuss!

j.q. higgins, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:20 (nineteen years ago) link

no way, benzinger could at least field his position.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Benzinger had one of the better Berman nicknames, IMO.

Todd "Mercedes" Benzinger

Man, I had completely forgotten about that guy.

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:27 (nineteen years ago) link

he was one of the 3 rookies the bosox had in 1987 (along with ellis burks and mike greenwell [who wasn't really a rookie but got his first taste of regular p.t. that year]) who were going to lead the red sox to the post season for the next decade.

didn't quite work out that way.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:31 (nineteen years ago) link

B-b-b-b-b-but 1990!

How Lou Gorman thought having a pitching staff w/ Clemens, Mike Boddicker, and toejam would do a damn thing boggles my parchessi.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

1990 still had juicy brucey hurst as new england's most popular southpaw mormon. my favorite lou gorman-ism from that time was "where would we play willie mcgee?" hmmm, i dunno, THE OUTFIELD?!??!?

then he winds up SIGNING mcgee 5 years and 15 knee operations later. typical bosox.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Cincinnatti also gave Benzinger at bat after at bat thinking this guy is going to be a star, but it didn't work out any better.

earlnash, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually, Hurst wasn't on the '90 team! (Was he?) He was either traded to or signed by the Padres prior to 1990. (Right?)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:26 (nineteen years ago) link

goddamn you're right! wow, i thought he was around a lot longer than he was. he was gone from boston after going 18-6 in '88.

he ended his career in texas of all places. 8 games, 8 games started less than 40 innings pitched and an era over 7.10. a sad end to the ace of the bosox postseason in '86.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Notable starters on the 1990 Red Sox include:

- Roger Clemens (duh)
- Mike Boddicker
- Dana Kiecker
- Kevin Morton (one of a looong line of post-Clements BoSox pitching prospects that never panned out) (see also: Paxton Crawford - better stuff than Pedro!; Brian Rose; Aaron Sele, to a lesser extent)

I like how the ILBBall threads are all mixed up & stuff re: the original topics and the various deviations therein.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 00:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I had Paxton Crawford on a rotisserie team one year.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 00:52 (nineteen years ago) link

don't forget vaughn eshelman (sp?), brian rose, tomo ohka, and the immortal jin ho cho.

god, did anyone in the history of mlb get more second chances than brian rose?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Matt Young to thread!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:41 (nineteen years ago) link

for the record, i'll listen to no discussion of the bosox late 80's "phenoms" that doesn't include big sam horn! another favorite slugger and a cornerstone of the why not? o's teams of frank robinson.

j.q. higgins, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:43 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't think sam horn was ever considered a "phenom" so much as there was a lot of hope attached to him. it was obvious that he could hit a ton (i remember reading a column from bob ryan or dan shaughnessy about horn hitting a ball further than they thought humanly possible in spring training) but it was making contact that was the problem (as evidenced by his 323 k's in 1040 career ab's). there was always the hope that he could be the next dave kingman or gorman thomas, i'm sure the sox would've settled for rob deer but after hitting .148 back to back in 88 and 89 he was gone.

now if you want to talk phenom's then you've just got to mention phil plantier and mo vaughn, i was sure the were the next incarnation of the gold dust twins from 15 years earlier.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:53 (nineteen years ago) link

BY THE WAY: regarding the zero sum guy w/ the most second chances in MLB history - Bruce Chen just got traded AGAIN. His current dossier includes:

- Atlanta
- Philly
- Boston
- Toronto
- Mets
- Cincy
- Houston
- Montreal
- and now Baltimore!!

Hope he likes crab.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, phenom is a bit much, i guess. rob deer...that takes me back.

j.q. higgins, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:26 (nineteen years ago) link

i can remember a point in the late '80's/ early '90's when rob deer was on the bench whenever clemens pitched because he was 0-22 against clemens with 20 k's.

man i wish there was a team in mvp2004 with nothing but sluggers who either hit it a mile or missed it completely. deer, gorman thomas, dave kingman, pete incaviglia, sam horn, tony armas, ron kittle, etc.

Plus I love what you've done w/ the place, gygax - is that sponge painting? Tres chic!

:-\

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:01 (nineteen years ago) link

The funny thing about guys like Deer and Incaviglia is that they were absolute freaks for striking out as much as they did, whereas today there are bunches of hitters that are that bad about the K (and a bunch play for Cinci).

Recent pitching phenoms that are hanging on as long relief dregs:

Todd Van Poppel (AKA the next Nolan Ryan)
Cal Elred (AKA the next Tom Seaver)
Pat Mahomes (AKA the next Doc Gooden)

earlnash, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:45 (nineteen years ago) link

"Pat Mahomes" could be it's own Berman Nickname.

Morehead State, who plays against Illinois today and is a popular upset pick, has maybe the weirdest baseball field in the country. Haven for lefties. Apparently they're unable to push the right field fence back because there's a species of endangered salamanders living there? pic.twitter.com/c3VAD5Ihrw
