I wish there were more good pop groups started by older dudes, as it would make me less apprehensive about aging. Hopefully I will still be rockin' out in 20 or 30 years. I would like to think that I will be the gruff, idiosyncratic, but lovable "father" of my local scene.

Yeah, well, maybe so, but the question was about oldsters *STARTING* bands, not oldsters being in long-running bands.

Thank you Alex--yeah, to clarify, the emphasis is on STARTING a group while in middle-age. Yeah, I saw some oldsters playing pop music last night, but they weren't no tourin' act that have been together for years and years, they are a local band who haven't been around for that long (a few years, maybe). Yeah, but.. more answers!

What difference does it make at what age you start a group? Judge music by the music not by the age of the people playing it.

In a fit of righteousness, I gave up making pop music before I hit my twenties.

This is not entirely true but it can be a bit true if you want.

Also, Birdyak was started by one man in his 50s, one in his 60s, and a man and a woman in their 70s, and they ROCKED. (The oldest one, Bob Cobbing, passed away a couple of weeks ago.)

Oh no! Bob cobbing passed away. that's really sad to hear. I got a snipet of them in action in a lol coxhill double CD on emanem (electrifying!). also heard some of his stuff on the sound art box set (revue OU).
