i remember running out to an atm at 3:30 in the morning because i was on a late night record store spree. afterparty in record store = me in poor house.

I don't care about the Nuggets boxes; still listen to them on vinyl, though I've never been cool enough to own the original LP (favorite volumes from the 1984-1985 Rhino versions are Vols. # 1, 2, 6 and 12.) Rhino's Frat Rock LP from 1987 may well be the greatest single album in the history of the world. Wish I still own my Back From the Grave LPs; favorites when I did were #s 1, 2 and 4.

Best CD comp (one disc) I own is the 26-song Uptight Tonight: The Ultimate '60s Garage Collection, on Ace-distibuted Big Beat UK, from 2005.

number one is my favorite, with alarm clocks, one way streets, etc.

it collects, like, the first five pebbles LPs, but there is different stuff on the box too. you would have to be a freaky pebblesologist to sort it all out. i usually just buy random pebbles comps on disc or vinyl when i see them used.

so, if you are new to garage rock, just dig in! don't worry so much about the best comps. just buy whatever you can afford. i don't think there are very many or ANY 60's garage comps that i would tell you NOT to buy if you saw them somewhere. there is usually something to love on even the dodgiest boot out there. but, yeah, teenage shutdown, back from the grave, the earlier girls in the garage comps (later i think they get into lounge/ye ye territory which is still cool but you know...), the list really is endless.

and, hey, if you got lots of money and like brit psych + garage, the rubble boxes are back in print and they are worth all the tea in china.

my fave comp in recent days was the *Ikon Records Story* 2-disc set. treasure trove of completely forgotten/rare/never heard teen sacramento beat/garage/spy beat/surf/frat stuff. on Frantic Records. don't know how hard it is to find now. there was a vinyl version too with less stuff on it. tons of stuff on it that was basically just demos that high school bands made to give away at shows. the whole story of the Ikon studio is fascinating as well.

see, now that comp looks like something that someone made on their computer in an hour, but, like i said, it doesn't really matter! there is lots of good stuff on it (and heavily comped stuff) and that's what matters.

big hits of mid-america soma records one is pretty ace.

also i'd say, get only the compilation of the bands that issued only singles, which was more often in the 60's. (like nuggets, i think?!), and get the full albums of the one's who cut a full one.
now, digging the outstanding out of the standard stuff HERE, is a much more difficult task, but recommendations for that on another thread i guess

thanks for the recom's guys. i am trying to cut through all the choices and go for things that seems to have almost all great tracks on them, i know there's worthwhile stuff on everything though.

Back From The Grave is pretty much essential - very few clunkers, if any. For full on Freakbeat, Chocolate Soup For Diabetics and Perfumed Garden are hard to beat, 2 & 1 respectively being faves, though if you've got the second Nuggets box it skims most of the gems from these.

Electric Sugarcube Flashbacks is extremely essential also, although there's some overlap between it and Nuggets II.

Of the label comps, "Oh Yeah! The Dunwich Records Story" is the one to get first.

Prime Mover by the Leather Nun being on it is a bit o_O. LOVE LOVE LOVE the song but I wouldn't call it garage by any stretch of the imagination.

"Nuggets II" is really, really satisfying today.

I just acquired the original 3 Nuggets CDs and the 12 volume LP set, gonna pull off all the unique tracks not in the boxes and see how they all sound together.

Grapefruit seem to be specialising in doing compilations of great stuff from the era. & slightly later. I think I see this flowing into the early 70s hard rock scene which may have been a lot of teh same players a couple of years down the oine. So thinking a bit more in terms of continuum and finding purism a little out of place. Think the whole process of creating garage is anti purist almost inherently. Does seem to be players putting energy over technique to great degree and removing some degree of the reference points that the original UK blues purists etc were still incorporating.
Not sure how much of a distorted image one gets from seeing the 60s garage scene through the lens of teh 80s revival. Think everything was in a continual state of flux and one is getting a level of feedback to what teens were hearing from their influences. Which would probably be a bit different a couple of months further on from when recordings were done.

Anyway, do enjoy a bit of garage still. & the fashion has been one influence on me. along with that from various other eras.

I would also look into Freakbeat if its still called taht. Which at the time it was appearing under that name struck me as a UK equivalent of teh US garage rock but both were named years after the fact. I think it has been used as a term to incorporate some scenes from mainland Europe too, notably from the Netherlands and Germany. The Dutch scene seemed to pick up heavily on Pretty Things influences in a good way. Not sure if tehy were picking up much on the jazz influences I hear in mid 60s Pretty Things though. Hard hitting wild long haired stuff though.

I also like teh way taht garage like influences turn up in the rockier sides of what appears in the Ethiopiques series and later Zam Rock stuff. The Peace really sound like teh guitarist is chanelling early Jorma Kaukonen.
The early Turkish scene incorporated that mid 60s sound alongside more traditional indigenous stuff. The Turkish Delights set is pretty cool as is the volume from the Love, Peace and Poetry volume.

Japan's mid 60s Group Sounds are a pretty close garage equivalent too, Worth checking out The Mops among others.
