I paid for my copy of "Cubase", fwiw. I'm not interested in warez, others may be, that's up to them.

Good for you, however i'm willing to bet alot of the best underground indie electronic music was made using "aquired" versions of software.

Um, but that's hardly the point is it.

I'd just like to point out that no musician has ever ever paid for a piece of music software, ever. big record companys maybe minor/medium indies NO WAY.

That's complete and utter bullshit. I've made a living for the last 6 years selling music software & hardware. More than half of our clients our hobbyists, many of whom are sick of the instability & dodginess of warez. You can spend half your life looking for a crack that may or may not crash your computer, freeze up your DAW, and cause compatibility fuckups with your other plug-ins, or you can just buy the fucking official version, knowing that it will work!

Okay so I was exagerating, I was just pointing out that for a many a penniless artists warez has been a way into the industry, I'm sure that once the money is rolling in they all go out and buy licenses.

And yes all warez is dodgy and unstable, just keep telling everyone that.

There's some truth in this, but I've known just as many unsigned, independent musicans who do, in fact, save their pennies & get a legit program to start.

And yes all warez is dodgy and unstable, just keep telling everyone that.

It may seem like I'm towing the company line here, but I've lost count of the times I've been hired to troubleshoot someone's PC because "dude, nothing works", only to find that every app is a crack: DAWs take ages to load, plug-ins glitch out or even crash the host, and the whole OS feels like it's about to lock up any second. The biggest problem of all with warez is that they're like potato chips - most people can't eat just one, so when they download an app, & it kinda works, they go apeshit & grab as many free programs as they can. That's when I get panic calls.

goldwave

tantrum pretty otm. i think i've seen 50/50 in my experiences. i've got a lot of friends who use cracks, but i've got a lot of friends who also insist on buying the real shit so they can basically advertise that they have the real shit if they're recording somebody.

kinda depends on the attitudes and stuff.

audacity rules. goldwave can be really good. kristal is also decent. (it's at very least as good as ACID and some of those lower end general consumer packages.)

just DL'd Audacity, and while it looks quite nice, I'm having latency issues with live monitoring. basically, i like monitoring my live sound through whatever FX etc i can use. On Live i can get it down to

I wound up buying zero-x seamless looper. It was cheap, and it works very well! The auto-loop find especially is very good.

Sorry for the lazy thread revive, but I figured there wasn't much point making a new one for a silly question that could be answered so quickly.

Does anyone know of a good mp3 to wav batch conversion program, so I can convert all my loops in mp3 format into wave so Reaktor can see them? I've tried googling and all that, but a) all the results want me to buy something and b) they're probably all full of spyware.

Alternatively, I don't suppose anyone here uses Reaktor and knows if it does infact support mp3 files? That'd be ideal.

Oh, no worries - I used the Winamp "disk output" plugin to do it! Worked a treat.

The Reaktor question still stands though, as this would be brilliant.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Friday, 16 June 2006 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Reaktor doesn't support MP3s as of the last update I have. I wish more audio progs would.

So, my new computer came with Windows 10, and so far the only software casualty is my dear, beloved old copy of CoolEdit 96, which does load in Win10, but is just glitchy AF - doesn't think I have enough RAM to save "Undo," and yet sometimes undoes OLD actions after I've done something else to the files... etc. So, I guess it's time I looked around for something else, ideally as similar as possible to the CE96 interface/tool as possible. MAINLY I use it for trimming down loops to just-so, and some occasional normalizing and basic effects. Is there anything out there with anything of that old-school, bells-and-whistles-free software style?

you might be able to run cooledit96 under a virtual machine with an older version of windows. I think virtualbox is free?

Wavosaur is pretty basic but still supports VST effects.

Audacity

Thanks, y'all. Just downloaded Wavosaur and feeling good about it, seems super low-impact. Doesn't even install anything! My kind of software.
